b. Real and virtual maps are in general use. Write two (02) characteristics of a
“virtual map”. (04 Marks)
c. Primary and secondary are two types of data collection methods in mapping. What
is meant by “primary data”? (04 Marks)
d. Background information is essential in thematic mapping. Give reasons. (04 Marks)
e. Topographic maps are produced in several scales in Sri Lanka. Name two (02) of
them. (04 Marks)

2 a. What is the reason to use “projections” in mapping? (05 Marks)


b. What are the “great and small circles” on a sphere? Explain them briefly with a
diagram. (05 Marks)
c. Define the “latitude and longitude” on a sphere. (05 Marks)
d. Maps can be classified into three categories by scale. Describe those, giving one
example each. (05 Marks)
e. In mapping, the “visual variables” are used in symbol designing. List five of

f. What is the purpose of preparing a “map layout” in mapping? (05 Marks)
