SUB: YOUR APPLICATION FOR A LOAN OF TK 75,000

Dear Sir,

It is our pleasure to find you as one of our very old and valued clients. We hope, you will
continue enjoying our personalized services as to your banking needs.

You have applied for a loan of Taka 75,000 to buy one motorcycle under our ‘Consumer Credit
Scheme’, which is a very popular collateral-free loan program.

One borrower, under this program, has to submit to us a number of undated cheques of his bank
account written in favor of our bank in advance and duly signed, which we are supposed to use
for settlement of the loan, if the borrower ever fails to adjust his or her debts.

Salaried people whose monthly salaries are commensurate with monthly repayment installments
of the proposed loan are eligible to avail of this loan facility.

As we have found out, your present monthly basic salary is Taka 16,000 and your take-home pay
(after adjustments of cuts by your employer) is Taka 9,000. In no circumstances we can ask you
to pay more than TK 3,600 as loan installment. Because, at least Taka 5,400 (one-third of your
basic pay) must be at your hand to defray your own personal financial needs.

If you avail of Taka 75,000 to be adjusted in five years, your monthly installment for adjustment
of the loan will be around Taka 6,700, which does not cover by what you are now drawing as
your take-home pay. We are extremely sorry to regret your loan application.

SUB: SUPPLEMENTARY BUDGET FOR PURCHASE OF FURNITUR

Dear Sir,

You would be happy to learn that our Branch made a net profit of Taka 14 crore in the last year
ending December 31, 2008. We are the leading bank branch in and around Shantinagar and
Mogbazar areas and the number of our clients and customers is increasing at exponential rate. On
an average, 200 customers visit our branch every day.

We are facing acute shortage of furniture to cater to our needs both for our clients and our back
office personnel. There has not been any addition of furniture in our branch since its inception in
the year 1998.

Now that OTOBI, a reputed furniture manufacturer in our country, has offered 15 percent
discount on office furniture we request to your esteemed authority to allot in favor of our branch
a supplementary budget of Taka 3 lac on account of furniture so that we can furnish our branch
with adequate furniture befitting our corporate environment.

Thank you so much, sir.

Sincerely,

Dear Maroof,

Hope, this letter will find you hale and hearty. How are you doing with your new assignment in
the foreign exchange department of your bank branch in Agrabad?

I would advise you to appear in IBB examination to be held in next November. Initially, I had
thought the exam would be a tough one. But, believe me; the exam was easy and smooth. I
appeared in all the papers of IBB exam Part-I that has just been held.

Among all the subjects I found Accountancy a bit difficult. But I sensed a great relief as I could
solve the question on ‘final account’ with some typical adjustments. I am pretty sure I would
qualify in all the subjects.

To pass the IBB exam what you have to do is read thoroughly all the question papers of the
previous IBB examinations and find out their appropriate answers from notebooks that are
available in the market. You may also attend the tutorial classes on all the subjects that are
especially arranged by IBB authority in Dhaka.

Keep in touch me and convey my best regards to your parents.

Sincerely,
Raakeeb Reza Khan

SUB: OPENING OF F.C. ACCOUNTS IN AMBARKHANA BRANCH

Dear Sir,
As you know, our branch has already achieved all its business targets of the current year seven
months ahead of the annual closing due on 31 December 2009.

You would be excited to learn that when in the beginning of this year the number of savings accounts
was 1,900 and that of current accounts only 56 our branch can now pride over its present number of
accounts, which is 4,500 savings accounts and 1,200 current accounts. Our total deposit as on April
30 stands at Taka 60 crore while our total advance stands at Taka 22 crore.

As everybody knows, Sylhet is famous as the richest abode in Bangladesh for expatriates working
abroad. All the branches of all the commercial banks in the entire Sylhet Division are dependent on
Sylheti wage earners for building their deposit bases. Those bank branches, which offer the
privileges to expatriates to open their F.C. accounts, are gaining the best fruits in their deposit
hunting.

We would be immensely benefited if your esteemed authority could arrange permission from the
central bank for authorizing our branch at least to open F.C. accounts of Bangladeshi expatriates as a
special consideration, if at this moment our branch is not given A.D. license to operate other foreign
exchange businesses.

Thank you so much.

SUB: RESCEDULING OF OUR LOAN REPAYMENT INSTALLMENTS

Dear Sir,

We are grateful to your esteemed bank authority for sanctioning a term loan of Taka 25 lac in favor
of our firm “Bright Poultry” in 2008. As you will find in your records we paid our loan installments
regularly for the last 15 months.

As ill luck would have it, on the ground of epidemic ‘bird flu’ we were compelled by the concerned
authority to cull our 3,700 chickens and the government has not yet given any compensation on that
account.

In such circumstances it is not possible for us to repay the quarterly installments regularly. The due
date of the next installment of Taka 3,75,000 is June 16, 2009. We would be highly obliged if your
authority could grant rescheduling the term loan to our firm to be adjusted in nine years instead of in
five years so that our quarterly installment stands at not more than Taka 2,00,000.

Thank you so much.

SUB: INTRODUCING COMPUTER SYSTEM IN OUR BRANCH

Dear Sir,

With due respect to your esteemed authority we like to inform you that our Srinagar Branch had
earned a net profit of only Taka 2 crore in the last year ending 31 December 2008 though the branch
has the potential to make much more profits. This branch is commercially a very important branch
for its strategic location.

Almost all the branches of all other commercial banks in Srinagar are doing better business compared
to ours and their employees leave their branches at 5 PM after balancing all books of accounts; after
office hours the bank employees of those banks visit different shops and trade houses to interact with
businessmen for deposit hunting and for recovery of overdue loans. On the other hand all the
employees of our Branch have to remain in the office everyday till 7 in the evening to complete their
daily works.

The secret behind the success stories of other banks is computerization. All the bank branches in
Srinagar, except our branch, are fully computerized. As a result the efficiency of those branches has
increased manifold.

We appeal to your esteemed authority to take necessary steps to introduce computerized banking
operation in our branch as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Of late, it is being observed that some of our branches have been sanctioning long-term loans for
house building a bit recklessly and without taking cautionary measures as to the builder’s equity and
the income generating capacity of the building being financed.

All concerned are hereby advised to strictly abide by the terms and conditions as stipulated in the
Circular Number 19 dated 12 Jan 1987 while evaluating a proposal of house-building loan.

Special attention must be given to the valuation of both landed and building properties keeping in
mind that in view of impending recession the present value of real estate in Bangladesh may
suddenly plummet as had happened in North America that has sparked the ongoing financial
meltdown all over the world.

Any deviation from instructions as enunciated in the “Loan Manual” and in circulars issued from
time to time as to house-building loan will be seriously taken and meted out with stern administrative
actions.

Each and every official is instructed to read this circular and put his or her signature in the blank

SUB: MONEY TRANSFER THROUGH MONEYGRAM SYSTEM

Dear Sir,

It is our pleasure to receive your letter enquiring about ‘money-gram’ system of paying money.

MoneyGram is an international company based in the United States having their offices in more than
170 countries all over the world. This company has recently started providing money transfer
services in Bangladesh. They provide a service that ensures instant cash from the remitters to the
recipients in the shortest possible time.

Our bank has entered into an agreement with MoneyGram International. So, if you have any friend or
relation working or living abroad, you may inform him/her that s/he can send money to anybody in
Bangladesh through our bank via MoneyGram.

On the strength of a unique ‘password’, conveyed by the remitter to the intending recipient, anybody
can get the instant cash over the counter even if the customer has no account with any bank.

You may enjoy this facility of MoneyGram in any shop or office, other than in banks, wherever you
will find the logo of MoneyGram, thanks to Internet facility being available in every nook and
corner.

Thanks for your query.

SUB: YOU’RE ENQUIRY ABOUT HOW YOU CAN GET MONEY FROM ABROAD

Dear Madam,

It is our pleasure to receive a letter from you to know how you can get money from abroad through
our bank instead of using the MoneyGram system of money transfer.

As you know, our bank has not yet entered into any agreement with MoneyGram. We are also not
confident about the efficacy of money transfer through MoneyGram that ensures payment to anybody
who can present a ‘password’. The system sounds to us a little alarming, as we are not used to
handing remittance money to anybody having no account with our bank.

Our system of remittance through our overseas correspondents is very robust and reliable; there is no
possibility of frauds in our system. We ensure crediting the beneficiaries’ accounts in the shortest
possible time. Thanks to SWIFT communication system of our bank, you can receive money from
abroad in matter of few minutes. What you can do is advise your friend or relation living abroad to
find out the nearest bank and instruct them to send his/her money through our correspondents.

We are enclosing herewith a brochure where you will find a list of our correspondent banks abroad
with their addresses, contact numbers, emails and SWIFT addresses. You may send this brochure to
your friend who may send money to your end through our Bank.

Dear Kamal,

Time flies away. I can’t imagine that I have already spent three years working in the same branch of
Agrani Bank at Sadarghat. This explains my pleasure in my banking profession; otherwise passing
time would have been a painfully slow memory.

I find myself fortunate to work in Agrani Bank, Sadarghat Branch for a number of reasons. Firstly,
the branch is located so near my home at Patla Khan Lane that I don’t need a rickshaw to commute
between my office and home. I can take my lunch in the comfort of my house during the lunch break
of half an hour. Secondly, my colleagues, especially my Manager, are excellent people. Had I not
been in this bank I would have missed a great opportunity to meet rare people with rare hearts among
my office colleagues and the customers of my bank.

You know, Kamal, one day I didn’t turn up to my office as I was suffering from fever. To my sheer
surprise, I found the whole crowd of my colleagues and a few customers in the living room of my
home. They were concerned about my sickness. They brought fruits and flowers. They wished me an
early recovery.

Of course, banking as a profession is a little risky. One has to be alert and cautious when money goes
out of the branch. I have been trained in our ‘foundation course’ that a good banker must have a
lion’s heart, an eagle’s eyes, a deer’s ears, a monkey’s canny intelligence and an angel’s noble soul.

I have decided to accept banking as my career for my whole life. Let’s see whether I as a banker can
contribute my mites and efforts for the welfare of people.

Please keep in touch with me and feel free to ask me for anything I can offer to you.

Dear Sir,

It is our privilege and pride to get your letter enquiring about the popular Education Loan Program
our bank has launched last month. The program is especially tailored to cater to the needs of
meritorious students who cannot afford high costs of educational expenses abroad.

You can avail of the loan if you have the following papers ready to submit to us:

01. All the certificates of your previous educations testifying that you are an extraordinarily
meritorious student.
02. Evidence that your parents or guardians have valuable properties though they don’t have ready
cash to spend.
03. Evidence that you have been qualified to get admission in any foreign university or college of
international reputation and that the education you would earn in that institution would be of
immense benefit to our country.
04. As the loan is offered at very low interest rate of only 4 percent, we may regret a loan application
if the applicant is not so meritorious or if his/her parents are affluent enough to spend cash for their
children’s education abroad.

We are always at your service and it would be our pride if students like you can earn knowledge on
the strength of a loan given by our Bank, the only state-owned Bank that always rushes to the needy
and the poor.

SUB: SEEKING LEGAL ADVICE REGARDING A LOAN DEFAULTER

Dear Sir,

Chittagong Diary Products Ltd. is a valued party of our branch. They have been banking with
us for the last 12 years.

But, of late, the party is not responding to our repeated requests to pay their installments of a
long-term loan. They have already failed to pay three installments and the loan has already
been classified.

According to our normal banking practice it is high time we instituted a case against them in
the “Ortho Rin Adalat”. But, we are afraid; they will stop banking with us if we file a suit
against them.

Can we take any legal measure that may motivate them to adjust the long-due loan? We have
sent them our reminders through letters. But, no legal notice has yet been served to them.

Awaiting your early response.

Feasibility on Rahim Glass seeking working capital of Taka one crore

Rahim Glass is the oldest factory in Chittagong manufacturing different kinds of glasses for the last
34 years. They have been maintaining a current account with us for the last three years though their
main bank is Sonali Bank wherefrom they had availed of a project loan of Taka 25 crore about five
years back.

Their project loan with Sonali Bank is going to be adjusted within this year. For our good
relationship with Rahim Glass they have sought Taka One crore as working capital for a new factory
they have recently set up to manufacture bottles for pharmaceutical companies.

The yearly turnover of the group of their industries is more than Taka 200 crore and they have never
defaulted with any bank. Besides machinery, which would be hypothecated by us, they would offer
additional collateral security worth Taka 5 crore to cover the loan for their proposed working capital.

Considering their business background and reputation, the undersigned highly recommends for
sanctioning Taka one crore for Rahim Glass as short-term renewable working capita loan in the form
of Cash Credit.

For his kind approval, please.

Solution to the problem of excess liquidity

Almost all the branches of Islami Bank in Chittagong as well as in other parts of Bangladesh, as you
know, have been facing excess liquidity as devout Muslims are crowding our bank branches to
deposit their savings knowing full well that they would not earn any interest on their deposits.

This trend of flooding our bank with deposits is observed especially during three months before Hajj
as the devout Muslims, who make up their minds to perform Hajj, withdraw their savings from other
commercial banks and deposit the same with us just before they set out their journey for Hajj.

Considering this trend we suggest our esteemed management to invest the excess fund with leasing
companies for a short period of three months. We have come to learn that the leasing companies
offer the best rate. During Hajj period the leasing companies finance the leather processing factories
also for a short period on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha.

CAR LOAN FOR SENIOR OFFICIALS

Social Investment Bank Ltd (SIBL) has at present 87 sedans, 25 jeeps and 12 pickups which are
being officially used all over Bangladesh. Of these vehicles, 50 sedans are allotted to executives,
from Assistant Vice Presidents to Managing Director, for their all time use. Each executive has to
pay Taka 300 every month against this facility of using the bank’s motor vehicles both for their
office and home uses.

The bank has to defray an annual expense of Taka 6 lac for one sedan allotted to each of the
executives on account of fuel, driver’s salaries, maintenance, depreciation cost and insurance
premium.

It has been observed that families of the executives can’t spare their allotted sedans for any official
use of the bank, as they have to use the cars for their domestic purposes day and night.

Considering exorbitant maintenance cost of sedans and also with a view to providing an incentive to
the bank officials all other private banks and some of the state-owned banks have already introduced
car loans to their executives at bank rate and in some cases at ‘no interest’ in addition to a monthly
allowance for maintenance of cars.

If the board of directors decides to give car loans of Taka 15 lac each to all the executives at an
interest rate of 2% along with monthly car allowance of Taka 25 thousand the bank will save 40%
expenditure on account of maintenance of sedans now being allotted to the executives.

If approved, the proposition may be placed at the next meeting of the Board of Directors for their
consideration.

SUB: ENHANCED DISBURSEMENT OF SMALL LOANS FOR FLOOD-AFFECTED

FARMERS

Dear Sir,

As you know, a SIDR cyclone, more severe than the SIDR of 2007, lashed the entire southern part of
Bagerhat district on May 15, 2009 leaving a trail of unimaginable destructions. Crops on the fields
have been damaged to the extent of 75 percent. Houses have been traceless. People are spending their
days and nights under the open sky. Considering the severity of the cyclone and haplessness of the
affected people we appeal to your esteemed authority to approach our Board of Directors with a
request to visit the flood-affected regions of Bagerhat district as soon as possible.

We need to convince our bank management to allot special budget of at least Taka 50 crore for
immediate disbursement of small loans, each of Taka 25 thousand, under a special program with a
view to rehabilitating the cyclone-affected people of this region.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

QUARTERLY EVALUATION MEETING HELD IN HEAD OFFICE ON MAY 22, 2009 TO
DISCUSS ON THE TOTAL POSITION OF THE BANK IN THE LAST FINANCIAL YEAR AND
STRATEGIES ADOPTED TO ACHIEVE BUSINESS GOALS IN THE CURRENT FINANCIAL
YEAR.

An evaluation meeting presided over by the bank’s Managing Director Mr. Abu Yusuf was held in
the Board Room of our Head Office on May 20, 2009 with Mr. Abdul Jalil, Chairman, Board of
Directors, attending the meeting as the chief guest. All the executives of the Head Office and all the
regional managers of the bank participated in the meeting that lasted for three hours from 1000 HRS
in the morning till 1300 HRS in the afternoon. The meeting was followed by a lunch in Hotel
Purbani.

In his welcome address Mr. Zainal Abedin, General Manager, Bangladesh Karma Sangsthan Bank
(BKSB), presented the overall position of the bank highlighting the following features of the last
financial year:

01. All the 45 branches located in different parts of Bangladesh made profits in the financial year
ending June 30, 2008.
02. Against annual profit target of Taka 15 crore the bank could make a total net profit of only Taka
3 crore.
03. The bank had a total deposit of Taka 1,000 crore out of which Taka 800 crore was ‘time deposit’
and the rest ‘demand deposit’.
04. The bank had a total advance of Taka 2,900 crore of which only Taka 300 crore was performing
assets and the rest non-performing.
05. Out of total number of 350 employees of the bank 130 employees have left their jobs and 26
employees had retired resulting in an acute shortage of manpower.
06. The bank is struggling to invest money as it has been facing tough competition from NGOs,
specially from Grameen Bank which is aggressively alluring rural people to bank with them in spite
of the fact that their rates of interests on loans are three times more than what BKSB offers.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors in his address as the chief guest expressed his deep concerns
at the pitiable condition of the bank and urged the bank management to take immediate measures to
identify the flaws and take remedial measures to correct anomalies, if any, that are responsible.

The Managing Director in his presidential address gave assurance that the bank will surmount all the
problems and will be able to achieve its annual target of making a total profit of Taka 25 crore in the
current financial year ending 30 June 2009 as BKSB has already taken the following steps:
01. The bank has already ensured a healthy deposit-loan ratio at 60-40 and the provisional profit at
the end of April 30, 2009 stood at Taka 20 crore.
02. Performing assets of BKSB now stands at 90 percent.
03. 20 branches have been computerized to solve the shortage of manpower.
The meeting was over by a vote of thanks delivered by the undersigned.

MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2009 AT PRIME BANK, ISLAMPUR

BRANCH, DHAKA, TO DISCUSS ABOUT SECURITY OF THE BRANCH.

An emergency meeting was held at 5 PM on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the chamber of the Branch
Manager to discuss about the existing security arrangements and the measures that can be taken to
streamline the security aspects of the Branch in view of recent robberies being committed in different
shops and offices in and around Dhaka city.

Presided over by the Branch Manager the meeting was attended by all the employees of the Branch.
Mr. Kamrul Islam, Sub-inspector of Islampur Police Station, attended the meeting as a special guest.

The meeting reviewed the law and order situation in Islampur area and security arrangements of the
Branch. There are only two security guards employed by a private security firm. The guards are not
smart and intelligent as was reported by the second officer of the Branch; it was also reported that on
holiday’s only one security guard remains inside the branch on mutual arrangements between the
guards so that the other guard can visit his family on holidays. More alarming was the fact that the
guards who are supposed to remain alert round the clock sleep during night.

The following resolutions were unanimously adopted by the meeting:

01. The guards have to be replaced by four smart and honest security guards who will guard the
Branch on alternative roaster so that at least two guards are always found guarding the Branch
premises round the clock.
02. The guard on duty must toll a strong copper bell every hour according to clock so that the officers
of the branch who reside near the Branch can hear the bell tolling.
03. A CCTV camera attached with a standby computer that can run on battery for at least one hour,
in case of power failure, have to be installed to record movement of people inside the Branch round
the clock. All files in the hard disk of the computer will have to be kept saved at least for one month
before erasing the memory disks.
04. Movement register has to be introduced to track movements of both clients and personnel.

The meeting that lasted for about one and a half hour was over with a vote of thanks delivered by the
undersigned.

especially crop loans, have to recovered and rescheduled. Head Office management has repeatedly
instructed our field offices to watch whether the small loans are being serviced properly or not.

But, statistics emanating from field offices transpire that agricultural loans are getting time-barred at
an alarming rate and the managers of rural branches are not at all careful about timely servicing of
the loans and proper notices are not being served to defaulting agricultural borrowers.

Our field offices, especially managers of our rural branches, are hereby advised to enlist the updated
lists of defaulters and send final notices to the concerned borrowers for repaying their over-due loans
by 07 June 2009. Field offices are advised to institute certificate cases against the defaulters after

If any branch is found having more than 10 percent of non-performing agricultural loans stern

Dear Sir:

You are our valued customer for a long time. Your transactions with us suggest that you have a good
reputation in supplying hardware to a huge number of your clients. We are proud to find you as one of our
prestigious account holders.

We have received an application dated May 02, 2009 from your esteemed firm seeking a cash credit loan
for Taka one million. You have also proposed to offer enough additional collateral securities to cover the
loan.

We wish we could offer you the loan as immediately as possible.

But, during our recent inspection at your shop and the adjacent factory we found that your factory
is not at all secure as regards the following:

01. The factory building is extremely old. The building, we are afraid, may collapse in case
an earthquake hits Dhaka city
02. There is no boundary wall on the premises
03. The door and the windows of the warehouse are too old and rickety

We take pain to say that our management won’t be able to approve a cash credit for your firm if you don’t
improve the security problems mentioned above.

Dear Mashuk,

Hope this letter will find you happy and hearty. As you know, I already have under my belt three ears of
banking experience in Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB). I know which products and services offered by a bank
are good or bad.

In your last letter you wanted to know whether it is possible on your part to avail of any loan from my bank to
do any business. Well, you should decide first what kind of business you are planning to do and then you can
choose which loan befits your need.

However, here below, I am furnishing a list of our loan products along with a brief description on the terms
and conditions. Go through the list minutely.

BKB finances the following 8 (eight) priority sectors, namely:

01. Crop
02. Fisheries
03. Live Stock
04. Farm and Irrigation Equipment
05. Agro-based Industrial Project
06. S.M.E
07. Continuous Loan (Working Capital and Cash Credit)
08. Micro Credit (Small Loan)

We also offer commercial and consumer loans. But, I will suggest you to take any of our agricultural loans,
which bear lesser interest than any loan offered by any other bank. You must open an account with any branch
of BKB near your proposed project.

If you like to know the details of terms and conditions of any of the above loans you have to visit any of our
bank branches and discuss with the Manager or the Advance Officer. Broadly speaking, you must have
property to offer as collateral securities to cover the loan you would be seeking.

Among the loans, I think, the best would be a loan for SME. SME stands for Small and Medium Enterprise.
Our bank has put emphasis on SME. In special cases you may avail of SME loan without even offering any
additional collateral security.

Should you need further clarifications don’t hesitate to come to my office. Eagerly awaiting your
next letter.

Sincerely,

Maswood Alam Khan

SUB: COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR CLEARING CHEQUES

Dear Sir,

We have come to learn that most of the banks all over the world no more take the trouble of carrying
cheques physically all the way to the ‘Clearing House’ for encashment through inter-bank
transactions. Thanks to banking automation, cheques may nowadays be  presented in the forms of
images to issuing banks through automated clearing system based on network connectivity among
banks through Internet.

It would be a world of good for our valued clients if such a system could be introduced in all the
bank branches under the ‘Clearing House’, so that we could offer instant cash to our clients who
would present on our counter cheques issued by clients belonging to a different bank.

To ensure automation in all the relevant sections your authority may please take necessary measures
to advise all the scheduled banks to automate at least their city branches, which operate under the
‘Clearing House’.

Thank you so much.

SUB: A MEDICAL BILL FOR A SICK EMPLOYEE

Dear Sir,

With due respect to our esteemed Board of Directors we like to inform you that Mr. Abdul Ahad is a
peon of our Branch who has been serving our bank for the last 22 years with full sincerity and
diligence. Ahad is not only a trustworthy employee of our branch; he is also very popular among our
valued clients for his amiable demeanor.

As ill luck would have it, Ahad had fallen sick about a month back. The doctor had diagnosed his
disease as ‘colon cancer’ and advised him to undergo immediate surgical operation. If he is operated
upon there is a good possibility that he would be completely cured.

A total amount of Taka Two lac would be required for his medical treatment. We have already
garnered about Taka One lac through individual donations.

If your authority approved of Taka One lac for this poor employee as a special case on humanitarian
grounds this man who has served our bank for such a long time may survive and again serve our
bank. He is too poor to manage money on his own.

Necessary medical certifications are attached herewith for your perusal.

Thank you, sir.

Sincerely,

Manager

My dear Shefali,

Hope, this letter will find you hale and hearty.

As you know, I have joined One Bank, Banani Branch, on May 02, 2009 as a Probationary Officer.
On the first day, I had to approach the Manager of the Branch with trepidation. As I introduced
myself and handed to him my ‘joining letter’ he greeted me so warmly that I felt greatly relieved.

The Second Officer of the Branch who also smilingly had received me introduced me to all the
officials of the branch. I was given no work or training on the first day.

The next day I was given some simple works like ‘filling out some forms’, ‘reading some important
circulars’, etc.

The branch is fully air-conditioned and nicely decorated. There are comfortable provisions inside our
office for having prayers and taking lunch for all the officials.

Though I was scared initially about my job in a bank now I feel home with all my colleagues who
always inspire me to work in a team spirit.

No more today. Awaiting your reply.

Sincerely,

Nasreen Zaman

SUB: ENQUIRY ABOUT RULES AND REGULATIONS OF HOUSE BUILDING LOAN

Dear Sir,

It is our pleasure to find you as one of our valued clients for a long time.

You have enquired to us to know about the detailed rules and regulations you have to follow if you
want to avail of a house-building loan of Taka 30 lac from our bank.

Broadly speaking, you must have a piece of land in Dhaka metropolitan city titled in your own name.
You may seek loan either for constructing a new building or for any extension of a building if there
is already a structure on the same land.

In case of a new building you have to invest your own money (your equity) for the foundation of the
proposed building. But, you don’t need to invest any money if you seek loan for any extension of the
existing building. The whole property must be unencumbered, that is, you have to make sure that the
property is not mortgaged to any bank or any financial organization. If we sanction a house-building
loan in your favor you have to mortgage the whole property with our bank. We will disburse loans in
installments on completion of different phases of constructions.

Enclosed herewith is a circular where you will find the detailed descriptions of the rules and
regulations for house-building loan.

Feel free to contact us if you need any clarifications in this respect. Thank you.

Manager

As a manager of your bank, draft a circular letter to all officers and employees to be punctual

In-house Circular No 19/discipline/09

Saturday, May 09, 2009

It is observed with great concern that not all employees of our branch are punctual in discharging
their duties.

There is a clear instruction that every employee must report to our branch at least 15 minutes before
9 in the morning so that any client seeking any service at 9 sharp is not Frustrated. The lunch break is
for 30 minutes and each prayer break is for 10 minutes. Nobody is supposed to leave office before
closing and balancing their books of accounts.

Some employees come to office even 30 minutes after 9; some spend more than 30 minutes for their
lunch and more than 10 minutes for saying their prayers.

If any employee is found violating the instructions as to punctuality in discharging their duties, stern
administrative actions will be taken against them.

We hope all colleagues will henceforth be punctual and sincere in discharging their duties with
diligence and in a team spirit.

Each and every employee must read this circular and acknowledge receipt by signing on the blank
space of this notification.

SUB: THANK YOU

Dear Sir,

It is our privilege and a huge pleasure to find you as a valued client of our bank for the last three
years.

The transactions in your savings account with us suggest that you are a good saver. Never
you issued any cheques to anybody, which had to be bounced due to lack of fund with your account.

We have also noted that you always enquire about welfare of each and every employee of
our branch.

We will never forget the kind gesture you have shown yesterday evening. Our cashier was sweating
in tension as he found shortfall in his cash balance and you suddenly appeared with a smile telling
him that you were overpaid Taka 500 by our cashier.

The nation is proud of people like you!

Dear Sir,

You would be unhappy to learn that Mr. Zainal Abedin, our cashier, had a hard time yesterday
afternoon. He had to borrow money from his relations to square up with a shortfall of cash because
he had paid someone over the counter an excess amount of Taka 10,000.

On thorough checking of each and every instrument of the day we have found out some
inconsistencies between the denominations mentioned on the overleaf of a bearer cheque and the
value of the cheque. The bearer cheque of your Current Account was for an amount of Taka 70,000.
We are afraid, our cashier perhaps unmindfully handed Taka 80,000 to the junior assistant of your
office who was the bearer of the cheque.

We have no right to embarrass you by this enquiry and our apprehension may be totally unfounded.
But, as the cash was handed to your office employee we have dared to approach you. Hope, you as
our most valued client would empathize with our situation and check with your office very
discreetly.

Please ignore this letter if you find out that no excess amount of cash was handed to your office
assistant.

Looking forward to taking a tea either at your gorgeous office or at our humble office.

Thank you so much.

05. Certificates on your company’s TIN and VAT from the Revenue Board
06. LCA form to be duly filled out and signed

SUB: WAIVER OF INTEREST ON ACCOUNT OF “SUN BREAD”

Dear Madam,
We are sorry to inform you that it is not possible on the part of our bank to waive interests accrued on
the project loan favoring “Sun Bread” on the following grounds:

01. The breads and biscuits of your brand are in high demand in the market.
02. There is no reason for us to believe that your industry has been really sick as we have gathered
intelligence that all the sale proceeds of the products of “Sun Bread” are regularly deposited with an
account your company has been maintaining with a different bank, a fact you have never disclosed to
us.
03. You have availed of a C.C. loan of Taka 10 lac from a different bank for your working capital
and your company has religiously been adjusting that loan without any fail; on the other hand, you
have defaulted two consecutive installments against the project loan you have availed from our bank.

You are hereby advised to pay in full the overdue installments within first week of June 2009;
otherwise, we would be compelled to foreclose your mortgaged properties.

Should you need to clarify your position, feel free to contact us through e-mails.

Any deviation from instructions as enunciated in the “Loan Manual” and in circulars issued from

actions.

Write a letter to your friend narrating your experiences of attending a seminar on ‘Credit
Risk Analysis’.

103 Dinanath Sen Road

Gandaria, Dhaka 1204
Thursday, May 21, 2009

Dear Kamal,
Last Saturday I had attended a seminar that has opened my eyes to a very vital task every banker, like
you and me, must learn. It was a seminar on ‘credit risk analysis’ organized by IBB and was held at
the auditorium of BIBM in Mirpur.

Many junior and senior bankers attended the seminar. I would not have attended the seminar if my
manager had not advised me to attend the seminar on his behalf as he had an appointment at the same
time when the seminar was held.

As you know, credit risk is the risk of loss due to non-payment of a loan. Banks employ their own
models to rank potential and existing customers according to risks, and then apply appropriate
strategies.

What we learned in the seminar is how to maintain credit risk exposure within acceptable parameters
by maximizing a bank’s risk-adjusted rate of return.

Bankers usually trade off the cost/benefits of a loan according to its risks and the interest charged.
Higher the risk, higher is the rate of interest. But interest rates are not the only method to compensate
for risk. Protective covenants are written into loan agreements that allow the banker some controls.

Since exposure to credit risk continues to be the leading source of problems in banks, banks and their
supervisors should be able to draw useful lessons from past experiences. Banks should have a keen
awareness of the need to identify measure, monitor and control credit risks as well as to determine
that they hold adequate capital against these risks.

If you are interested, I may send you by courier photocopies of a variety of documents and brochures
I was given in the seminar.

Thank you so much.

SUB: ENHANCEMENT OF MEDICAL FACILITIES

Dear Sir,
With due respect to your esteemed authority we like to inform you that our Brahmanbaria Branch
had earned a net profit of Taka 62 crore in the last year ending 31 December 2008.

This branch being a commercially very important branch all the employees have to remain in the
office everyday till 7 in the evening to complete their daily works. Some of the employees have to
come to office even on holidays to balance some books of accounts.

Twelve male employees and seven female employees are employed in this branch. Some of the
employees are elderly people in their late 40s.

As you know, there is only one medical practitioner who has been appointed by our bank. Sick
employees or their dependents have to travel about one mile to visit the medical practitioner in his
chamber.

It would be a world of good to all our employees if your authority could employ one male and one
female medical practitioner at a little higher salary so that the practitioner could visit our branch
every alternate day in the afternoon. Such welfare arrangement, if granted, will immensely benefit
our employees and will contribute to better delivery of works from our employees.

Thank you so much.

SUB: SEEKING LEGAL ADVICE REGARDING A LOAN DEFAULTER

Dear Sir,

Chittagong Diary Products Ltd. is a valued party of our branch. They have been banking with us
for the last 12 years.

But, of late, the party is not responding to our repeated requests to pay their installments of a
long-term loan. They have already failed to pay three installments and the loan has already been
classified.

According to our normal banking practice it is high time we instituted a case against them in the
“Ortho Rin Adalat”. But, we are afraid, they will stop banking with us if we file a suit against
them.

Can we take any legal measure that may motivate them to adjust the long-due loan? We have
sent them our reminders through letters. But, no legal notice has yet been served to them.

Awaiting your early response.

Dear Sir,

Re: Dishonour of Cheque No. 2133678

We have received your letter dated 14th May. We sincerely apologies for the wrongful dishonour
of the cheque No. 2133678 for the Tk. 5000.00 and the inconvenience caused to you thereby.

If you look into the counterfoils of your cheque book, you will notice that you had issued a post-
dated bearer cheque for Tk. 2500.00 in the name of Mr. Ghulam Mustafa before issuing cheque
No. 2133678. It was dated 15th, May but was presented at the counter and paid by over-sight, on
12th May, reducing the balance in your account to Tk. 4000.00. Hence when the cheque for Tk.
5000 was presented to the Bank on 13th May, it was returned with the reason ‘insufficient funds’
marked on it. We realize that such a mistake should not have been committed.  The staff member
responsible for it has been cautioned and we assure you that such a mistake will not recur in
future. We notice that some cheques deposited by you having seen cleared in the meanwhile;
there is sufficient balance in your account to cover TK. 5000.00. You may request Mr. Ghulm
Mustafa to present the cheque again to us.

We highly esteem your association with the Bank and assure you of our co-operation at all times.

Yours faithfully,
