REPORTER: Thank you Elon for joining us tonight. Elon, please tell us about
your family background.

ELON: Sure. I was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on the 28th of June 1971.
Pretoria, the city I was from, was nicknamed Jacaranda City, because of the
many Jacaranda trees in the city I also grew up with two siblings, my brother
Kimbal and my sister Tosca. When I was a child, I used to love pulling pranks on
others.

REPORTER: Pretoria sounds like a lovely place, but were you educated in
Pretoria? If not, where were you educated?

ELON: I graduated from high school at Pretoria boys’ high school, straight after
I went to Canada and attended Queen’s University. Later, I moved to the
University of Pennsylvania to earn a bachelor’s degree in physics and
economics. Soon after, I attended Stanford University, before becoming an
entrepreneur.

REPORTER: Wow, Elon, they are all very prestigious Universities, but why did
you first want to become an entrepreneur?

ELON: As a kid, I wanted to be effective in the world so when I saw my

opportunity with the university scholarships, I knew I should take the
opportunity.

REPORTER: Interesting. Well, obviously with Tesla blowing the electric car
market out of the water, but how did you first get involved in making electric
cars?

ELON: Firstly, I used to have a tZero electric car which got me thinking that I
wanted to create a sustainable car company that would get more awareness
for people to buy electric cars so there would be less pollution from the fossil
fuel industry.

REPORTER: Thank you Elon, but what about SpaceX? How did you get the idea
of making a space tourism company?
ELON: I read lots of books and studied about what physics it would take a
rocket to get to space. I also had a bachelor’s degree in economics, so I wanted
to have a successful company in space technology that could explore more
places in space, have the option for people to have the once-in-a-lifetime
experience to go to space, also to get men to Mars and if the earth became
unhabitable, civilization could colonise Mars.

REPORTER: Well, SpaceX has changed space tourism immensely. Founding

Tesla, buying Twitter, founding SpaceX and co-founding PayPal. How important
do you see yourself and your businesses in the economy?

Elon: Well, I have lots of successful businesses that all contribute to the
economy, so I think on behalf of my business I contribute to the global
economy a fair bit, especially Tesla because Teslas are made here in the USA,
and they are exported to other countries which brings money into the USA’s
economy, Also, PayPal contributes to the economy by allowing people to buy
items online, and PayPal makes on average 4.2 billion dollars per year, but
SpaceX and Twitter combined makes 8 billion US dollars per year.

REPORTER: Wow Elon, those numbers are staggering but tell me how do you
become so successful are there any specific behaviours an entrepreneur must
follow to become successful?

ELON: Well actually there is.

REPORTER: Could you please explain them?

ELON: Well, first, an entrepreneur must show initiative. Initiative is the skill of
acting before others to be ahead of other competitors’ products. For example,
when there wasn’t a big market for electric cars. When I saw the opportunity
to dominate the market, I took my chance.
Another skill an entrepreneur must have to be successful is networking.
Networking is the skill of getting inspired by other people and having
relationships in case your business is failing. For example, I was collaborating
with a man called Peter Theil and we invented this company called X.com,
which eventually merged into PayPal, and now we can rely on each other for
our own business.
The third and final skill an entrepreneur must be problem-solving. Problem-
solving is the skill of being able to solve problems from bankruptcy to what
items the public wants. For example, Tesla needed funding to make new
electric cars in the early 2000s not many people thought using electric cars
wouldn’t be a good option.

REPORTER: That makes sense now. Well, that is all we have time for tonight, it
has been a pleasure having you on the show.

ELON: Thank you for having me on the show.

REPORTER: Thank you for watching viewers but it is time to go. Goodbye
