Maxillary artery (three parts in relation to

Lateral Pterygoid muscle)

1st and 2nd parts are content of the infratemporal fossa
3rd part is content of the pterygopalatine fossa
Maxillary artery enters the infratemporal fossa deep to the neck of the mandible
It leaves the infratemporal fossa through Pterygomaxillary fissure to enter the
pterygopalatine fossa
Maxillary A. leaves the pterygopalatine fossa as a branch (or a direct continuation)
through the sphenopalatine foramen to enter the nasal cavity

In the infratemporal fossa the maxillary artery (1st and 2nd parts) gives
the following branches (important branches)
1- Inferior alveolar A. to enter the mandible through mandibular foramen
2- Middle meningeal A. to enter the cranial cavity through foramen spinosum
3- Accessory middle meningeal A. to enter the cranial cavity through the
foramen Ovale (MALE)
4- Muscular branches to the muscles of mastication
5- Buccal A. branch to buccal mucosa and buccinator muscle

In the pterygopalatine fossa (3rd part) gives the following branches

(important branches)
1- Infraorbital A – to orbit – through inferior orbital fissure
2- Nasal branch (sphenopalatine A.) (direct continuation) – to nasal cavity –
through sphenopalatine foramen
3- Palatine artery (greater and lesser) to oral cavity – through palatine
foramen (canal)
4- Posterior superior alveolar A. to enter the maxilla (upper molar teeth)
5- Pharyngeal branch (to pharynx) and pterygoid canal branches (to cranial
fossa)
Mandibular nerve enters the infratemporal
fossa through foramen ovale (MALE)
It gives the following branches (important branches)
1- Buccal nerve leaves between the two head lateral pterygoid to the buccal
mucosa through buccinator muscle
2- The auriculotemporal nerve leaves fossa deep to neck of mandible
3- Lingual N. leaves the fossa to oral cavity (accompanied by chorda tympani)
4- Inferior alveolar nerve leaves fossa through mandibular foramen
Note: lesser petrosal nerve enters the fossa through foramen Ovale (MA LE) to
Otic ganglion

Maxillary nerve enters the pterygopalatine

fossa through foramen rotundum
It gives the following branches in the pterygopalatine fossa (important
branches)
1- Infraorbital nerve (continuation) and zygomatic branches leave the fossa
through inferior orbital fissure to the orbit
2- Palatine nerve (greater and lesser) leaves the fossa through the palatine
foramen (canal) to enter the oral cavity
3- Pharyngeal branch to pharynx through palatovaginal foramen
4- Nasal branches to nasal cavity through sphenopalatine foramen
5- Post. sup. Alveolar N. to maxilla (upper molar teeth)

Note: nerve of pterygoid canal (Vidian nerve) enters the fossa through pterygoid
canal to Pterygopalatine ganglion
