5D. Reading
I. Read the text, and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false).
Examples of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be everywhere, and it has great impacts on our daily lives. Not
long ago, only satellite-based GPS was available, now artificial intelligence can help users much more
experience. It can recommend the route that avoids roadblocks or congestion.
Using virtual filters on our faces when taking pictures and using face ID for unlocking our phones are
two more examples of artificial intelligence that are now part of our daily lives.
AI can identify incorrect usage of language and suggest corrections in word processors or texting apps.
The apps with high-quality language data can help you use grammar correctly, catch your mistakes and
offer correction.
Interacting between customers and customer service can be time-consuming and stressful. One
increasingly popular solution to this is the use of AI chatbots. Advanced chatbots no longer require
specific formats of inputs, for example yes-no questions. Chatbots are taught to answer complex
questions requiring detailed responses.
1. Artificial intelligence which is used in transportation is the same as GPS. __________
2. AI may help drivers avoid traffic jams. __________
3. With AI, any human face can be identified and recognized. __________
4. Texting apps can identify grammar mistakes, but they can’t give correction. __________
5. The use of chatbots helps make the relationship between companies and customers better and more
convenient. __________
6. Chatbots can only give responses to yes-no questions. __________
II. Read the text, and do the tasks that follow.
How do Flat Screen Televisions work?
In the beginning
How have televisions changed over the years? Have you ever seen a very big flat
screen TV screen? It might seem like flat screen televisions are something new,
but actually they produced the very first flat screen television back in 1964. The
difference is that the first flat television screens could only produce two colours.
Nowadays high-definition screens are used, so this isn’t a problem.
What are they made of?
Flat television screens are made from two sheets of glass. Between the glass
there are neon and xenon gases. When you switch on the television, the
electricity mixes with the gases, and atoms release energy. The energy creates
the coloured lights which make the TV picture. They work like fluorescent tubes.
Why flat screen TVs?
People like flat screen televisions because they aren’t heavy and they don’t take
up much space. They are also popular because you can hang them on the wall.
On possible problem is that some flat TV screens are very bright, which means
they need more electricity.
Task 1. Match the phrases below to pictures a-d.
1. flat TV screen __________________
2. fluorescent tube __________________
3. neon and xenon gases __________________
4. atoms release energy __________________
Task 2. Read the text again, and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false).
1. Televisions have changed over the years. ___________
2. They developed the first flat screen TV in 1984. ___________
3. Today flat screen TVs only produce two colours. ___________
4. Flat screen TVs are made of two sheets of glass with gases between them. ___________
5. Today, flat screen TVs are heavy. ___________
III. Read the text, and do the tasks that follow.
Three inventions that might save your life
1. Most of us associate barcodes with supermarkets where cashiers scan the products we’re buying and
tell us the price. What is less well known is that bar codes are also used in many other places and for
other purposes. For instance, hospitals have started using them in patients’ wristbands. Whenever
patients are treated anywhere in the hospital, the wristband is scanned in order to show their medical
records. This way, the risk of any patient receiving the wrong medication or treatments is considerably
reduced.
2. Around 15 million babies are born prematurely throughout the world every year. Up to one-fifth die
and many others suffer serious health problems. Simply by keeping them warm, many deaths and
illnesses can be avoided. Whereas an incubator costs as much as $20,000 and needs electricity to work,
an American NGO called Embrace has developed a low cost infant warmer at a tiny fraction of this
price (1%). It can work with electricity or run off a generator, and heats up a miniature sleeping bag
made of a special material that maintains a constant temperature for up to 6 hours, thus keeping the
baby’s body temperature stable and raising their chances of survival.
3. Given the country’s experience with devastating earthquakes, it isn’t surprising that a company in
Japan has designed a quake-resistant bed that can shelter its occupants from up to 60 tonnes of falling
debris. The bed is made of very strong wood from 30- to 40- year-old trees that is reinforced with
metal, and it has an overhead canopy. Starting from $5,600, it isn’t exactly cheap. But taking into
account the amount of time people spend in bed, it may well save a lot of lives, as well as helping lots
of people sleep more peacefully. And surely that’s worth the money.
Task 1. Read the text, and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false). Correct the false ones.
1. Hospitals have increased the use of scanners in patients’ treatment.
2. Patients are given special bracelets with background information about their illness.
3. About five million premature babies die every year.

5. The bed protects people from things that might otherwise fall on them.
6. The bed could be a good investment for Japanese people.
Task 2. Find the numbers in the text, and explain who or what they refer to.

IV. Read the text about a small, wearable computer, and do the tasks that follow.
New Way To See The Future
Although wearable computing devices are not a completely new
idea, one in particular has been attracting plenty of media
attention. The Optical Head- Mounted Display (OHMD) is a
tiny, wearable computer attached to what looks like a normal
pair of frameless glasses. 1 ___________ .
Wearers can receive and reply to messages or phone calls, ask
the device to translate for them, get information about transport
and possible disruptions, ask for directions and be guided to the
place they want to go, take pictures and record videos along the
way - all without hardly ever having to take their hands out of their pockets. Enthusiasts who have
been testing this groundbreaking new technology claim that it enables them to obtain useful
information without interrupting their daily lives. 2 ___________ . On a more serious note, the
‘computer glasses’ could provide valuable assistance to disabled people or anybody with impaired
mobility.
As with all new technologies, there are detractions as well. Any device that allows its wearers to
photograph and record people without their consent, or without them being aware of it, raises
questions of intimacy and privacy.
3
___________ . Terrorists could employ the technology to explore the site of their next
attack, while criminals could use it to obtain plans of the next bank they are planning to rob.
Apart from these extreme cases, psychologists warn that there are reasons why we should be a little
wary of devices like these.
4
___________ . Think, for instance, of the ubiquitous MP3 and MP4 players: everywhere we go, there
are people plugged in to their players, oblivious of the world around them. Others have become so
addicted to their mobile phones that they cannot concentrate on face- to-face conversations without
simultaneous checking their messages.
As our wearable computer bombards us with all kinds of data in real time, our brain may experience
information overload, which can lead to stress and anxiety. 5 ___________ . Moreover, if we become
too reliant on always being updated about any situation, we run the risk of feeling insecure and out of
control the moment we cannot get this information.
For the moment, we needn’t worry too much. 6 ___________ . And when they do become available,
will people still be comfortable viewing the world in such a different way? Well, you could say that
remains to be seen.
Task 1. What is the main point the author makes about this technology?
A. It will revolutionize and improve our lives.
B. It’s intrusive and potentially dangerous.
C. It’ll be expensive and only for a small, exclusive minority.
D. It has great potential, but needs to be used with caution.
Task 2. Read the text again, and complete gaps 1-6 with sentences A-G. There is one extra
sentence you do not need to use.
A. Moreover, it gives rise to security concerns as well.
B. It will probably be some time before such devices become readily available to consumers at an
affordable price.
C. The advantages for consumers far outweigh the disadvantages.
D. New technologies that have been devised to enhance the way we experience reality, may end up
cutting us off from real life instead.
E. There are moments when we should just sit back and watch the clouds, without immediately
receiving the latest weather forecast.
F. They also love the fact that it captures great moments with family or friends that might otherwise
have remained unrecorded, for lack of a camera or mobile phone at hand.
G. The device can be controlled by pressing it, or using voice commands.
Task 3. Choose the correct answers.
1. The wearable computer responds to __________.
A. manual orders only
B. both manual and spoken orders
C. the wearer’s eye movement
2. Which of these is NOT said about the device?
A. It can help you deal with foreign languages.
B. It can take photographs of everything you see.
C. It can protect your eyes from bright light.
3. What do psychologists say about the use of technology?
A. Things that are supposed to improve our lives don’t always do so.
B. People waste a lot of time because they don’t know how to use them,
C. People lose concentration more easily these days.
4. What is meant by ‘information overload’?
A. The information people receive is not uploaded properly.
B. People receive too much unnecessary information.
C. People don’t always receive the latest information.
V. Read the text about three machines, and then answer the questions. There may be more than

How to Become an Inventor
Many people think that becoming an inventor is a simple process of three steps: having a bright idea,
researching the market for the idea, and then selling that idea to a large company. It’s not that simple,
however, and can often be a time-consuming, difficult process. So let’s take a look at what you need to
do to become an inventor.
Every invention starts with an idea. Brainstorm your ideas with colleagues, friends, and family. For
any idea they like, do research to check that your idea is original. Decide if you want to protect or
patent your idea from being copied. Think carefully about this, as you do not want to be an inventor
who says, “He wouldn’t have been able to steal my idea if I had patented it.”
So now you have the idea, what’s next? Once you settle on the idea for your invention, study the
market you want to sell it to. Get to know as much as you can about the customers who will buy your
product. Make sure it will be profitable.
Once you have identified that market for your invention, write a business plan, possibly create a
sample of your product, and then go out and try to sell it. This is a challenging stage because you could
meet with a lot of rejection. Keep going and don’t give up. Do not lose sight of your goal - seeing your
product used and enjoyed by millions.

Li-Fi Technology
Li-Fi technology is a new technology that transmits signals as light instead of radio waves. In
urban areas where Wi-Fi networks become congested and there is a lot of noise in the signals, this
technology is something that can be of immense use to an individual. The basic requirement of this
technology is the availability of light!
Light is also an electromagnetic wave like radio waves.
The only difference is that the former has the ability to
transmit data almost ten thousand times faster than the latter!
The basic process is quite simple to understand. An LED
light bulb, any one at all, can be flicked on and off in order to
be able to generate signals. A light sensor on a device picks
up the digital information sent by the LED, which enables it
to be processed by a computer.
The question is whether anyone wants to go through the
annoying experience of sitting under a flickering light bulb.
This is the interesting part. The technology is focusing on making sure that the light bulb is flickered
up to billions of times a second! At that rate, the human eye simply cannot notice the light bulb being
flicked on and off.
However, everything comes with a disadvantage. The major disadvantage here is the fact that
these signals cannot penetrate walls. So if you want to move from one room to another, you will need
to have a wired bulb present in that room as well!
An Estonian startup company called Velmenni took the technology out of the laboratories and
brought it into the real-world offices, and industrial environments in Tallinn for the first time.
Overall, this sounds like quite a development in the field of communication technology.

High school students from Southeast Asia protect the environment with inventions that challenge
the present situation. They presented their research at the Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair (ISEF).
The team from Thailand presented its research on using fish scales to create
plastic ware items such as bowls and plates, with no trace of fish odour in 2011.
The team also found out that the material completely breaks down in about 28
days when buried in soil, and does not harm creatures that live in the dirt. In
comparison, conventional plastic products release toxins during the
manufacturing process and during disposal.
The Vietnamese team proposed using solar energy and vacuum techniques to
power the desalination process in 2012. Conventional desalination methods are
expensive affairs as they tend to consume vast amounts of electricity and fuel. In
contrast, solar energy is an inexhaustible and renewable energy source.
The Indonesian team built a “Green Refrigerant Box” in 2014 that, instead of running on
electricity, used a hand-operated vacuum pump made from plastic soft drink bottles. The idea was
formed because the students’ hometown in rural South Sumatra frequently experiences power cuts,
constantly shutting down electrical appliances.
Bio-waste materials such as mangosteen skin can be used as a substance to dye cotton fabric,
together with onion skin extract. The project of Malaysian students in 2014 not only replaced the usage
of hazardous chemical dyes with bio-waste material, but also helped recycle bio-waste itself.

Young inventors with plans to change the world
Meet three inventors who have had useful ideas from a young age - you'll definitely hear from them
again!
When Remya Jose’s parents became ill, she needed to wash clothes in a nearby river in India.
However, the 14-year-old found that it took too much time, and it was very hard work after a long day
at school.
So Remya studied how a normal washing machine worked. Then she took some recycled bicycle parts
and used them to build her own machine, with the help of a local car repair store. Remya’s pedal-
powered washing machine is easy to use - you just sit on the bicycle seat, turn the pedals, and the wash
goes around. The invention saves a lot of time and helps people to stay fit, too. It’s very useful with
little or no electricity.
At the age of 15, Ann Makosinski from Canada had news from a good friend in the Philippines. Her
friend was having problems studying and doing her homework. She wasn’t doing well at school
because she didn’t have reliable electricity at home and there wasn’t enough light to study in the
evening.
Ann learned that this was a common problem for young people around the world. She wanted to help
her friend, so she invented a flashlight to help her.
The flashlight works from the heat of your hands when you hold it, so it doesn’t need expensive
batteries or electricity. The outside of the flashlight is made from ‘Peltier tiles’ - these turn heat into
energy. Ann bought these tiles on eBay and the flashlight only cost $26 to make.
As a young teenager Kelvin Doe began to teach himself engineering in his home city of Freetown in
Sierra Leone. There were often serious problems with the electricity supply, and this made daily life
difficult for his family and friends.
At 13, Kelvin started to invent and build special batteries. He made the batteries from acid, soda, and
recycled metal parts that he found in recycle bins. The energy from these produced electricity for the
homes in his community.
Kelvin continued with his interest in engineering. He later built a radio transmitter and started a radio
station for young people in his city.
Task 1. Choose the correct answers for each question.
1. The inventions are similar because they are all _______.
A. made from recycle rubbish
B. designed to produce light
C. useful in places without reliable electricity
D. helpful in towns with expensive electricity
2. The young people made their inventions because they all wanted to ________.
A. make a lot of money for their families B. find the answer to a problem or difficulty
C. become very famous in their country D. win an engineering prize at school

Task 2. Read the text again. Make short notes to complete the chart.

Like most people, we hate cleaning our oven. It’s a job that isn’t done very often and usually it’s only
when the oven is horrible and smelly. Anyway, guess what? We’ve just got a brand new, pyrolytic
oven and it’s amazing. When the oven is dirty or greasy, you switch on the pyrolytic function. The
oven door is locked, the temperature is raised to around 500°C and the food and grease is burned off.
A couple of hours later, at the end of the process, your oven is spotless. It’s like a magic.
Jane, Birmingham

There’s an induction hob in our new flat and it’s brilliant. There’s a magnetic coil under the surface
and when electricity travels through it, electromagnetic energy is created. This is transferred to the
base of the pan, which must be iron, and the contents of the pan are heated really fast. When you
remove the pan, you won’t bum yourself on the hob because the pan is hot, not the hob. So induction
hobs are really quick, safe and efficient. The only disadvantage is they’re more expensive to buy. ®
Jack, London

The Advantages of Using Wi-Fi on Your Smartphone
Wi-Fi is a method for devices such as smartphones to connect wirelessly to the Internet using
radio waves. Connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi requires a hotspot, but it is always faster than the
3G cellular networks which smartphones can also use to connect, and occasionally faster than 4G.
Using Wi-Fi when it is available can also prove to be cheaper and make your phone run more
efficiently in the long run than relying on cellular networks.
When you use a Wi-Fi network to access the Internet from your phone, the data usage does not
count against your bundled data. Mobile providers often allocate a certain amount of data for free each
month and charge you a fee for any data usage beyond this. By connecting via Wi-Fi wherever it is
available, you can save your bundled data for situations when you might not be close to any Wi-Fi
hotspots.
In many situations, your speed using a strong, dedicated Wi-Fi connection is faster than that of
using your mobile network. It is very noticeable when transferring larger files. If you need to
download large files or stream media to your smartphone in a hurry, it is much better to do so via Wi-
Fi.
Battery life is extremely important for smartphones because you will not be able to connect to the
Internet or use certain functions such as the camera flash if your battery is too low. Using Wi-Fi to
connect to the Internet drains less battery life than using a mobile network, especially in situations
where the cellular coverage fluctuates. Since Wi-Fi is generally faster than using mobile networks, you
will also not spend as much time transferring the data, which further decreases battery usage.
36. The following are the advantages of using Wi-Fi on your smartphone EXCEPT that _____.
A. it does not need a hotspot to connect all your mobile devices
B. it is faster than the 3G cellular networks
C. it is cheaper than using the 3G networks
D. it makes your phone run more efficiently in the long run
37. By using Wi-Fi, you _______.
A. can use all your bundled data for free
B. can use a certain amount of data for free each month
C. may stay under the data capacity allocated by mobile providers
D. save your bundled data for situations when you use a Wi-Fi network
38. A Wi-Fi connection offers _______.
A. better large files B. faster smartphones C. no need for hurry D. better speeds
39. Using Wi-Fi offers longer battery life because _______.
A. you will be able to connect to other devices when your battery is low
B. it requires less time with the same task than using mobile networks
C. the Internet harms the battery life so much
D. it requires so little energy while the cellular coverage fluctuates
