CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event that impacted almost every
aspect of our lives, from health and well-being to education. The global pandemic started
in March 2020, with the first cases reported in December 2019.[1] The virus hit the
country like a tornado, wiping millions of lives and affecting millions of people and their
families. It caused panic, fear, and uncertainty among students and their parents. Schools
in the Philippines have been closed for about two years as one of the restrictions that the
government imposed to control the virus’s spread and maintain public health. This forced
The students have been learning in an online mode since the beginning of
COVID-19. The curriculum has been modified to support this change in mode. There was
continuous debate about what will happen when stricken nations finally got out of
quarantine. [3] Will children and students, who were mostly home-schooled by their
parents during quarantine, be able to adjust to the more traditional classroom setting
when school’s reopen? How do teachers and schools have a plan in place to cope with the
anticipated stresses and problems that are expected of both teachers and students who
have been only accustomed to home-schooling for a period of two years? [4]

When schools reopened after the threat lowered, many students found that their
online courses were simply not as useful or engaging as they had expected. For some, this
may have been because of the lack of feedback or interaction in their online classes,
which made it difficult to learn new material on their own. For others, it was because they
felt like they had been pushed through an online curriculum with little time for reflection
and revision before being pushed out into the real world by a deadline. [3]
classes now that schools are reopened two years after the COVID-19 pandemic started
are varied. Some students find it difficult to adjust to the new environment, while others
simply do not have the time or resources necessary to learn how this new system works.
[5] Some students may be more comfortable with online courses, while others would
rather take a traditional class that allows them to interact with their classmates and
teachers. This will require them to put aside their usual habits and adapt their behavior
This study aims to determine the challenges encountered by Senior High School
students at Surigao City National High School, as well as the coping mechanisms they
used to deal with these challenges. This study is significant since it explores the impact of
the COVID-19 pandemic on the students. To gather data for this study, Senior High
School students will be given a questionnaires about what challenges they encountered

and how they cope with it from facing on alternative delivery mode to face-to-face mode
