The State of Qatar is a peninsula that extends north into the Persian Gulf, from the
east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The territory includes a series of islets, the most
important being Halul, Shraouh and Al-Asshat. The coastline stretches for 700 km. Ar
Rayyan is the third largest municipality in the state of Qatar. Its main settlement is
the city of the same name, which occupies the entire eastern section and largely
surrounds the Doha metropolitan area and functions as a suburb. The large tract of
mostly undeveloped land in the southwest also falls under the administration of the
municipality.

Like many other names given to Qatari settlements and municipalities, Al Rayyan
Municipality was named after a geographical feature present in its namesake, Al
Rayyan City. The city derives its name from the Arabic term "lightning", which
translates as "irrigation". This name was given to it because of its low elevation,
which enabled it to act as a floodplain and provide a sustained supply of water to
the many plants that grew within its boundaries.

HISTORY:

A bit of Qatari history

The territory of Qatar played a rather secondary role for much of the history of the
Middle East, being primarily a stopover for merchants of pearls, pigments, fabrics, and
other goods who sailed the Persian Gulf to and from the rest of the world. The
territory traded and passed from the hands of the numerous empires and clans that
took possession of the area. By the 19th century, the Thani family had managed to
establish control over the peninsula, shortly after the area would fall under the
influence of the Ottoman Empire, this did not last long, as Qatar was far from the
center of Ottoman power in Anatolia, the peninsula fell under influence of the United
Kingdom after a treaty in 1916.

In the 1930s, the existence of oil deposits in the area had already been discovered and
they began to be exploited, mainly by British companies. While the country was
beginning to modernize and the pearl trade was beginning to die out, oil and gas
prosperity would take time to manifest itself physically in the country until after
independence.

In 1971 Qatar gained its independence from the United Kingdom, being governed by
the emir Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, who was overthrown by his son Hamad bin
Khalifa Al Thani, it was under his reign that the country began to develop rapidly, being
the Doha skyline with its skyscrapers the great symbol of the country's new prosperity.

In 2013 with the ascendancy to the throne of Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani from his
father, Qatar has positioned itself as a key player in the region, as well as the richest
nation in the world with $128,647 per capita. The political changes in the Middle East
have been a challenge for Qatar, which has supported groups opposed to the
traditionally leading nations of the Arab world: Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which has
caused great tensions. But contrary to what one might think due to its size and
population, Qatar has proven to be an actor capable of interacting on equal terms with
its powerful neighbors. Increasingly connected to the world, with the venue for a
soccer World Cup looming, Qatar is seeking to cement its newfound position of power
and influence.

A little bit of the history of Al Rayyan

Before the massive expansion of Al Rayyan city, the two main areas of Al
Rayyan were Old Al Rayyan and New Al Rayyan. Old Al Rayyan consisted of
many traditional villages, while New Al Rayyan contained many large villas
occupied by members of Qatar's ruling family. [9] As the city of Al Rayyan
grew, all the eastern settlements of the municipality were incorporated as
districts of the city.

Old Al Rayyan
The Municipal Headquarters is based in the Old Al Rayyan district, as is the Al
Rayyan Security Department and the Al Rayyan Pediatric Emergency Center.
[8] On October 4, 1982, the Minister of Education, Mohammed bin Hamad bin
Abdullah Al Thani, officially opened the Al Rayyan Public Library in Old Al
Rayyan.

New Al Rayyan
Qatar Equestrian Federation headquarters in New Al Rayyan.
In the New Al Rayyan district, the Qatar Equestrian Federation (QEF) maintains
its stables and outdoor arena. Founded in 1975 and with a capacity of 1,500
spectators, the QEF Stadium is considered the main horse racing venue in the
country. The new Al Rayyan Park was opened in 2004 in a residential area of
Al Atouriya Street. Covering an area of 8,827 m², the park's facilities include a
children's play area and a café, while notable plants include date palms and
plants of the melia and jatropha genera.

Sports
Education City Stadium, the venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is planned to
be built in the city. It will have a capacity for 40,000 spectators and will contain
built-in solar panels.
Transportation
Al Shaqab underground station currently serves the Doha Metro Green Line. It
is located on Huwar Street in Old Al Rayyan, near its border with Al Shagub.
The station opened to the public on December 10, 2019 along with the other
Green Line stations. The station currently has no intermediate links. Facilities
on the premises include restrooms and a prayer room.
Another station serving Al Rayyan that is also part of the Green Line is Al
Rayyan Al Qadeem Station. It is situated in the neighboring Lebday district,
near the border with Old Al Rayyan.

WHY IS DE NAME:
The name of the city derives from the Arabic word "lightning", which translates as
"irrigation". It was given this name because of its low elevation, which allows it to
act as a floodplain during the rainy season and provide a long supply of water to the
many wild plants and crops that grew in the area.

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS CITY I A MAIN CITY FOR WC QATAR 2022:

It is one of the main cities for the 2022 world cup due to its location to the west of
the capital Doha, also because its metropolitan areas almost form a large
conglomerate, thanks to the demographic growth of recent years.

additional information

Paraguayans who wish to travel to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup should keep in
mind that there are important aspects of daily life in Qatar that are different from
what we are used to in Paraguay, both because of the law and because of the
culture. Here is some useful information:

⁃Religious freedom is allowed in Qatar, and there are worship spaces specifically allocated for

different faiths. However, religious proselytizing or the dissemination of religious messages

other than Islam, the country's official religion, is not permitted.

⁃If you plan to drive during your stay in Qatar, find out about traffic regulations. You cannot

rent vehicles or drive with a Paraguayan driving license, unless it is the international driving

license, issued by a duly authorized authority.
