iv
One of the major reasons why people marry is to have their own family.
Basically, establishing the relationship as husband and wife and exercising
responsible parenthood are attached responsibilities in marriage. Having a new baby
can be an exciting major responsibility. Skin-to-skin contact is usually referred to
as the practice where a baby is dried and laid directly on the mother's bare chest
immediately after giving birth. Offering skin-to-skin after birth will provide the baby an
assurance of trust, love, and care.

In a traditional Filipino family, the father is considered the head and the
provider of the family while the mother takes responsibility of the domestic needs and
is in charge of the emotional growth as well as values formation of the children. Their
roles differ accordingly as they bring up their children into the kind of person they want
them to be. However, at present, the family structure is evolving.

The influences from the government through its varied programs such as
family planning by POPCOM (population-commission) and responsible parenthood
through the barangay health workers (BHW) would somehow help redirect the mind-
set of the couple and the entire family as well. It helps in educating the desired number,
timing and spacing of their children, and contributes in improving the maternal,
neonatal and child health, and nutrition.

This module helps you learn the essentials of breastfeeding and immunization,
the role and responsibilities of parents in obtaining a happy and fulfilled family, how the
government influences the family as an institution, and the possible effects of human
overpopulation.

So, let’s begin!

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
➢ Discusses the essential newborn protocol (Unang Yakap) and advantages of
breastfeeding for both mother and child (H8FH-IIe-f-34, H8FH-IIe-f-35)
➢ Recognizes the importance of immunization in protecting children’s health (H8FH-
IIe-f-36)
➢ Analyzes the importance of responsible parenthood (H8FH-IIg-h-37)
➢ Explains the effects of rapid population growth and family size on the health of the
nation (H8FH-IIg-h-38, H8FH-IIg-h-40)
➢ Examines the important roles and responsibilities of parents in child rearing and
care (H8FH-I Ig-h-39)
➢ Enumerates modern family planning methods (natural and artificial) (H8FH-Iig-h-
41)

1
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

• Discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, the importance of immunization

and responsible parenthood
• Examine the important roles and responsibilities of parents in child rearing
and care toward a happy and fulfilled family
• Internalize the effects of rapid population growth and family size on the health
of the nation toward responsible citizenship.

your answer and write it in your Health notebook.

1. Families must live together in one house with the grandparents.

2. The father is the breadwinner in the family.

5. Children do not have the right to be heard.

What is It

THE NEWBORN PROTOCOL

“The Unang Yakap or
Essential Intrapartum Newborn
Care was really conceptualized
in order to have early initiation of
breastfeeding. So how early is
early? As early as delivery. The
newborn is placed strategically
on the mother’s breast so he will
be able to feed immediately
when he is hungry. What’s good
about Unang Yakap is that it
respects the readiness of the
baby to breastfeed as
manifested by feeding cues,”
explained Dr. Tetchie.

“Unang Yakap is a routine for low-risk births but I believe that babies of high
risk pregnancies will actually benefit all the more from it. It should be a routine for all
births unless there are circumstances that prevent the full implementation of the four
core steps like a non-breathing baby even after immediate and thorough drying,” said
Dr. Tetchie.

3
The most important outcome of Unang Yakap is the
promotion of breastfeeding. Since the baby is placed closely to
the mother’s breast he becomes familiar with the breast as the
source of food.

ON BREASTFEEDING
Breastfeeding--It is the traditional and ideal form of infant feeding, meeting an
infant’s nutritional needs for his first four to six months of life. It is essential in childcare.
Mother’s milk is economical and nutritious and it promotes emotional bonding between
the mother and the child. It provides a host of protective factors both cellular and
hormonal. Breast milk contains antibodies that help the immune system of the infant
become stronger. It is non-allergenic and easily digested. Babies are prone to health
issues and their immune system is at its weakest. Therefore, breastmilk is helpful and
lowers the risk of intestinal and general infections.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7600

The Rooming-In and Breastfeeding Act of 1992
The State adopts rooming-in as a national policy to encourage, protect, and
support the practice of breastfeeding.

IMMUNIZATION
Immunization--is the process whereby a
person is made immune or resistant to
an infectious disease, typically by the
administration of a vaccine.

https://bit.ly/3gl1L67

4
How Immunization Works?
Immunization protects against diseases in the same way. It gives your
immune system a practice run with a broken-up or weakened germ so it won’t give
you the disease. Your body learns how to recognize those germs and is ready to fight
them off before they can make you sick. You may get a fever or a headache after you
are given a vaccine. This is a common response to the vaccine and should pass
quickly. If you are worried any time, talk to your doctor or nurse. Once you’ve been
immunized, if you come across the same germ again, your body will remember it and
fight off the germ before you get sick. This is how immunization protects against
disease.

Why Childhood Immunizations Are Important?

Childhood vaccines or immunizations can seem overwhelming when you are
a new parent. Vaccine schedules recommended by agencies and organizations, such
as the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of
Family Physicians cover about 14 different diseases.
Vaccinations not only protect your child from deadly diseases, such as polio,
tetanus, and diphtheria, but they also keep other children safe by eliminating or greatly
decreasing dangerous diseases that used to spread from child to child.
A vaccine is a dead, or weakened version, or part of the germ that causes the
disease in question. When children are exposed to a disease in a vaccine form, their
immune system which is the body's germ-fighting machine, is able to build up
antibodies that protect them from contracting the disease if and when they are
exposed to the actual disease.
Here is a table of immunizations a baby should have:
Kinds of Immunization Age of Immunization
BCG (Anti-TB) 0-1month old and 7 years old
OPV (Anti-polio Vaccine) 0-1/2 month, 2 1/2 months, 32
months
DPT (Anti-diphtheria, Pertussis, 1 ½ months, 2 1/2months, 32
and Tetanus) months
Hepa B Vaccine 1 1/2 months, 2 1/1 months, 32
months
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) 9 months to 1 year

RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD
Parenthood is the state of being a parent. Traditionally, it means being a father
or a mother of the biological child. When adoption is involved, the parents are the legal
father and mother of the child.
Responsible parenthood on the other hand, is the will and ability of parents to
detect and respond to the needs and desire of the children and the entire family and
helping them to become responsible citizen in the community as well as in the country.
According to the Department of Health, it is a shared responsibility of the husband and
the wife to determine and achieve the desired number, spacing, and timing of their

5
children according to their own family life aspirations, taking into account psychological
preparedness, health status, socio-cultural, and economic concerns. The family, in its
varying forms, constitutes the primary focus of love, acceptance, and care toward
fulfilment to both parents and children. Failure to educate responsible parenthood to
families/couple in a certain country, will complicate social problems and issues which
eventually would possibly result to multiple consequences such as broken families,
multiple partnership of either the husband or the wife, children would tend to rebel
against their parents which would result to poor scholastic performance in school, early
marriages, drug addiction, bullying…etc. Although there are children who really have
a strong faith in God and strong enough that they look at the problems in the family as
challenges for them to finish their studies and make a difference in their own way.
These all depend on you actually, either be discouraged or be challenged! The choice
is yours.
