IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction What I need to know?
In this lesson, you are expected to identify meanings of content
specific words whether it is a denotation or a connotation.
What is new?
The meaning of certain word depends on how it is used in a
sentence. When the meaning is strictly defined using a dictionary it is
called denotation but when it is defined using associations attach to
words and expands its meaning beyond their literal definitions it is
connotation.
The sentences below show how the word is used as denotation and
connation.
1. My mother takes good care of her ornamental plants. She
waters them every day.
2. Mother waters her ornamental plants with love and care.
Water, as a verb in the dictionary, means to pour water on something,
such as a plant. This definition gives a denotative meaning to the word
water in the first sentence.
Water, as a verb in the second sentence, refers to the act of generously
taking care of the plants by giving them love and care. This implied
indirect meaning describes the connotative meaning of the word water.
Denotation vs Connotation
Word Denotation Connotation
a star ball of light/gas in a wish

What’s in?
Congratulations to all who got perfect scores in the Pre-Assessment!
To those who did not get a perfect score, do not be sad, you have the
new lesson to learn more about the denotation and connotation.
If you want to learn what a word denotes, you can look for the
meaning in the dictionary. You see, denotation is the literal meaning of
a word. In a dictionary, you’re not going to find connotations. A
connotation is what a word suggests. It’s what’s connected or
associated with a word either emotionally or culturally.
Directions: On a separate sheet of paper, write D if the underlined word
has a denotative meaning and C if connotative.
1. We plant a fruit tree in our community every year.
2. Be a role model to your younger sibling and try to plant in them
the value of patience.
3. Don’t be a tiger. Everyone is afraid of you.
4. Rain usually falls unceasingly during the months of July,
August and September.
5. The teacher’s kingdom included twelve smart kids in a truly
colorful room.

1. The denotation of dove is (n.) a small white bird
2. The denotation of skinny is “very thin”.
