Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria and some protista
other autotrophic organisms make their own food. The presence of chlorophyll enables
these organisms to make their own food as it is thepigment in plants that power the
reaction of photosynthesis by absorbing light energy needed to make their own food.
Chloroplast contains the chlorophyll. Water enters the root and is transported up to the
leaves through specialized plant cells known as xylem vessels. While th phloem
distributes the food created from the leaves to the roots. Land plants must guard
against drying out and so have evolved specialized structures known as stomata or the
opening pores to allow gas to enter and leave the leaf. Carbon dioxide cannot pass
through the protective waxy layer covering the leaf (cuticle), but it can enter the leaf
through the stoma (the singular of stomata), flanked by two guard cells. Likewise,
oxygen produced during photosynthesis can only pass out of the leaf through the
opened stomata. Unfortunately for the plant, while these gases are moving between
the inside and outside of the leaf, a great deal of water is also lost. The thylakoid is the
structural unit of photosynthesis. It is responsible for converting the light captured into
chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. Both photosynthetic prokaryotes and
eukaryotes have these flattened sacs/vesicles containing photosynthetic chemicals.
Only eukaryotes have chloroplasts with a surrounding membrane. Thylakoids are
stacked like pancakes in stacks known collectively as grana. The areas between grana
are referred to as stroma. While the mitochondrion has two membrane systems, the
chloroplast has three, forming three compartments. The mesophyll spongy layer allows
the diffusion of carbon dioxide into the layer and diffusion of oxygen out of the layer.

Station 4: Finalizing!
Instructions:
Compile all the answers from the last stations as a guide in performing this activity. Once
you’ve answered all the questions, find your teacher and recite your answers.
1. The first group to finish and get all the correct answers will only present the
organelles/parts of the leaf necessary in photosynthesis by illustrating and stating its
functions.
2. The second group to finish and get all the correct answers will only present the raw
materials and products in photosynthesis by illustrating and explaining the process.
3. The third group to finish and get all the correct answers will only present the process of
photosynthesis by explaining the 2 stages involved and what are the materials and
products needed.
4. While the last group will need to act out the whole process of photosynthesis through
role playing.
Go back to your seats after and review your answers with your other members before the
presentation. You may use your books for additional information.
