Hi, I’m Andrea. Here we are at the Martinez family picnic. All my
relatives are here. We’re a big family. Some of us look the same.
Some of us are very different. Our pets are different, too. My
cousin thinks my dog Roxy is uglier than his dog Max. But Roxy
is cuter. Roxy is also smarter and friendlier.

Journal Entries
In a journal, you write about things that happen in your life and how
they make you feel.
September 4
Today was my first day in fourth grade. I go to a
big school, and some of my classmates are new every
year. It’s nice to meet new friends, but I’m always a little
worried and scared at first. Today a girl with curly brown
hair smiled at me. A boy with black hair and glasses
asked my name. All the kids in my class were friendlier
than I expected. They made me feel happy to be there.
My old friend Sam was there, too. Now he’s taller than
me. But I don’t care. I think I’m smarter! He thinks
fourth grade is harder than third. But I think it’s more
fun. I’m happy to be back in class.

to Biking
The bicycle is not the idea of just one person. Over time,
many people contributed to its development.
The first bicycle was made of wood. It had two wheels
but no pedals. You didn’t ride it—you walked it! It was called Boneshaker
a “hobby horse” or “walking machine.”
The velocipede came next. Velocipedes had pedals.
Pedals were a good idea. With pedals, people could ride
instead of walk or push their velocipedes. But velocipedes
were hard to ride on cobblestone streets, and so they were
called “boneshakers.”
High Wheeler
Later, people rode a new kind of bicycle called a “high
wheeler.” It was made of metal and had a high front wheel
and solid rubber tires. It was more comfortable than a
boneshaker, but people could fall off easily. Women didn’t ride
high wheelers because women at the time wore long skirts.
They rode a machine with three wheels, called a tricycle.
Tricycle
The next bicycle went back to two wheels of the same size.
It had metal parts and pneumatic tires, and was called the
“safety bicycle.” This design became the standard for modern
bicycles. Then companies began to make bicycles for children.
Now everyone enjoys bicycles!

Paragraph Unity
In a paragraph, the topic sentence tells the main idea. The other sentences
that make up the body give facts and examples about the main idea. A
paragraph has unity when all the sentences refer to the main idea.
18 Write. Write about life long ago. What did children do after
school? What kinds of work did they do? What were their
houses like? What clothes did children wear? Choose a topic.
Make sure your paragraph has unity.

Our bodies are amazing. Every day they work hard to keep us healthy.
But everyone gets sick sometimes. When you have a cold, it means

Why Do We Sneeze?
Aaaaa . . . choo! When you have a cold, you often
sneeze. Why? Because germs make a home in your nose,
and they tickle you! Sneezing is your body’s way of sending
germs out of your nose. Many animals sneeze, too!
What happens? Your nose doesn’t like the germs, so
it sends a message to a part of your brain called the

your eyes push. That’s why you close your eyes when you
sneeze! You should have a tissue ready because the sneeze
happens very quickly. A sneeze can travel as fast as a car!
Some people sneeze when they don’t have a cold. It
happens when they go out into the sunshine. They are
called “photic sneezers.” Photic sneezing is an inherited
trait. It comes from one of your parents. Do you know

Amazing Acrobats
Many acts we see in circuses today have roots
in ancient societies. Jugglers and acrobats were
popular in ancient Egypt and China. Today,
Chinese circuses are more popular, more colorful,
and more exciting than ever.
Most Chinese acrobats join the circus when
they are six years old, but they can spend ten
years practicing just one of these acts!
a. Juggling: Acrobats use their feet to juggle
things. They juggle tables, chairs, umbrellas,
plates, and even people!
b. Cycling: In this act, acrobats use “monocycles” (bicycles with one
wheel). The most famous act is the “bird.”
c. T
ight-wire: This act is about 2,000 years old. Brave acrobats walk,
cycle, or jump on a wire that is high in the air.

Cool Families
Imagine you live with the same relatives all your life,
from the day you are born until the day you die! You
are always with your mom, your sisters, and your
maternal aunts (mom’s sisters). You also spend time
with your paternal aunts. You clean them and
rest next to them. You don’t leave them to go to
school, and they don’t leave you. Not for one
minute! This is how the females in baboon
families live.
For orcas, there is a very special
relationship between mothers and sons.
Orca daughters often go to live with a new
family. Orca sons, however, usually stay with
their mom their whole life. The moms look
after their sons very well and protect them.
Sometimes, the sons live with another female,
for example, an aunt, instead of mom.
Young meerkats play games every day while
their parents look for food (like tasty insects).
Their brothers and sisters are the babysitters. When
meerkats turn one month old, they don’t have a
party or balloons. Instead, they go out for the first time
and learn to hunt. When they are four months old, they can
already find their own food! Bye-bye, mom and dad!

Celebration Time!
People around the world pick, or harvest, food that
grows. Then they have a holiday. Let’s read about some
harvest celebrations! A.
1. Every February, the people of Mendoza, Argentina,
harvest their grapes. Then they celebrate for a month!
There are parades, shows, and fireworks. They always
choose a Harvest Queen, too.
2. Chanthaburi, a town in Thailand, is famous for its tasty
fruit. People celebrate the fruit at harvest time in May.
The Fruit Fair begins with a parade of floats made
from thousands of fruits and vegetables.
3. The people of Swaziland in Africa celebrate harvest
every December or January. Before the Incwala B.
festival can begin, the king must eat the first fruit.
After that, everyone else eats.
4. France’s famous Menton Lemon festival starts in
February. There are big parades with floats decorated
with lemons and oranges. More than 200,000 people
from around the world come to Menton for this
festival.

Video games / Electric lights are very important. If we have them in our
home, then we can see at night. Having electricity also means we can use
refrigerators, computers, TVs, and other modern / old-fashioned things that
make life / towns easier. Microwaves and dishwashers, for example, help us do
chores / fires such as cooking meals and washing dishes. Did you know that
1.4 billion people in the world don’t have electric lights? Life is more
modern / difficult for them. To get hot water, they have to make a
fire / chore. If they don’t live in a life / town or city, then there might not be
a hospital or a bank near them. However, life / things are easier for them if they
have a cell phone.

A stilt house is a home on “legs.” Families usually put their animals or crops
under the house and live upstairs. They live high up so that if it rains, the water
can’t enter the rooms. Also, snakes and spiders can’t climb the stilts and visit
the family at night! Finally, it is often cooler upstairs. Stilt houses are high,
safe, and dry.
Today you can find stilt houses in South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
However, they are not all the same. In some Vietnamese stilt houses, for example,
the left side of the house is for the women; the men’s rooms are on the right.
Houses often have two staircases, too. In Thailand, the houses are often built
on water and face the mountains. They have bigger doors than Vietnamese
stilt houses.
Modern stilt houses look the same as they did long ago, but they are very
different inside! Today most modern stilt houses have electric lights, for example.
They have fridges, TVs, and computers. And of course, most people who live there
have cell phones!

Of Bumps
and Bruises
Ouch! You bruised yourself again!
A few minutes later you have a big
red bump. How does this happen?
When we bruise ourselves, we
break a small blood vessel, called a
capillary. Blood leaves the capillary,
but where can it go? It can’t come
out of your skin because you didn’t cut
yourself. So it fills the tissues under the
skin. As more blood travels to the place,
the bump gets bigger and redder.
Most bruises disappear after two weeks. But
they often change color first! After two days, your bruise
turns blue or purple. By day six, it’s green. And by day eight or nine, it looks
yellow to light brown.
Did you know that cold blood moves more slowly than warm blood? Next
time you get a bruise yourself, make it cold! Put a cold wet towel, or a pack
of frozen vegetables, on the bruise for half an hour. That way, less blood
travels to it. And you will get better sooner!

Happy Birthday!
Do you have a favorite party game that you like to
play on your birthday? In Mexico and other Latin American
countries, children often celebrate their birthdays with a piñata.
First, the children form a circle and sing a funny song, which makes them laugh.
Then, children take turns to stand in the middle with their eyes covered. Sometimes
their friends turn them round and round so that they are dizzy! The child in the
middle has to use a stick to hit the piñata. Suddenly there is a loud CRASH! The
piñata breaks, and lots of candy falls on the floor. The children stop singing and run
to pick up the candy. It’s a wonderful party game.
Piñatas come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. Piñateros, the
people who make piñatas, say that the most popular shapes are
characters from TV shows and movies. Birthday boys and girls also like
action figures, animals, guitars, race cars, princesses, and pop stars. To
make these shapes, piñateros use balloons, cardboard, and wire. One
piñata can take days, or even weeks, to make. Next, piñateros decorate
the outside with pretty colors. Families then put candy, fruit, and small
toys inside the piñata. Piñatas come in every color under the sun. And
they’re great fun! Happy Birthday, everyone!
One of the largest piñatas
in the world was a donkey.
