1.
During mil, itary use vehicles will often be used station-
ary. To provide power for the equipment (e.g. radio, heat-
er) the engine has to run for long periods of time unless
there is an auxiliary power unit. In this kind of use (low
engine speed, low output) the engine can become fouled due
to a non-optimal combustion process.

3. REQUIREDTEST CONDITIONS
3.1 Test vehicle
Ensure that:
a. The vehicle has been prepared and equipped to the
standard anticipated for operations or as specified by the
test plan.
b. Maintenance and service operations have been performed
to ensure the vehicle is operating within specifications.
Give particular attention to the engine.
c. Reference fuels and lubricants as specified by relevant
NATO authority (after ratification) pave been used. Until
NATO agreement is ratified, developer-specified POL will
be used.
d. There are no leaks in the engine exhaust system.
e. The engine lubricating oil is at its maximum correct
level.
f. The engine idling speed (and the fast idling speed, if
applicable) has been adjusted in conformance with the man-
ufacturers specifications.
g. Normal operating temperatures of fluids and components
are reached before testing begins.
3.2 Environment
- desirable ambient temperature : 5 "C se s 35 'C
- desirable atmospheric pressure: 1 91 kPa
- relative humidity : I 95 %

4. TEST PROCEDURE
4.1 Jnitial enaine Dower measurement
To establish a baseline figure for engine power, the power
of the engine is to be measured by the use of one of the
methods detailed in AVTP 03-70.
Measure the exhaust smoke density in a full load condition
for at least 4 engine speeds between 20 % above idling
speed and the speed corresponding with max. torque.
Measurement of the blow-by volume is recommended.

4.4.3 If the above test has shown a significant power loss, per-
form the procedure of 4.3 and 4.4.1 again. If the full
power of the engine cannot be recovered, perform diagnos-
tic activities and remedial action as appropriate.
5. DATA REQUIRED
5.1 General narameters
- vehicle identification:
. mileage
- note parameters to be checked as laid down in the
test plan.
- environment conditions= '
. temperature
. atmospheric pressure
e relative humidity.
- description of engine power measurement.,
6. PRESENTATION OF DATA
Present the data in narrative, tabular, graphical, picto-
rial or other format as appropriate.
Include:
Statement of the power lost as a result of the idling
Feriod.
b. Photographs taken during the inspection.
