Abstract

The objective of this one group-experimental Action Research was to determine the

effectiveness of the developed material in enhancing the literacy of grade 7 pupils in Philippine

history. The pupils were given a booklet as an intervention to help them enhance their literacy

regarding Philippine history. The findings disclosed that pupils’ level of literacy about Philippines

History before the intervention was Moderate with M=20.70; SD=2.10. After the utilization of

the intervention the level of literacy was greatly improved to High with M=28.52; SD=1.02. This

means that after utilizing the intervention, their scores were improved. Using the Wilcoxon

signed rank the results revealed that the there was a significant difference between the pre-test

and post-test numeracy performances of the pupils before and after the utilization of developed

material. Therefore, the researchers concluded that there was an improvement in the literacy

test results of Grade 7 after utilizing the Booklet. Hence, the use of it will be of great help in

enhancing students’ literacy about the Philippine history.

Context and Rationale

It was year 2019 when the virus became a global pandemic. According to a research

published by Sumitra Pokhrel and Roshan Chetri “The COVID-19 pandemic has created the

largest disruption of education systems in human history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion students in

more than 200 countries. Additionally, Pokhrel (2021) stated that closures of schools,

institutions and other learning spaces have impacted more than 94% of the world’s student

population. It is right to say that the pandemic had brought changes in the education system.

Within a short span of the COVID-19 pandemic, many researchers have shared their works on

teaching and learning in different ways and the Department of Education did just that.

Gavan (2021) defines distance learning as "a learning delivery mode in which learning

takes place between the teacher and students who are physically separated during instruction."

The Department of Education (DepEd), according to Vallespin (2021), uses Modular Distance

Learning (MDL) in all public schools after a DepEd poll revealed that 8.8 million parents

supported it to continue learning amidst COVID-19 pandemic.

Binalbagan Catholic College Junior High School Department was using a modular

distance learning in their lessons through retrieving and getting their module inside the school.

While modular learning is thought to have advantages such as new skills, more freedom, and

learning at their own pace, and family time in answering their module are still having

disadvantages. The primary obstacles identified by Dangle and Sumanoang (2020) were a lack

of school funds for module production and delivery, pupils' struggles with self-studying, and

parents' lack of understanding to academically assist their child/children. The researchers

assisted in conducting a pre-test to Grade VII pupils by giving the questionnaire to the adviser

of the grade 7 pupils with the consent of the principal.

Mastery in the Philippine history plays vital role especially that students nowadays are

prone to online games and social media platforms, wherein social media delivered

misinformation. The researchers developed intervention that would help pupils improved their

literacy in history specifically in terms of the Philippines History. The researchers aimed to

determine the effectiveness of the developed material in enhancing the literacy of the grade 7

pupils in Philippine history which was the booklet.

Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

This study proposed a developed material that can help students in enhancing

their literacy in the Philippine history. A booklet was utilized that includes different lessons in

Araling Panlipunan subject in a specific topic which was the Philippine history. The researchers

aimed to determine the effectiveness of the developed material in enhancing the literacy of the

grade 7 pupils. The strategy that the researchers used was, they seek assistance to the grade 7

adviser and the school principal in conducting the research study.

Action Research Questions

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the develop material in enhancing

grade 7 pupils in terms of their literacy in the Philippine history.

It aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils before the utilization of the developed

material?

2. What is the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils after the utilization of the developed

material?

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils before and

after the utilization of the develop material?

Null Hypothesis
There is no significant difference in the level of literacy of Grade 7 pupils before and

after the utilization of the Booklet in Enhancing Students Literacy In Philippine History

Action Research Methods

a. Participants

The participants of the study are Grade 7 students of Binalbagan Catholic

College Junior High School Department S.Y. 2021-2022. There are 23 grade 7 pupils

identified through purposive sampling. . In Purposive Sampling, the researcher relies on

his own judgment when choosing members of population to participate in the study.

According to Etikan (2016), the purposive sampling technique, also called judgment

sampling, is the deliberate choice of a participant due to the qualities the participant

possesses. It is a nonrandom technique that does not need underlying theories or a set

number of participants.

b. Data Gathering Methods

The following procedures will be observed by the researchers in gathering data.

The researchers secured a letter of permission to the principal and Grade 7

adviser of Binalbagan Catholic College Junior High School Department to conduct an

Action Research to the Grade 7 pupils. The second research instrument is the

researcher-made intervention itself the booklet that includes literacy in the Philippine

history.

The letter of consent was given to the participants, the participants went to

School every Monday during their module distribution and retrieval, abiding the health

protocols of the school and took the pre-test. The participants will be given two minutes

to answer the research made instruments.

After the participants took pre-test, the intervention was then introduce and

discuss to the grade 7 pupils assist by the researchers. The booklet were distributed to

the participants as a review material for one (1) weeks. On the one week, the

participants took the post numeracy test in school.

c. Data Analysis

The following statistical tools will be used to treat the data:

Statement of the Problem 1 sought to determine the level of literacy of the grade

7 pupils before the utilization of the developed material, mean and standard deviation

was utilized. While, in the statement of the Problem 2 sought to answer the level of

literacy of the grade 7 pupils after the utilization of the booklet, mean and standard

deviation was utilized. Finally, in statement of the Problem 3 sought to answer what

significant difference in the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils before and after the

utilization of the booklet, Wilcoxon signed rank was utilized.

d. Ethical Considerations

This research study was conducted to the participants with the permission of

the School Principal of the Binalbagan Catholic College Junior High School Department,

and the Grade 7 adviser and students. This study was taken place within the school

regular settings and schedules of the retrieval and distribution of modules. There was no

remuneration involved and no instruction that can compromise the learners during the

conduct of the study. Minimum health protocols was also observed strictly like wearing

of facemask, hand sanitizing, and social distancing. Moreover, consent from the parents

was sought. On the other hand, the data collected from the participants was disposed

and kept confidentially after the completion and approval of the study.

Discussion of Results and Findings

Level of Literacy Test

1. What is the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils before the utilization of the develop

material?

2. What is the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils after the utilization of the develop

material?

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of literacy of the grade 7 pupils before and

after the utilization of the develop material?

Pre-test and Post-test Means of enhancing the level of literacy

The following data presents the comparison of the level of the numeracy test

performance of the pupils before and after the intervention. Data were obtained after the pupils

took the literacy test.

The result shows the level of enhancing students’ literacy in the Philippine History. They

have a mean score of 20.70; SD=2.10 this was before the utilization of the booklet. However,

after the pupils were utilizing the intervention, their scores improved. The post-test mean score

of the pupils rose to 28.52; SD=1.02. With a mean difference of -7.82 was recorded between

the pre-test and post-test before and after the utilization of the intervention.

Comparison of the pre-test and post-test Literacy Tests Performance

The following data shows the result of the level of test performance of the pupils

before and after the utilization of the developed material which was the booklet. This study

aimed to determine if there is a significant difference in the level of the literacy of the grade 7

pupils in Philippine History before and after the utilization of the booklet.

shown in table 3, the results revealed that the there was a significant difference between the

pre-test and post-test numeracy performances of the pupils before and after the utilization of

the booklet in Enhancing Students Literacy in Philippine History.

Reflected at the means, the post-test mean score was higher than the pre-test mean

score. This simply means that a greater amount of enhancing students’ literacy in Philippine

history took place after the pupils were exposed to the intervention. This was the reason why

the pupils had an improvement in their level of literacy in the Philippine history as reflected in

their post-test. Thus, the study clearly showed that the used the booklet in Enhancing Students

Literacy

In Philippine History gives positive impacts on the participants’ in enhancing students’ literacy in

Philippine history and was an effective intervention.

In Philippine History

Introduction

Students and teachers at all levels of education are transitioning from classroom to

computer as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases continues to rise. Not every subject lends

itself to a smooth transition to distance learning, as students and instructors have discovered.

Distance learning has presented challenges to teachers trying to adapt to lecturing online

(O'Keefe. 2020).

Plan for Dissemination and Utilization

The research results will be presented to the internal and external stakeholders of the

schools such as teachers, school administrator/s, parent-teacher associations, and other school

personnel and district personnel during the called meeting or research conferences. This

context will be used as the venue to share findings and results of the research that will be the

basis for discussion for school improvement especially on curriculum and operations.

Conclusions

Based on the data and information acquired, the researchers have reached a conclusion.

The numeracy post-test results of Grade 7 students improved after using the developed

material was the Booklet that includes lessons about Philippine history. It was discovered that

after the intervention, the pupils’ literacy level increased, particularly their understanding about

what are the lessons that enhance their literacy using the developed material. The use of the

developed material which was the booklet could be extremely beneficial in helping students in

enhancing their literacy level particularly in the Philippine history.

Recommendation

The researcher suggests the following:

The Aral-FUN Booklet will be used by Grade 7 pupils of Binalbagan Catholic College- Junior

High School Department as basis to help pupils improve their literacy in Philippine history.

Continue to use the Aral-FUN Booklet to provide pupils with pertinent knowledge,

particularly in enhancing students’ knowledge about Philippine history.

Utilized the Aral-FUN Booklet as a review material in enriching concepts of the basic

information and facts about Philippine history.

More study is needed to confirm the effectiveness of the Aral-FUN Booklet as an aid for

boosting pupils’ literacy in performance in modular distance learning concepts.
