Classification & Specification

The SYM T880 brake system in C3 lab is a drum brake ( Leading-and-trailing type )

Fixed wheel cylinder

Fixed anchor

Due to the deliver part of the system, it can be consider as a type of parking brake (Foot brake
sharing type)

B. OVERALL ABOUT BRAKE SYSTEM

PURPOSE
The brake decelerate or stop a vehicle in motion, or prevent a parked vehicle from moving.
BRAKING MECHANISMS
a) Foot brake
 Overview
 Foot brakes are used to control vehicle speed and stop the vehicle.
 Disc brakes are used on front wheels while disk/drum brakes are used on rear wheels.
Page |5

 Operation & Classification

When the brake pedal is depressed  Create hydraulic pressure and operates as follows:

 Disc brakes : Stop the rotation of the wheel due to the friction which occurs when the
disc brake pad pushes against the rotor.
Page |6

 Drum brakes (which is the type of SYM 880) : The brake shoe expands. This stop the
rotation of the wheel due to the friction which occurs by pushing of the brake lining
against the brake drum.

 Classification of drum brakes: Depend on the leading and trailing shoe

b) Parking brake
 Overview
 Foot brakes are used mainly when the car is parked.
 They mechanically lock the rear wheels.
 Mainternance items include the adjustment of the parking brake lever.

 Classification

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
 In order to ensure the safety of the vehicle and the ability of high-speed operation, the
braking system must meet the following requirements:
 Good braking performance.
 Easy to operate, good directional stability during braking.
 Braking smoothness is good.
 Good heat dissipation, easy to adjust.

COMPARISON

Comparision Drum brake Disc brake

Pros - Cheap - More stable than the drum
- Simple brake when braking
- Closed in side the brake drum so can - Better at realeasing heat
be prevented from bad weather resulted in long lifetime
- Ability to power up (suitable with - Easier for mainternance
heavy duty truck) - Lighter
- Worn out evenly
Cons - Worse at releasing heat so when - More expensive
using in a long time can reduce the - Open to the atmostphere
ability to brake so can be affected by dust,
- Curved brake shoe  not worn out sand,…
evenly - No power up ability
