Welcome to our Music class I am Sir Jason your teacher and your guide for this adventure

Before we continue our journey today, let me just give you the first thing that we must accomplish (MELC)
Good day my dear students! Are you ready to learn something new today? This time, we will be
going to discover the music of our ancestors, particularly the indigenous music of Mindanao.

Say: Mindanao is the second largest island of the Philippines, Located at the southern end of archipelago.
The island is part of an island group of the same name that also includes its adjacent islands, notably Sulu
archipelago. Mindanao culture consists of Islamic and non- Islamic cultural groups. Instrumental music in
Mindanao produce their sounds from different materials which are abundant in their own place.

Say: Music is a form of expression and is said to be the organ of the soul. Music plays a significant role in
our daily lives. There is music for different occasion such as birth, weddings and for funerals. Truly, life
is lifeless without music. In this lesson we will going to learn the instrumental music of Mindanao its
distinctive characteristics, and its functions.

Musical Ensemble in Mindanao
A. Kulintang Ensemble - gong-based ensemble used by the Maguindanao and
Maranao of western Mindanao, the Tausug, the Yakan, and the Sama-Bajao of
Sulu archipelago. They have varied functions but are mostly used for
celebrations/ rituals and are mainly divided into types:
1. Kulintangan/Kwintangan – ensembles of 6-8 hanging melody gongs in a row,
hung on ropes in pyramidal order, with the smaller and higher-pitched gongs near
the top

2. Tahunggo, Agung, Salmagi, BlowonSemagi – suspended gong ensembles (9-11


gongs, played a melody and drone player) in various names according to each
tribe; ensemble may be completed with 1 or 2 drums

Kulintang – is an important social property. This instrument of the ensemble is a


highly valued priceless heirloom that can command a high price as dowries. The
ownership of these instruments indicates high social status and cultivated taste.

Agung – a large, deep-rimmed gong, vertically suspended, hanged in a wooden


frame.

Dabakan -The dabakan is a single-headed Philippine drum, primarily used as a


supportive instrument in the kulintang ensemble. 

Gandingan - The gandingan is a Philippine set of four large, hanging gongs used


by the Maguindanao as part of their kulintang ensemble

B. Bamboo Ensemble – according to Philippine legends, the first man and woman
are born out of bamboo. Bamboo is also considered among early Filipinos as a
spiritual connection from our physical world to the spiritual. Many bamboo
instruments were made for this purpose while some were also used for
entertainment and personal expression. The different manners in plying the
bamboo instruments include: blowing, shaking or hitting and plucking.
Gabbang – a native xylophone in Sulu, a bamboo keyboard on top, constructed
out of wood. Ordinarily, its main body is shaped like a coffin: keys are struck
with two

mallets, each with a strip of rubber fastened to its underside.

Seronggagandi – a guitar-like made of bamboo, cut before one nod and after
next. Two cords are slit loose side by side from the outer skin fibers of the
bamboo itself and these are given tension by means of bridges. A hole is then cut
into the bamboo just under the two cords, to serve as resounding holes.

Music plays an important role in their daily lives. It is a part of their culture and tradition. There are music
pertaining to life cycles, for religious purposes, for weddings and for funerals. Now le us explore the solo
instruments.
1. Kudyapi - is a  two-stringed, fretted boat-lute made of wood. It is the only stringed
instrument among the people of Mindanao , and one of several among other groups
such as the Maranao and Manobo. It is four to six feet long with nine frets made of
hardened beeswax.
The kudyapi is a kind of lute. Common to all kudyapi instruments, a constant drone is
played with one string while the other, an octave above the drone, plays the melody with
a kabit or rattan pluck plectrum or kubit.

2. Suling – is a flute made mainly of 'tamiang' bamboo (Schizostachyum blumei), a long


tube bamboo with a which has very thin surface. The head of suling, near a small hole,
is circled with a thin band made of rattan to produce air vibration.
