TELLING THE STORY

ACTIVITY 5. Fill in the gaps in the table as the story is told.

After Jerusalem was destroyed, the people lost their city, their 1. TEMPLE and their
2. KING.

For those behind and those taken away, the Exile was the time of asking deep
questions; a time of national sorrow and confessing sins.

Hope was focused on restoring the kingdom: Jerusalem, the 3. TEMPLE and the 4.
KING, a descendants of 5. DAVID.

After 50 years, the Jews were allowed to return home and rebuild. They were now a
faith community, not yet a nation. Many Jews remained in Exile.

The walls of Jerusalem were built by 6. NEHEMIAH. The Old Testament scriptures
were assembled by godly 7. PRIESTS and 8. SCRIBES. But, apart from one brief period,
there was never again a 9. KING. The Jews were ruled by succession of foreign powers for
over 500 years.

People looked forward to the fulfilment of God’s promises the coming 10. KING. He
was God’s anointed (Hebrew 11. MESSIAH; Greek 12. CHRIST/KHRISTOS). He was a
descendant of David. He would establish God’s Kingdom on earth.
Mark’s Gospel tells us that 13. JOHN THE BAPTIST came, preparing the way for the
coming king. (Mark 1.1-14).

D. UNDERSTANDING THE NEW TESTAMENT

Telling the Story

generations. It is the time when the ROMANS ruled the “civilized world”.

2. The books and letters were written in GREEK - the common language of the empire.

3. Jesus himself did NOT write any books (TRUE)

4. New Testament books were written by first generation of Christians. (TRUE)

5. As with the Old Testament, there are several different kinds of books in the collection.
(TRUE).

6. These manuscripts were first to be written by Paul and other apostles travelled around
the empire planting new churches and then moving on. They are called LETTERS.

7. The apostles could not normally return to visit the churches because (TRAVEL WAS
SLOW). So, he would write a letter advising them on different matters and send it by a
personal messenger.

8. These books began to be written as early Church realized that Jesus’ return might not be
in their lifetime. It became important to have a written record of his ministry teaching
death and Resurrection. GOSPEL.

9. The second half of Luke’s Gospel and tells the history of the early Church and of the
spread of Christian faith in Rome is the ACTS OF THE APOSTLES.

10. The book gives the vision and writing of a man called John and is about the action of
God in history and behind history is the REVELATION.

HARRISON Q. PLAZA CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 1

CHAPTER III.
EDUCATION AMONG THE HEBREWS

ACTIVITY 1.

What is Shabbat?

Shabbat is the seventh day of the Jewish week and is the day of rest and
abstention from work as commanded by God. shabbat involves two interrelated
commandments: to remember (zachor) and to observe (shamor).

What is Kiddush?

Kiddush literally, "sanctification", is a blessing recited over wine or grape

juice to sanctify the Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Additionally, the word refers to a
small repast held on Shabbat or festival mornings after the prayer services and
before the meal.

What is Havdalah?

Havdalah is Hebrew for “separation” and refers to the verbal declaration

made at the end of Shabbat or a Jewish holiday, in which the holy day is separated
from the mundane period that follows. Since Jewish days begin and end with
nightfall, Havdalah may be said only once darkness has fallen on Saturday night.
Calculate that in advance for any spot in the world here.

It is the woman who begins with Sabbath celebrations. Why do you think this is so?

As practice, it is the woman who begins the Sabbath celebrations by lighting

the candle. The woman in the house determines the spirituality in the home. She
encourages the study of Torah. She also transforms her home into a place of
holiness, peace and tranquility. That is why, it is fitting that she be the one to bring
the extra measure of light and holiness with the Shabbat candles.
