1. What is network functions virtualization (NFV)?

NFV enables users to realize the benefits of the cloud by replacing closed appliances
with their choice of software applications that can be hosted anywhere in the
network on their choice of open hardware.

3. Where did NFV come from?
From service providers!

• In October 2012 a group of

service providers described a path
to applying cloud principles to the
telco network

• They called their approach

Network Functions Virtualisation,
or NFV

• They published their proposal in

the famous NFV white paper

uCPE solves the problem with appliance proliferation
Lots and lots and lots of boxes!

• Customers may demand certain brands of devices for SD-WAN, firewall, router, VoIP
• Verizon SD-WAN includes Versa, VMware, Cisco/Viptela, Aruba/Silver Peak, Fortinet
• BT SD-WAN includes Cisco, VMware, Nokia and Fortinet
• And they need different sizes for different locations e.g. SOHO, hub, HQ, data center
• Stringent SLAs mean lots of inventory in numerous depot locations uCPE approach:
Appliance approach: 3 server types
39 types of appliances must be stocked at every depot per depot
