Sustainable Development Goals Overview
On 1 January, 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development—adopted by world leaders in September at
an historic UN Summit 2015 held at UN Headquarters in
New York — officially came into force. Over the next
fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply
to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of
poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change,
while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium

Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end
all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that
they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-
income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-
hand with strategies that build economic growth and
addresses a range of social needs including education,
health, social protection, and job opportunities, while
tackling climate change and environmental protection. Sustainable Development Goals 25
Three Dimensions of Sustainable Development
• Sustainable development has been defined as
development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.
• For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial
to harmonize three core elements: economic growth,
social inclusion and environmental protection.

Sustainable Development SDGs: UNIVERSALITY

Summit 2015
• While the SDGs are not legally binding,
governments are expected to take ownership and
establish national frameworks for the achievement
of the 17 Goals. SDGs: INTEGRITY
• Countries have the primary responsibility for follow-
up and review of the progress made in
implementing the Goals, which will require quality,
accessible and timely data collection. Regional
follow-up and review will be based on national-level
analyses and contribute to follow-up and review at SDGs: TRANSFORMATIVE

What is green building?
A ‘green’ building is a building that, in its design,
construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative
impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate
and natural environment. Green buildings preserve precious
natural resources and improve our quality of life.

There are a number of features which can make a building

‘green’. These include:

• Efficient use of energy, water and other resources

• Use of renewable energy, such as solar energy
• Pollution and waste reduction measures, and the enabling
of re-use and recycling
• Good indoor environmental air quality
• Use of materials that are non-toxic, ethical and
sustainable
• Consideration of the environment in design, construction
and operation
• Consideration of the quality of life of occupants in design,
construction and operation
• A design that enables adaptation to a changing
environment

Any building can be a green building, whether it’s a home, an

office, a school, a hospital, a community centre, or any other
type of structure, provided it includes features listed above.
