SELF CONCEPT QUESTIONNAIRE

AIM
To assess the self concept of the subject using the self-concept
questionnaire by R.K. Saraswat.

Description of test

Name of the test :Self Concept Questionnaire

Year:1981
The inventory contains 48 items. Each dimension contains 8
items. The self concept inventory provides 6 separate
dimensions of self concept: Social, physical, moral, intellectual,
moral, educational and temperamental. It also gives a total self
concept score. The operational definitions of these dimensions
are:
a. Physical: Individual’s view of their body, health, strength and
physical appearance.
b. Social: individual’s sense of worth in social interactions.
c. Temperamental: Individual’s view of their prevailing
emotional state or predominance of a particular kind of
emotional reaction.
d. Educational: Individual’s self view in relation to school,
teachers, and extracurricular activities.
e. Moral: Individuals estimation of their moral worth- right and
wrong activities.
f. Intellectual: Individual’s awareness of their intelligence and
capacity of problem solving and judgements.

Psychometric properties
Reliability: Reliability was found using test-retest method. (.91)
Validity: Expert opinions were attained to establish the test
validity. 100 items were given to 25 psychologists to classify the
items into categories in order to classify the items to the
category to which it belongs.
Standardisation: The questionnaire was standardized on 1000
students of 20 high schools of Delhi. The students were from
9th and 10th classes, ranging from 14-18 years of age, of both
sexes

PRECAUTIONS
i. The room should be quiet and well lit.
ii. Confidentiality of data must be maintained.
iii. Subject must be informed that there is no right answer.
iv. The natural response should be given by subject.

CONDUCTION
The subject was brought to the laboratory and made
comfortable. Rapport was formed and instructions were
given. The subject was asked to fill their particulars on the
answer sheet and to complete the questionnaire of the option
of their choice on the answer sheet. On the completion of the
questionnaire the subject's introspective report was taken.

SCORING
The alternatives are arranged in such away that the scoring
system for all the items remain the same i.e. 5, 4,3,2,1. If the
respondent put a tick mark for first alternative the score is 5, for
second alternative the score is 4,for third alternative the score is
3 and so on. The summated score of all 48 items provides the
total self concept score while a low self score shows low Self -
concept. Transfer the scores of each item on the front page
against that item. Now add all the scores of 8 items given in the
column, this will give you the score for that particular
dimension of Self Concept.

INTERPRETATION
Self concept may be defined as the way we perceive ourselves
and the ideas we hold about our competences and attributes. It is
the concept we have of our abilities. The respondents self-
concept score is 185. It is an indication of above average self
concept.

a. Physical self concept: Describes the individual’s view of their


body, health,physical appearance and strength . The subject
score is 32 indicating a high Self concept . Eg subject thinks
herself to have a good physical appearance.(take a statement
from the response sheet indicating a high self concept)
b. Social self-concept: individual’s sense of worth in social
interactions. The subject score is 30 indicating Above average
Self concept . Eg(take a statement from the response sheet
indicating above average self concept ,where a statement has
been given a score of atleast 4)
c. Temperamental self-concept: Individual’s view of their
prevailing emotional state or predominance of a particular kind
of emotional reaction. The subject score is 32 indicating a high
Self concept . Eg(take a statement from the response sheet
indicating a high self concept That is where subject has got a
score of 4 or 5)
d. Educational self-concept: Individual’s self view in relation to
school, teachers, and extracurricular activities. The subject score
is 33 indicating a high Self concept . Eg(take a statement from
the response sheet indicating a high self concept That is where
subject has got a score of 4 or 5))
e. Moral self-concept: Individuals estimation of their moral
worth- right and wrong activities. The subject score is 32
indicating a Above average Self concept . Eg(take a statement
from the response sheet indicating above average self concept
That is where subject has got a score of 4 or 3)
f. Intellectual self-concept: Individual’s awareness of their
intelligence and capacity of problem solving and judgements.
The subject score is 32 indicating Above average Self concept .

CONCLUSION
Using self-concept questionnaire the subject was seen to have an
above average self –concept .
