BIRD CARE IN SUMMER AND RAINY SEASON

Summer and Rainy season are disaster for aviaries in Pakistan due to
extreme hot and humid weather. Following are the steps to prevent the birds from
heat wave and diseases cause by overheating.

1. Birds do not regulate temperature the same way we do. They lack sweat glands
so to regulate their temperature, birds lose heat through the evaporation of water
by panting and vibration of throat structures. So whenever you observe your birds
panting with their mouths open it is a clear indication that you need to do
something to lower the temperature in your bird room.

2. Use electrolytes / ORS. Multivitamins should be administered in cool water. Serve

for 3 hours than replace with clean cool water.

3. Ensure proper ventilation of bird room and use green netting to the walls facing East.
Remove any glass from windows and replace with wire mesh if possible. Provide a
shade to walls facing sun.

4. Bird cages should be positioned in such a way so that the bird can always choose
to get out of direct sunlight if it gets too hot. Remember that the sun changes
direction during the day and that your bird can get overheated if no shade is
available.

5. Only feed the quantity of green vegetables / fruits which they can eat in 1-2 hours.

6. Make sure that the food you serve them is clean and fresh. During summers / rainy
season food can collect dust and spoil more quickly. For this reason, fresh food
should only be left out for a few hours and any leftover fruits / veggies should be
disposed-off.

7. Birds’ feeding and drinking utensils should be cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis.

8. Do not let the temperatures reach ABOVE 40 degrees Celsius. Birds can handle
heat better than mammals and their normal body temperature ranges from 104 to
105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 - 41 degrees Celsius). But any increase over the
basic body temperature could cause heat exhaustion (overheating) in your pet
birds.

9. For lowering the temperature use 2-3 buckets (clay pots preferably) full of water and
big exhaust fan in bird room. Installation of fans in bird room is a good option to
lower temperature. Ceiling fans or movable pedestal / wall mounted bracket fans
can be of great help to circulate air. Birds should never be exposed directly to
strong airflow as it can cause sickness.

10. Open aviaries can use desert air cooler for this purpose, but in a closed room
environment desert cooler is a disease itself.

11. Misting your birds regularly is also very helpful in dealing with heat related issues.

12. Plants can be used in open sheds to keep temperatures in lower limits.

13. If you are using cages with galvanized trays, remove the trays.

14. Install perches at height maximum 1.5 feet above the cage floor.

15. Daily sweep the floor and spray the area with light dose of disinfectant in the evening
especially in rainy season.

16. Do not change the diet suddenly - only give additives as diet change leads to stress.

17. Change their water 2 times a day. If you are using clay pots for water scrub them
daily. Spraying / misting your birds daily would be helpful.

18. Never feed the seed mix that has gotten wet due rain as it is one of the major causes
of health related issues in birds during summer / rainy season.

19. Careful monitoring of birds is necessary to detect illness early. If you observe any
bird sitting fluffed up, vomiting, with dirty vents / dirty feathers on face or breathing
heavily separate it and seek medical advice.

20. You must have a handy medical box for your birds all the times so that emergency
cases may be treated immediately.

21. Do not take breed from your pairs and provide them with adequate rest by leaving
them in flight cages during this period till the time temperatures reach within normal
limits.
