Post by Johnson Ajayi » Thu Jun 16, 2022 12:57 pm
THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST (MATTHEW
28:1-10; MARK 16:1-8; LUKE 24:13-49) Resurrection is a process of bringing back or coming back to life from dead after one has been declared dead. On the third day after the burial of Jesus, (Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome) went to the tomb early in the morning. Their mission was to anoint the body of Jesus and to preserve it from decay. As they approached the tomb, they wondered who helped them to roll away the heavy stone which had been used to secure the tomb. On getting there, they saw an angel who told them that Jesus has risen and that they should go and tell the disciples and Peter about it. And that they should tell them that He will be at Galilee where they will see Him. When Peter and John heard the saying, they ran to the tomb. There, they saw the linen shroud that was used to wrap the body of Jesus, but Jesus was not there. This made them to believe that Jesus was alive again. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS TO CHRISTIANS 1. Jesus conquered death by His resurrection. This was as sign of having power over death through His divine power. 2. Jesus victory over death is our hope of eternal life. 3. As God raised Jesus from the dead, Christians will also be raised from the dead on the last day to live forever with God. 4. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is celebrated all over the world during the time of Easter.
APPEARANCES OF JESUS AFTER THE RESURRECTION
Jesus appeared to His disciples at different times after His resurrection from the dead. These various appearances are recorded as follows: APPEARANCE IN MATTHEW’S GOSPEL (MATTHEW 28:16-20) Here, Jesus appeared to the women disciples telling them to inform the rest of the eleven disciples to meet Him in Galilee. The disciples met with Him and worshipped Him. Thereafter, Jesus gave them His final instruction known as the GREAT COMMISSION. APPEARANCE IN MARK’S GOSPEL (MARK 16:9-18) i. Here, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene who later went to inform the rest of the disciples, but they did not believe her. ii. Jesus also appeared to two men who were on their way to the countryside. The men reported the case to the disciples but they did not believe them. iii. Jesus then appeared to the eleven disciples as they sat at a table to eat. He scolded them for their unbelief and hardness of heart. Jesus then gave them the GREAT COMMISSION.
APPEARANCE IN JOHN’S GOSPEL (JOHN 21:1-14)
Jesus appeared to Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, James, John and two other disciples by the sea of Tiberia, but they did not know Him. Peter at this time told the rest of the disciple that he was going back to fishing. They all went with Him. When they went, they caught nothing that night. In the morning when they returned, Jesus came to them and asked if they caught any fish. They replied in the negative. He told them to cast the net to the other side of their boat. When they did, they caught a great number of fish. After this, Jesus made a coal fire, roasted some fish and called the disciples to have breakfast with Him. It was at this point that they understood that it was the resurrected Christ. APPEARANCE IN LUKE’S GOSPEL (LUKE 24:1-49) Jesus appeared to two disciples who were on their way to a nearby village called Emmaus. (About 11km from Jerusalem). Cleopas, one of them and another disciple were discussing the suffering, crucifixion and death of Jesus. They were both very sad about the incident. He approached them to enquire about the cause of their grief. In response, they asked Jesus if He was a stranger in Jerusalem for Him not to have heard about what happened to Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus comforted them by explaining that what happened was according to the scriptures which must be fulfilled concerning the Messiah. As they got close to the village, Jesus made move to go on but they constrained Him to abide with them. He consented and while they were having supper, Jesus broke the bread. Instantly, they recognized Him and He vanished from their sight. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE APPEARANCES OF THE RISEN CHRIST 1. To strengthen the faith of the disciples in Jesus. 2. To fulfill the prophecy of Jesus that He will be raised from the dead. 3. His risen confirmed that He is truly the Messiah and Saviour
THE GREAT COMMISSION (MATTHEW 28:18-20; MARK
16:15-18) The Great Commission was the last assignment and Instruction Jesus gave to His disciples before His ascension into heaven. The disciples went to Galilee in obedience to the message that was sent to them after His resurrection. When He appeared to them on the mountain, they worshipped Him. He then said to them: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me. Go therefore into the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing…teaching…and lo, I am with you always, to the close of age”. According to the Gospel of Mark, Jesus added a list of signs that will follow those who obey this final instruction, saying: “In my name, they will cast out demons, speak in New tongues, pick up serpents, drink poison and remain unhurt and also heal the sick”
THE ASCENSION OF JESUS
Ascension of Christ is the gradual departure of Christ physically from the earth to heaven in the presence of His disciples. Jesus met with His disciples again at Jerusalem. He led them as far as Bethany. He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While still blessing them, Jesus was parted from them and taken up into the clouds. The disciples were filled with great joy as they blessed God and went back to the Temple were they continually praised God.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION AND THE
ASCENSION OF JESUS 1. All Christians are to preach the gospel of salvation to mankind. 2. Jesus had finished His earthly work and so had to return to the Father in heaven fro where He had originally came from. 3. The way He was taken to heaven is the same way He will return to take His Saints with Him on the last day.
