Title: The Words of Contentment

Text: Luke 23:46

Introduction:

Ralph, 8, “When birds are ready to die they just fly to heaven.”

Kevin, 10, very courageous, “I’m not afraid to die because I’m a Boy Scout.”

Aaron, age 8, “The hospital is the place where people go on their way to heaven.”

Marsha, 9, “When you die, you don’t have to do homework in heaven unless your teacher is there too.”

Alan, age 7, “God doesn’t tell you when you are going to die because He wants it to be a big surprise.”

Luke 23:44-49

The Death of Jesus

44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,
45 while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, calling out
with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed
his last.47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this
man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what
had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who
had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

Four Characteristics of His Death should encourage us and take away any fear of death.

1. He died actually

First of all, He died actually. His death was not an illusion. He actually died. His death was a real death.

His story is not an epic or any of the myth that the other people telling us today.
There are evidences in the Scripture that He really died.

1. The testimony of the people- the soldier came to look at the bodies on the cross (John 19:33)
2. When Joseph and Nicodemus ask for the custody of Christ body after His death to buried Him.

The Lord Jesus died and He tasted death just like every person.

He died actually. When you stop to think that He died for us, that means that we do not have to be
afraid of death.

2. He died confidently.

He died confidently when He said “Father, into thy hands I commend my Spirit.”

But why He is confident?

a. The Father’s Presence

He died confidently because He had the Father’s presence. He said, “Father”. Three times on the cross,
Jesus addresses God: His first, fourth and last word. At the beginning, middle and at the end of his
ordeal, our Lord prayed to His Father.

The presence of His Father also reflects His relationship with the Father.

b. The Father’s Promise

He died confidently because he had the Father’s promise

Psalm 31:1-5

In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! Incline
your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! For you are
my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; you take me out of the
net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have
redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

The psalm we have read is a Messianic Psalm. He did not need to redeem but the words He utter is the
fulfillment of the OT and He claimed God’s Word and entrusted Himself to the Father.

Jesus lived in the Word of God.

The Father’s Promise is an assurance for Christ.

c. The Father’s Protection.

He died confidently because He had the Father’s protection. Kahit na Siya ay nakasama sa madaming
tao, naharap sa madaming tao, sakit at kahit ano pa man.

The Father’s Protection is a Security for Christ.

3. He died willingly.
In one sense He was killed. But in other sense, He was not killed, for He willingly laid down His life.

John 10:17-18

“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have
authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Our Lord died willingly.

No OT sacrifice ever died willingly. No lamb, goat or sheep ever willingly gave His life.
But Jesus willingly laid
down His life for us.

We want to be able to come to the end of life and surrender to God willingly, having finished the work
of God wants us to do.

4. He died victoriously.

Our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished the work that God gave Him to do, and when He gave up His Spirit,
several miracles took place. The veil of the temple tore from top to bottom, and God opened the way
into the Holy of Holies. Some graves were opened, and some of the saints were resurrected.

Jesus Christ proved Himself to be victorious over sin and death.

The earthquake reminds us the earthquake at Mount Sinai when God gave the Law and upon the death
of the Savior it signifies that the Law is fulfilled.

Jesus died victoriously, conqueror of sin, death and hell!

Conclusion:

The words and His death on the cross signifies

1. The fulfillment of the Law.

Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to
abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not
a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Luke 24:25-26 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets
have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things
concerning himself.
2. The uniqueness of our Savior.

3. The blessedness we have in Christ.

4. The eternal security we have in Christ.

5. The new life in Christ we have in Christ.- it involves our new condition, access and victorious life
because of Christ.
