What’s New
Directions: Read the sentences below and answer the questions that follow.
Note: Term defined (in bold) Class to which the term belongs (in italic)
An algorithm is a finite description of a finite number of steps required to accomplish
some well-defined tasks.
Carbohydrates are a food group including sugars, starches, and cellulose.
Computer Memory is one of the three basic components of a computer which stores
information for future use-both the data that will be operated on as well as the programs that
direct the operations to be performed.
Reservoir rock is the type of rock that has sufficient porosity and permeability to allow
gas and oil to accumulate and be produced in commercial quantities.
Influenza is an acute highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract, which occurs
sporadically or in epidemic and that lasts up to a month.
Definition can begin with a synonym, a brief phrase, or a formal sentence that
explains the term/field in its most basic form. The techniques you use will depend on
what is appropriate for audience and subject matter. These techniques are listed below:
Formal sentence definitions: their components are the term being defined, the class it belongs
to, and its distinguishing characteristics.

Take particular care when you write the reference to the class to which the term
belongs; it sets up a larger frame of reference or context. It gives readers something
familiar to associate the term with.
Be aware, however, that your formal sentence definition will likely contain
additional potentially unfamiliar terms. Somewhere in your extended definition,
you will need to explain them as well, possibly by using short definitions (explained
later in this section).

What I Have Learned
3. Why is it important that one should learn how to do the writing formal sentence definition?
DAY 3
What’s In
When you write an extended definition, you literally grab at any of the
writing resources or tools that will help you explain the term to your readers. This
means considering all the various sources of information that can help define the
term adequately (for example, description, process narration, causal discussion,
and classification). The key to writing a good extended definition is to choose the
sources of definition to help readers understand the term being defined.
Outline of a report that uses extended definition. This view shows how different sources of
definition can be used to write an extended definition.
Another extended definition. This one uses additional definitions, description (demographics),
process.
As mentioned earlier, you will find that in writing an extended definition, you must
define other terms as well. Typically, short definitions—a sentence, clause, or
phrase in length—will suffice.
Extended definitions often need additional definitions. These can be short, phrase-
length definitions.
Directions: With the discussions above, paraphrase the sentences applying the lessons
on adding short definitions to clearly understand the thought of the
paragraph. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Measles virus will infect monkeys easily and chick embryos with difficulty. In
tissue cultures, the virus may produce giant multi mutated cells and nuclear
hydrophilic inclusion bodies. The virus has not been shown to have the receptor—
destroying enzyme associated with other cytomegalovirus. Measles, canine
distemper, and bovine rinderpest viruses are onto genetically related.

3. What is the significance of learning the extended definition in the world of academic writing?
DAY 4
Directions: Given the article below, compose an expanded definition with the words
being highlighted. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. (10
points each).
Most people who are infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate
respiratory illnesses and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those
with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the
COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from
infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your
face.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the
nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it is important that you also practice
respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
