What is an extended definition?

An extended definition is a one or more paragraphs that attempt to explain a

complex term. Some terms may be so important in your report, there may be so much
confusion about them, or they may be so difficult to understand that an extended
discussion is vital for the success of your report.

Techniques of Extended Definition

Definition can begin with a synonym, a brief phrase, or a formal sentence that
explains the term/field in its most basic form. The techniques you use will depend on
what is appropriate for audience and subject matter. These techniques are listed below:

1. Etymology – explaining origin of the word itself

2. History – if relevant, discussing the history of the term/its use/controversies
associated with it
3. Cause and Effect – discussing how the situation came about and what effects it may
have
4. Description – listing and defining the component parts
5. Principles of Operation – discussing how topic in question functions, including any
special materials or conditions required
6. Classification - showing how the topic fits into a larger category
7. Contrast/Negation – showing how the topic differs from others in the same class
8. Comparison – showing how the topic is like others in the class
9. Analogy – explaining by comparing two dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar
to the audience

Writing Formal Sentence Definitions

One of the first things to do when you write an extended definition is to

compose the formal sentence definition of the term you are writing about. It
establishes the focus for the rest of the discussion. It is "formal" because it uses a
certain form. Here are several examples:

Formal sentence definitions: their components are the term being defined, the class it belongs
to, and its distinguishing characteristics.

Note: Term defined (in bold) Class to which the term belongs (in italic)

own understanding the term you are defining.

Be aware, however, that your formal sentence definition will likely contain
additional potentially unfamiliar terms. Somewhere in your extended definition,
you will need to explain them as well, possibly by using short definitions (explained
later in this section).

sources of definition to help readers understand the term being defined.

or both?

Negatives Would explaining what the term is not, what it

does not refer to help?

Adding Short Definitions

As mentioned earlier, you will find that in writing an extended definition, you must
define other terms as well. Typically, short definitions—a sentence, clause, or
phrase in length—will suffice.

Extended definitions often need additional definitions. These can be short, phrase-
length definitions.

Measles is an acute, highly infectious disease, with cough, fever, and

corpuscular rash. It has worldwide endemic. The infective particle is an RNA Virus
about 100-150 nanometer in diameter, measured by ultra-filtration, but the active
core is only about 65 nm as measured by inactivation after electron irradiation.
Negative staining in the electron microscope shows the virus to have the helical
structure of a cytomegalovirus with the helix being 18 nm in diameter.

Measles virus will infect monkeys easily and chick embryos with difficulty. In
tissue cultures, the virus may produce giant multi mutated cells and nuclear
hydrophilic inclusion bodies. The virus has not been shown to have the receptor—
destroying enzyme associated with other cytomegalovirus. Measles, canine
distemper, and bovine rinderpest viruses are onto genetically related.

Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered

corona virus.

Most people who are infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate
respiratory illnesses and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those
with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the
COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from
infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your
face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the
nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it is important that you also practice
respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
