Discussion Questions for The Matrix

1. What were your initial reactions to the movie? Did you enjoy the movie? Why or
why not? I thought the movie was pretty good. I have never seen anything like
this so this is unbelievable to me.

2. What were the parts of the movie that stood out for you? What impact did they
have on you? When Cypher betrayed the team to the agents and half of the team
was gone just like that. I felt like all of those characters died too quickly and did
not do anything in the story.

3. Did you find the plot believable? Why or why not? I find the plot believable, at
first I thought it was real because Neo keeps waking up from a dream world.

4. What is The Matrix? Why does it exist?-The Matrix was a massive simulated
virtual reality construct of the world as it was around the turn of the 20th and 21st
centuries, created by artificial intelligences to keep the minds of the human race
under control while they served as organic POWs.

5. Why did Morpheus and his followers consider The Matrix evil? What analogies
and similarities can you find to other situations or stories? Be sure to consider the
roles of technology in today’s world (i.e. the Internet, bank cards, satellites, etc.).
The matrix was an artificial society where there were super humans such as the
agents and Morpheus's crew. They considered it a shield from fate. In today's
world A.I is always advancing and we will never know when they might take over.
The internet knows what kind of ads intrigue you, and bank cards are digitally
always with you.

6. The movie raises questions about reality. Morpheus states that, “reality is merely
electrical signals interpreted by the brain. Your mind makes it real.” Is it possible
for people to have different views of reality? What scenes in the movie made you
wonder what was real and unreal? Discuss how Morpheus’ definition of reality
compares with the definition of perception. Anyone can have a view of reality but
some are very different from others. When you're in the matrix it's not real reality
but the real world it shows what's yet to come.

7. Neo expressed the feeling that he didn’t believe in fate because he didn’t like the
idea that he was not in charge of his life. How do you feel about this statement?
Was Neo's life determined by fate? Are our lives fate-determined? Did the
Oracle’s prophecies support or contradict the idea of fate? Defend your answer.
You can't really tell what your fate is because once it happens it's over and you
can't predict it. The prophecies supported fate because neos’ fate was to be the
one and he became that.

8. Another major issue raised in the movie is the notion of truth. Morpheus said,
“The Matrix is the world pulled over your eyes to prevent you from seeing the
truth.” To what was Morpheus referring? The future was very dark and in ruins so
the matrix was so you would not have to see the world's fate. But by the time that
humans noticed it was too late because they were being kept for energy.

9. Later Morpheus says, “All I’m offering is the truth.” But wasn’t he actually offering
Neo the truth from Morpheus’ point of view? How might the supporters of The
Matrix view the truth? It was Trinity and her prophecy, provided by The Oracle.
Morpheus had already spoken to Trinity about it, that she would fall in love with
The One.

10. What was wrong with living in the world created by The Matrix? Weren’t people
relatively satisfied? People are essentially living in a simulation that is fed into
the brains of humans in a fetal or cocoon-like state. The problem with living in the
Matrix is that it is not real: only illusion.

11. In the film Neo was told that people could not accept total happiness; that people
expected a certain amount of misery and suffering. Do you believe this to be
true? Why or why not? Give examples. In your life it is impossible to live without
sadness by a family member dying or you just got cheated on by your partner.
But everyone has a certain misery that they can handle.

12. The movie seems to make a number of religious references – particularly to

Christianity. Consider the following: it shows that neo is jesus trinity is the father
the son and the holy spirit. The Matrix film is an allegory for the Christian faith
and that Neo is a modern-day Jesus, morpheus is god and trinity is the holy
spirit.

13. Neo was referred to as “The One.” Was he a Christ-figure? Why or why
not? What are some of the parallels? He was a christ figure because he
would be the one to see the matrix code and to bring an end to the agents.

14. Trinity refers to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. What did the
character Trinity represent in the film? The name Trinity suggests the holy
trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which represents the divine nature
of God. In the Matrix films, Morpheus, Neo, and Trinity form their own trinity,
as do Agents Smith, Brown, and Jones.

15. Could the Oracle represent God? The Oracle is, according to the Architect,
the “mother” of the Matrix. She is an intuitive program originally designed to
study the human psyche, and she proposed a solution: creating a simulated
reality that would offer humanity a choice to mistrust the very nature of that
reality, if only on an unconscious level.
16. Who might Morpheus represent? Morpheus represents the best kind of
leader and teacher: He teaches Neo what he knows and guides him to the
right path, then steps aside and lets Neo proceed on his own. Morpheus
does not seek glory, and his selflessness makes him heroic in his own way.

17. Who might the Agents represent? The agents could be the government
trying to stop you from finding out the truth about what is really going on
with the world.

18. At the end of the movie Neo challenges The Matrix by accusing it of being afraid
of change. Neo goes on to say that he envisions a world without The Matrix,
without rules and controls, without boundaries or borders, where anything is
possible. What would a world without rules and boundaries look like? Is this
necessarily a positive thing? Would you want to live in such a world? Why or why
not? Would such a world necessarily mean that anything was possible for
everyone, or just for some? It would be utter chaos because there would be
people who would become superheroes and villains. It is not a positive thing. I
am happy with the world we have today because there are laws and rules.

19. What is The Matrix? a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped
inside a simulated reality, the Matrix, which intelligent machines have created to
distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source.?

20. What does it represent?

The Matrix represents a system of control that operates completely in the mind. As a
complex, machine-driven program, it appropriates any personal, political, or ideological
leanings and renders them wholly false.
