II. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 10
(1). The rust-coloured, tiled mansion stood majestic in isolation. It was a two storeyed,
palatial bungalow with spacious rooms, high ceilings, beautifully painted walls and
aesthetically appealing architecture, grill windows and ornamental doors. A Hindu undivided
family consisting of around twenty-five members had lived there for three decades. The walls of
the building had echoed with the laughter of the children and the entire structure had been mute
spectator to the gaiety and sorrow, the victories and defeats of its adult members.
(2) But whither have they gone? Why have they fled this home? What has inexorably forced them
to hunt for a haven yonder?
(3) Obviously it was the collapse of a strong, uniting thread that had held them together. The
stocky, but tough old man who had headed this group passed away a year ago. And
disintegration set in, as his dear sons were torn asunder by a multitude of passion that they
could not surmount.
(4) The search began, therefore for separate dwelling for each of the sons. Nuclear family was
preferred to the old joint family system.
(5) However the old building continued to haunt them like a passion. Again and again his
children and grandchildren would trek long distances to have a glimpse of the building they had
once lived in and called their own. The majestic edifice would fill them with nostalgia and tears
would well in their eyes at the thought of their dear old parent who had once ruled there with a
loving but firm hand.

Bangalore.
2. Write a letter to your friend telling him/her about your paramedical course.
II. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 10
(1). It so happened that a polyglot visited the court of Sri Krishnadevaraya. He told the king
that he could read, write and speak impeccably in 18 languages. He challenged the court and asked
them to identify is mother tongue.
(2) Scholars in various languages were summoned and were asked to hold a dialogue with the
guest. Each one of them had a personal interview with the said scholar. They found for
themselves that the multi linguist was claiming nothing but the truth. Yet, the challenge was a
matter of prestige to the reigning king. He turned to his intelligence court jester Tenali Rama to
find a solution.
(3) Accordingly, Tenali Rama waited for the scholar to retire for the night. When the
polyglot was in deep slumber. Tenali Rama threw some cold water over him. Almost
immediately the shocked sleeping man awoke and shouter,"Evvera Vadu" Tenali Rama
sneaked away from the scene only to tell the king that the mother tongue of the scholar
happened to be Telugu.
(4) This little story is a pointer to the fact that no matter how many languages we might
learn and master in life, our mother tongue stands supreme and foremost for it is embedded in our
psyche ever since the day we are born.
(5) We learn our mother tongue from our parents and immediate family and neighbors in the
aural of Shravana mode. We are never sensitized to any aspect to grammar when we learn the
language. We grasp aspects of syntax, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation merely by being
exposed to it day after day throughout the formative years of our life.
(6) Despite all this, most urban children have lost sight of their mother tongues. Mixed
marriages, nuclear families, the need to study in school of different medium due to relocation of
families from their native places can be identified as root cause of this trend.
(7) India is a country of several such languages, most of which are still alive. We can
interpret our glorious literature, tradition, culture arts and architecture better because they
share an invisible link with the associated language. A little effort and utilization of modem
technology and media coupled with human effort can keep the link to languages alive and pass
them on to posterity.
(A) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, answer the following questions:
(3) What was the challenge posed by the polyglot to the scholars of Krishnadevaraya? (1)
(4) Who did the king ask to find solution to the challenge of the scholar? (1)

(1). There was once a king of Scotland whose name was Robert Bruce. He needed to be both
brave and wise, for the times in which he lived were wild and rude. The king of England was at
war with him, and led a great army into Scotland to drive him out of the land. Battle after battle
had been fought. Six times had Bruce led his brave little army against foes and six times had
his men beaten and driven into fight. At last his army was scattered and he was forced to hide
himself in the woods and in lonely places among the mountains.
(2) One rainy day, Bruce lay on the ground under a rude shed, listening to the patter of the
drops on the roof above him. He was tired and sick at heart and ready to give up all hope. It
seemed to him that there was no use for him to try to do anything more.
(3) As he laid thinking, he saw a spider over his head, making ready to weave her web. He
watched her as she toiled slowly and with great care. Six times she tried to throw her frail
thread from one beam to another and six times it fell short "poor thing!" said Bruce. 'You too,
know what it is to fail'.
(4) But the spider did not lose hope with the sixth failure. With still more care, she made
ready to try for the seventh time. Bruce almost forgot his own troubles as he watched her
swing herself out upon the slender line. Would she fail again? No! the thread was carried
safely to the beam and fastened there.
(5) I too will try a seventh time! cried Bruce.
(6) He arose and called his men together. He told them of his plans and sent out with
messages of cheer to his disheartened people. Soon there was an army of brave Scotchmen
around him. Another battle was fought and king of England was glad to go back into his own
country.

(1) The Bet" is a short story written by Anton Chekov, He is a Russian short story writer and

(2) The banker had given a party. In the party, there were people from different walks of life.
While they were talking about capital punishment, many guests disapproved of the death
penalty. They opined that death penalty ought to be replaced by imprisonment of life. But the
banker said that imprisonment of life is no better than death penalty. The only difference is the
death penalty kills a man at once whereas imprisonment kills the man slowly. The young lawyer
said that he would prefer life imprisonment to death sentence, because, to live anyhow is better than
not at all.
(3) The banker challenged the young lawyer and said that he would bet two millions if the
young man could spend 5 years in solitary confinement. The young man said that instead of 5 years
he would spend 15 years in solitary confinement.
(4) Two millions was nothing to the banker. He was very confident that the young man
would not stay in the confinement for more than 4 or 5 years, and so entered into an
agreement with the young man. According to the agreement except talking to other humans, the
young would be provided with whatever he needs in his solitary confinement and the
slightest attempt on the part of the young man to violate the conditions, if any two minutes
before the end, would release the banker from the obligation to pay him two millions.

(1). When you see geese heading for the winter, flying along in a 'V' formation, you might
consider that science has discovered about why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its
wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in the 'V' formation the
whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
(2) People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are
going more quickly and easily, because they are travelling on the thrust of one another. When
goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go alone and
quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If
we have as much sense as a goose we will stay in formation with those people who are headed
the same way we are.
(3) When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wind and another goose flies point. It is
sensible take turns during demanding fobs, whetherwith people or with geese flying south.
(4) Geese honk from behind to encourage those up to keep their speed. Finally and this is
important when a goose gets sick or is wounded by guns shot and fall out of formation, two other
geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lead help and protection. They stay until it is
able to fly or until it dies and only then they launch out on their own, or with another
formation to catch up with their group. If we too have the same sense as of a goose. We too will
stand by each other with integrity and make this earth a better place to live.

(1) The art of academic writing is not easy to master. It is a formal skill, which requires
precision and accuracy, and is perfected by continuous and dedicated practice. Academic
writing is the skillful exposition and explanation of an argument, which the writer has
carefully researched and developed over a sustained period of time. It is a time-consuming
activity and demands patience and perseverance. But the joy of reading and sharing with
others, one's succinctly composed piece of argument, is incomparable
(2) Before beginning to write, the writer must ask himself a few questions — Why am I
writing? What is it that I intend to share with others? What purpose will my writing serve? Have
I read enough about the topic or theme about which I am going to write? If one is hesitant to
answer even one of the aforementioned questions, one better not write at all! Because
academic writing is a serious activity — it makes one part of a shared community of readers and
writers who wish to disseminate and learn from well-argued pieces of writing.
(3) The structure of an argumentative essay should take the form of — Introduction (which
should be around ten percent of the entire essay), Body (it should constitute eighty percent of
the piece) and the Conclusion (again, ten per cent of the essay). The introduction should
function as the hook which draws the reader in and holds his attention, the body should
include cogent and coherently linked paragraphs and the conclusion should re-state the
argument and offer a substantial ending to the piece.

II. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 10
(1) The issue of road rage requires serious attention. Day by day, it is becoming a great
concern. Call it the negligence of the government or the rashness of the drivers, the
underlying fact is that at the end of the day, the common man is the one who suffers the most. The
commoner driving a two-wheeler who is hit by a speeding SUV, even though the former was
following the traffic rules, has nowhere to go in order to seek redressal for his grievances or his
injury. A recent case in point is the accident caused by the speeding luxury car owned by
HemaMalini. A family of four driving a modest Alto was hit by the over speeding car driven
by the actress's driver. It resulted in the death of the youngest child of the family and several
injuries to the other family members. To add insult to injury, Malini posted negative comments
on a famous social networking website.
(2) Part of the problem lies with the attitude and mentality of the driver behind the
steering wheel. The car is a personal vehicle and one possesses the freedom to drive it
independently and at one's own will. But one must understand that the road on which one
drives is open to the public. This blurring of the dichotomy between the public and the
private leads to reckless behavior on the roads. Respect for the elderly and pedestrians, so
common in countries abroad, is a thing of rarity to be found in our land. A little consideration to
road rules and adoption of simple safety measures such as fastening of the seat belt can go a long
way in reducing this menace.

(1). Today's world can truly be called a "society of the spectacle", a phrase that the French
sociologist and thinker Guy de Bord used decades earlier. Every act of lived experience has
today become a spectacle. It would be a little incorrect to say that this craze for spectacle izing
everything that occurs around us is a recent phenomenon. If one had watched "The Pirates of
The Caribbean" movies, one would realize that even in the late eighteenth century, executions
were public events - a large portion of the populace would gather around the site of the hanging
in the city square in order to see justice being meted out in front of their very own eyes. It was
also a form of popular entertainment. It was a sort of a collective public blood-letting.
(2) The spectacle that the contemporary society has become is an overwhelming
experience. One enters into a restaurant, orders an exotic dish — but the proof of having eaten it
doesn't exist until tons of photographs are clicked from varied angles and shared on social
networking sites, one goes for a holiday to a calm and serene location, but is all the while busy
telling the world about it. It as if one has to document every moment of one's existence. When
does one live that moment then? Perhaps it is in the documentation that one survives these days!

(1) India is a secular, democratic nation. This implies that every religion is treated equally and
at par with every other religion. No religion is accorded any preferential treatment of any kind.
All citizens are also free to practice, preach or profess any religion of their choosing. The state
does not have a unified or homogeneous religious following
(2) This unique characteristic of India ensures its unity in diversity. India has been the
birthplace of several religions and is the land where all these religions - such as Hinduism,
Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism and so on exist simultaneously,
peacefully and harmoniously
(3) But, some anti-social elements have interpreted the sanctity of religions in a twisted
way. No religion preaches violence or rioting. All the religions are but various ways to reach the
Supreme Being, they are paths which lead to the ultimate truth and salvation, though we refer to
the destination by various names such as Jesus, Krishna, Buddha. Allah and so on. It is important
to realize that in order to ensure a peaceful mosaic of cultural distinctness, the path of
non-violence or ahimsa, as given by the Father of the nation, must be followed unwaveringly.
(4) God created man in his own image. Hence, it follows naturally that there is some
divinity within all human beings. Thus, to kill and murder in the name of religion is
blasphemy. Only once the religious fanatics understand this, will there be perpetual peace in the
land.
