Lawson Perdue Lesson 1

Lesson 1 – The Scriptures Inspired

II Timothy 3:14-17 – “But continue in the things which you have learned
and been assured of, knowing of whom you’ve learned them. And that from a
child you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise
unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good works.”

Reproof – elegchos (Greek) – a proof, to prove, tested, conviction

I. Introduction

A. Holy Scriptures:

1. Make us wise unto salvation

2. Lead us to faith in Christ

3. Are given by the inspiration of God

4. Are profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and

instruction in righteousness

II. The Bible is the Inspired Word of God

A. God-breathed – God inspired men, and they recorded what He

desired.

1. II Peter 1:16-21

B. God did not personally say everything in the Bible, but He had it
recorded so that we could learn from it.

Lawson Perdue Lesson 1

1. Job 1:21 – “And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s

womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and
the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the
Lord.”

a. From the context, we know that the Lord was not

the one taking away from Job.

b. From other scriptures, we know that the Lord was

not the one taking away from Job. (John 10:10;
James 1:17)

c. However, we can learn from Job’s life: what he did

right and what he did wrong.

III. Reasons Why We Believe the Scriptures to Be the Infallible

Word of God

A. Jesus sanctioned the scriptures.

1. John 5:39

2. Matthew 5:18

3. Matthew 24:35

4. John 17:17

B. The scriptures themselves – The Bible reveals that it is the

product of one Master Mind: sixty-six books, written by about
forty different authors, living in different places, with different
lifestyles, during a time period of about 1600 years. Yet, each
complete and complement one another without contradiction.

C. History – The history of the Bible is impeccable.

D. Science – Science proves the Bible to be correct.

the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things and

to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds
from the Father, He shall testify of me.”

said I, that He shall take of mine, and shall show it to you.”

E. Matthew 3:16-17 – “And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up

straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened
unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove,
and lighting upon Him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This
is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Lesson 3 – The Fall and Salvation of Man

Ephesians 2:1-5, 8 – “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in

trespasses and sins; wherein in time past you walked according to the course
of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that
now works in the children of disobedience: among whom also we had all our
conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the
flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved

Lesson 6 – Water Baptism

Acts 2:38 – “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.”

Hebrews 6:1-2 – “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ,

let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance
from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms
(plural), and of laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of
eternal judgment.”

I. Introduction

A. There are three baptisms of believers.

1. Repentance and faith have to do with the first baptism:

being baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. (I
Corinthians 12:13)

a. This first baptism is speaking of salvation. We are

being baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy
Spirit.

2. Being baptized in Acts 2:38 is speaking of water baptism.

We are being baptized in water by another believer.

a. This has to do with identification. We identify with

Christ’s death and resurrection. We are dead to sin,
and we live to God.

23 REV 4.4.2018
Basic Bible Doctrines
Lawson Perdue Lesson 6

3. Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost is speaking of the

baptism in the Holy Ghost. In the book of Acts, when they
were baptized in the Holy Ghost, they spoke in tongues.

a. The believer is being baptized in the Holy Ghost by

the Lord Jesus Christ. This makes us better able to
proclaim the message of Christ. (Acts 1:8)

B. To recognize the difference in these baptisms in the scriptures,

ask yourself, “Who is doing the baptizing, and what are we being
baptized into?”

II. Who Is to Be Baptized?

A. Believers

1. Mark 16:15-16 – “He that believeth and is baptized shall

be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned.”

a. What is the emphasis on?

B. Disciples

in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost.”

C. Acts 8:35-38

2. Colossians 2:12-14

B. Christ’s example to us:

1. Matthew 3:13-17 – Christ identified with humanity in His

Lesson 7 – The Return of Jesus Christ for His Church

John 14:1-3 – “Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe

place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I
am, there you may be also.”

I. Introduction

Lesson 8 – Heaven and Hell

Revelation 21:1-8 – “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first
heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of
heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great
voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He
will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God Himself shall be
with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their
eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither
shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And He
that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto
me, ‘Write: for these words are true and faithful.’ And He said unto me, ‘It is
done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him
that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcomes
shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the
fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part
in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
