Spots of Cultural interests

One temple and two mosques are the places of cultural

interest in the area.

The facades and heights of these structures are much

different from the buildings around.

The pedestrian movements are effected by the people

from the mosques after the prayer.

Street corners
 Curved street corners provide increased pedestrian space
 Opportunity for social interaction by placing a little furniture
 They also provide easier movement of the traffic and shorter crossing distances
for pedestrians.
 In some locations, street corner amenities can be associated with small food plazas to
enhance the public landscape and gatherings.
 For example: The “Dinshaws” ice cream parlour corner in front of the SBI main branch
Sidewalks
 Sidewalks function as integral components
of pedestrian-friendly street systems where
pedestrians can experience safety,
comfort, accessibility and efficient mobility.
 Sidewalks also function as outdoor rooms and
gathering places and help define community
character in the area

Trees vegetation
Landscape strips are an effective treatment between sidewalks and streets to create a buffer
from moving vehicles and street noise, it help pedestrians feel more comfortable walking
along the street.
Planters help define street edges and pedestrian spaces.
Benches and seating areas can be integrated into raised planters if needed.
Seating
 Waiting and resting areas along walkways provide welcome relief to pedestrians, act as a
place to sit together, interact and to observe.
 Placing benches in the utility zone helps avoid conflicts and keep zones clear.

Trash Garbage bins
 Strategically located garbage receptacles and cigarette
ash cans help keeps areas in the new market clean
and attractive if well maintained
 Garbage bins are conveniently located for pedestrian
traffic near benches, bus stops, and other activity nodes,
accessible for trash collection and maintenance.
 Covered tops and sealed bottoms should be included to
keep contents dry and pests out.

town, the other one at the mosque.

 Pedestrian safety,
 Visibility
 Comfort.

Transition of spaces and adaptability

We can find a number of activities which happen at a place in the day time and the same
place is used for a different activity in the evening time.

B.R.T.S. corridor and changes
BRTS corridor was intended for the free flow of traffic and to ensure that buses are
not delayed by mixed traffic congestion.
Introduction of BRTS corridor has changed the face of New market and a few activities
around it. For example the road side vendors are not allowed now in the premises
Lesson Learnt
 Improving environmental quality by improving air quality, reduce heat island effects, improve
water quality, and reduce light pollution is important to create a better quality of life.
 Furniture’s used in the street should be even provided in the areas of high pedestrian
mobility.
 Streetscape elements are important for functional and aesthetic purposes in order to
provide amenity and utility to pedestrians and other street users.
 Small trees or planters can be placed in the open areas for better quality of air in the area.
 Adaptation of a few areas for some activities is an important feature which determines
the fabric of a place.
 High pedestrian traffic and no pedestrian facilities have resulted in pedestrian vehicle
conflict due to which safety of pedestrians is at stake
