Module 3
ACTIVITIES: Complete the required undertakings. Refer to the attachment.
Analysis. Let’s analyze the song. (Page 36,)

1. According to the song, what are connected?

The head bone is linked to your neck bone. The neck bone is connected to your shoulder bone. Shoulder
bone is connected to your back bone. Back bone is connected to your hip bone. Hip bone is connected to
your thigh bone. Thigh bone is connected to your knee bone. Knee bone is connected to your leg bone. Leg
bone is connected to your ankle bone. Ankle bone is connected to your heel bone. Heel bone is connected
to your foot bone. Foot bone is connected to your toe bone.

2. What do you expect if these bones are connected? Does malfunctioning of one bone affect the other
bone?

If these bones are connected, it functions very well and we don’t have to worry about it. But if one bone
malfunctions, I guess that it affects the other bones. Why? Because the other bones that are connected to
the bones that are malfunctioning, maybe they may not process the action that you need.

3. In activity #2 was the meaning that you gave to your symbol the same with the meaning that the
receiver gave? If not, how did this affect you? Do you feel you were understood?

I guess it depends upon the situation because sometimes the message that you want to convey to the
receiver is not always the same or they sometimes misunderstood because Conveying a message to other
people clearly might sound simple, but it's a process that is often fraught with error. This can result in
confusion, frustration, wasted effort, and missed opportunities. Communication breaks down, causing
collaboration and progress to become impossible.

Application. Let’s apply. (Page 41)

1. Cite how schools at present are working on the realization of these 4 purposes as cited by the
functionalists?

The first basic purpose of schools is intellectual purposes, it helps in the acquisition of cognitive skills and inquiry
skills of students. Meaning students can know how to think on their own. Having this ability is essentials in
schools, it promotes those to become rational thinkers. It is the development of reason, through intellectual
pursuit, leading to an individual enlightenment. Teaching with intellectual purpose should be like opening a can
of worms in your student’s minds. Letting the questions and ideas squirm, change and challenge. It is one of the
major purposes of education which is the cognitive and intellectual purpose. The cognitive and intellectual
purpose is important because it focuses on improving the higher-order thinking skills and knowledge of the
student so that they can be literate and knowledgeable thinkers. Second, the political purpose plays an important
role in educating future citizens in promoting patriotism, assimilation of immigrants, ensure order, public civility,
and conformity to laws. School systems came upon this with the help of the teachers and it thought schools
could help people learn how to govern themselves wisely and justly in other words, this is helping the student
to become more independent and have the opportunity to engage and interact with others. The educational
system is viewed as a politicizing agent of the society. The norms and values thus transmitted are compared with
those deemed necessary for a stable democratic political system. Education develops civil skills, and this is
valuable for the individual to allow them for meaningful participation in civil society and political life and for
society. Third is the economic purpose where believes that schools are beneficial to students to get ahead in life
economically. It helps prepares the students for later work roles, select and train the labor force needed by the
society. Meaning, they have to stay in school to gain the knowledge and skills for their future career. Education
in every sense is one of the fundamental factors of development. No country can achieve sustainable economic
development without substantial investments in human capital. Education enriches and leads to broad social
benefits to individuals in the society. Education raises people’s productivity and creativity that promotes
entrepreneurship and technological advances. Fourth, social purposes describes society as stable and describes
all of the various mechanisms that maintain social stability. Functionalism argues that the social structure is
responsible for all stability and instability, and that that the social structure is continuously attempting to
maintain social equilibrium among all the components of society. According to functionalists, the socialization
process is coercive, forcing us to accept the values and norms of society. The values and norms of society are
agreed upon by all members of society because there is a “social contract” in effect which protects us from one
another and keeps society stable and balanced. People follow and accept the values and norms of society in
order to maintain their own safety as well as maintaining social order.

Let’s Check for Understanding. (Page 42)

Which social science theory is referred to?

1. The overall health of society depends upon the healthy functioning of its institutions.

- The Structural-Functional

2. Meanings that individuals give to symbols change over time

- Symbolic Interactionist Theory

3. Faulty communication can result from differences in the perception of the same events and symbols.

- Conflict Theory

4. Schools teach humanitarian attitude, altruism, democracy, civil rights, and other positive aspects of
society to preserve society and social order.

- Functionalist Theory

5. When one institution fails to function another institution ought to come in to perform the function for
the stability of society.

- Functionalist Theory

6. A new society comes as a result of the resolution of clash between the powers that be and the workers.

- Conflict Theory

7. Two opposing sides are welcome. This paves the way to change.

- Conflict Theory

8. When one institution fails to perform its function, the other institution showed come in for the
preservation of society.

- Functionalism Theory

9. One weakness of this theory is this is focused on small interactions.

- Symbolic-interactionist Theory

10. Differences in meaning of symbols for both sender and receiver result to misunderstanding.

- Symbolic-interactionist Theory

Let’ Reflect. (Page 43)

1. Based on the lesson on symbolic-interactionist theory and the movie, The Little Prince, what does this
quote mean: “Words are a source of misunderstanding.” Any personal message? Write it down.

I extremely agree with the quote that words are a source of misunderstanding. If you delivered your opinions
in words only without any feelings or tone or gestures, it really can cause misunderstanding because every
human being has a different perception or mode of receiving or encoding the message. That's why it is really
important that we deliver or tell our opinions, ideas, and thoughts to others clearly, precisely, in proper
words, and with the right tone of voice and feelings so that they will understand the point of our message.
That’s why words can become a source of misunderstanding that may result in conflicts.

1. Research on more school practices based on the functionalist theory, conflict theory and symbolic
interaction theory. Write them on a whole sheet of paper to be passed in class.

The functionalist theory focuses on the ways that universal education serves the needs of society. Functionalists
first see education in its manifest role: conveying basic knowledge and skills to the next
generation. Durkheim (the founder of functionalist theory) identified the latent role of education as one of
socializing people into society's mainstream. This “moral education,” as he called it, helped form a more‐cohesive
social structure by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, which echoes the historical concern of
“Americanizing” immigrants. Functionalists point to other latent roles of education such as transmission of core
values and social control. The core values in American education reflect those characteristics that support the
political and economic systems that originally fueled education. Therefore, children in America receive rewards
for following schedules, following directions, meeting deadlines, and obeying authority. Conflict theory sees the
purpose of education as maintaining social inequality and preserving the power of those who dominate society.
Conflict theorists examine the same functions of education as functionalists. Functionalists see education as a
beneficial contribution to an ordered society; however, conflict theorists see the educational system as
perpetuating the status quo by dulling the lower classes into being obedient workers. Both functionalists and
conflict theorists agree that the educational system practices sorting, but they disagree about how it enacts that
sorting. Functionalists claim that schools sort based upon merit; conflict theorists argue that schools sort along
distinct class and ethnic lines. According to conflict theorists, schools train those in the working classes to accept
their position as a lower‐class member of society. Conflict theorists call this role of education the “hidden
curriculum.” Symbolic interactionists limit their analysis of education to what they directly observe happening in
the classroom. They focus on how teacher expectations influence student performance, perceptions, and
attitudes. Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson conducted the landmark study for this approach in 1968. First,
they examined a group of students with standard IQ tests. The researchers then identified a number of students
who they said would likely show a sharp increase in abilities over the coming year. They informed the teachers
of the results, and asked them to watch and see if this increase did occur. When the researchers repeated the
IQ tests at the end of the year, the students identified by the researchers did indeed show higher IQ scores. The
significance of this study lies in the fact that the researchers had randomly selected a number of average
students. The researchers found that when the teachers expected a particular performance or growth, it
occurred.
