1 After graduation, you are employed in a local construction laboratory as an Assistant


Concrete Engineer. Concrete is the most commonly used construction material for
high-rise buildings. You are required to analyze the properties of concrete for a new
project.

(a) Explain the four chief components in Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with their
functions. (10 marks)

(b) In the process of concrete mixing, admixtures are sometimes added to modify the
properties of concrete. You are required to analyze the functions and applications
on using the following admixtures: -

(i) Water-reducing agent (5 marks)


(ii) Air-entraining agent (5 marks)

(c) An objective of sieve analysis is to analyze the size of aggregates using in the
concrete. Discuss the grading of aggregates in concrete design. (5 marks)

2 (a) In a laboratory, a technician carried out a tensile test for a steel specimen of length
500 mm. The specimen is subjected to a stress of 350 ~ l r n mand ~ the Young's
modulus of steel is 205,000 ~1rn1-n~.

(9 Calculate the strain of the specimen. (4 marks)

(ii) Calculate the extension of the specimen.


(4 marks)

(iii) Sketch and label the typical Stress-Strain Curve for a steel
specimen in a tensile test.

(b) Briefly describe the following terms of material properties:-

(9 Fatigue (3 marks)

(ii) Ductility; and (3 marks)

(iii) Elasticity (3 rgrks)

3 (a) Plastic, the hottest of the primary construction materials available to the
building industry, is the most demand today. Please describe Four (4) types
of plastic application with their characteristic for construction purpose.
(8 marks)

(b) Please briefly describe the cause and effect of two defective road pavements to
be awareness on road construction. (17 marks)

4 (a) Timber is a common material for building construction and their durability
and strength can be increased by seasoning, you, as a material specialist, are
required to analyze the seasoning methods.

(i) Explain the objective of reasoning. (2 marks)


(ii) Briefly describe the Air Seasoning and Kiln Seasoning processes of
timber treatment. (13 marks)

(b) As a Building Engineer, you want to use carbon steel as structural frame for a
50-storey hotel building. You are required to Five (5) methods to protect
the carbon steel from corrosion. (10 marks)

5. (a) As a technical engineer in a design firm,you are asked to proved technical


specification of a spiral glass staircase in a 2-storey apartment. Risers,
treads and railing are all made of glass and please specie the type of glass in
each category with pros and cons of your choice.

(i) Curved glass railing; (5 marks)


(ii) Glass stair tread; (4 marks)
(iii)Glass stair risers with steel backing plate. (5 marks)

(b) Propose a quality control method to minimize spontaneous breakage of


tempered glass together with method statement. (7 marks)

(c) Prepare a method statement for production of tempered glass. (4 marks)
