Sand/Multimedia Filter
Multimedia filter also called as mechanical filter is composed of deep-bed system with
multi layers of media in the tank. The major media to be applied in the system of sand and
anthracite. The lightest and coarsest material is located at the top layer of bed for the removal
of the largest suspended particles, while the heaviest and finest one is located at the bottom
layer of bed to remove smaller one present in the source water.
The sand usually acts as a form of chemical treatment that, when in contact with solu-
ble iron in water, reduced the iron from the soluble form to an insoluble form that will precipi-
tate out of solution. The anthracite then can filter both the precipitated iron out of the solution
as well as other entrained particles that have entered the water source. The combination of
anthracite and sand together can remove a majority of suspended particles greater than 10
microns in size. After treatment, the SDI (Silt Density Index) is reduced and the turbidity reaches
less than 3 from 20. The systems require backwashing to remove the accumulated contamina-
tion of suspended particles and rinsed by down flow clean filtered water before use in order to
extend bed life.
Multimedia Filtration is widely used in the water pre-treatment, which available with
Automatic and/or manual operational features. The tank material fiber glass reinforced plastic
and stainless steel & Mild steel.
The cartridge can filter out anything down to about 5 to 10 micrometres in size. In most
areas cartridge filters are less expensive than other filters but cost more than sand filters. How-
ever cartridge filters are more popular because of the minimal maintenance involved.
In some cases it may be sufficient to simply hose off the cartridge filter a few times
during swimming season to keep them working properly. Others may need to soak the filters in
detergent or replace them. In any case, maintenance takes only a few minutes to the filtration
system operational.
Softener Plant :
PROCESS
It consists of passing raw water containing hardness through a bed of cation resin
in sodium form. The hardness ions Ca & Mg are taken up by resin and in exchange sodium ions
are relinquished from the resin. Raw water will continue to get softened till the resin gets
exhausted. Bringing back the resin to its original form is called regeneration. Softener resin is
regenerated by sodium chloride.
D.M. Plant :
Water Quality (Conductivity) from Two Bed Outlet will be between 15 to 20 micro siemens.
First raw water is passed through the cation resins column (H+ form), which converts all
ionized salts to the equivalent mineral acids.
Then Anion Resins Column (OH form), which absorbs these acids and finally gives De mineral-
ized (Deionized) water. When resins are exhausted - the cations Resins are regenerated with
Hydrochloric acid (Hcl) and the Anion resins are regenerated by caustic Soda (NaOH) solu-
tion. So the same resins can be used over and over again to produce the DM water.
RO Plant : (Reverse Osmosis)
The JWTS desalination unit uses the reverse osmosis process to remove dissolved solids from
brackish or saline water. The process is continuous and requires no regeneration chemicals.
The unit is factory tested and easy to install and operate. Treated water quality is continuously
monitored by a Total dissolved Salt indicator.
PRINCIPLE OF REVERSE OSMOSIS
Reverse Osmosis system uses semi-permeable spiral wound membrane to separate and
remove dissolved solids, organics, pyrogens, submicron colloidal matter and bacteria from
water. Feed water is delivered under high pressure through permeators, where water perme-
ates through the minute pores of the membrane and is delivered as purified product water.
REMOVAL OF IMPURITIES
Impurities in the water are concentrated in the reject stream and flushed to drain.

The system is available in a wide range of models for treating water quality of varying Total
Dissolved Solids (TDS) with different flow rates.
