ACTIVITY 1:

1. In the face of this new science and technology innovation, why it is important

to study STS?

Studying science, technology, and society is very important for every individual, but
especially for individuals who are working towards a career in science or technology.
Technology is progressing at a faster pace than ever before and new science discoveries are
being made every day. Studying science, technology, and society will help an individual to
understand the world around them, and in turn, this awareness will allow an individual to be
better prepared for new changes in the world. One of the most important things that
studying science, technology, and society will teach you is to be a critical thinker. You will
have a better understanding of how science and technology affect the world around you,
you will learn to think analytically, and you will learn to evaluate the ideas that you
encounter
2. Why is it important to question the moral and ethical issues surrounding the

assigned S&T?

Technological innovations are the drivers of humankind development. As such,

ethical and moral considerations are in order. The caveat is that the frameworks of those
considerations are also obliged to change as well, all geared to benefit the human race
development and survival. There is no such thing as Science innovation, by the way, only
inventions. When new scientific discoveries and inventions come about, their pratical use is
reached through technological innovations.
3. In this time of global pandemic, what are the advantages and disadvantages

of science and technology?

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated significant uncertainty across all

aspects of the global economy and society. Likewise, the pandemic’s long term
impacts on science, technology and innovation are impossible to predict. Working
from home could allow for more flexible work engagements and increase diversity in
STI, enabling greater involvement of those with care responsibilities or located in
more remote areas. Savings from reduced office space could also provide more
resources for innovation activities but may also be used in other ways.

More scientific conferences, training and research collaboration activities may be

held virtually, with uncertain outcomes on the productivity of STI. Virtual conferences
allow for larger and more diverse audiences than in-person meetings, and reduce
transaction costs as well as the carbon footprint incurred by travel. Virtual training
tools facilitate access to training for wider audiences and are highly flexible, making
training more compatible with work commitments. They could also facilitate more
tailored training by pooling expertise across institutions and enabling students to
participate remotely in training offered by partner institution
4. “If you were an inventor, what would you invent?” Sketch a draft of your

invention then answer the following questions:

a. What is your invention? What does it do?

b. How is your invention similar to or different from existing tools or

technologies in terms of function?

c. Why is there a need for this invention? How will this invention make

the world a better place to live in?
