The survey aims to measure a person's perceptions about expressing their own opinions and conforming to social norms and rules.

The scores on items 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, and 31 need to be reversed when calculating the total score.

THE NEED FOR UNIQUENESS SCALE

Directions: the following statements concern your perceptions about yourself in several situations. Rate
your agreement with each statement by using a scale in which 1 denotes strong disagreement, 5
denotes strong agreement, and 2, 3, and 4 represent intermediate judgments. In the blanks before each
statement, place a number from 2 to 5 from the following scale:

1 – Strongly 2 – Somewhat 3 – Neutral 4 – Somewhat 5- Strongly

There are no right or wrong answers, so select the number that most closely reflects you on each
statement. Take your time, and consider each statement carefully.

To calculate the total Need for Uniqueness Scale score, first reverse each of the scores on items 2, 3,
5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, and 31. That is, on these items only, perform the
following reversals: 1 à 5; 2 à 4; 3 à 3; 4 à 2; 5 à 1. Then, add the scores on all 32 items, using
the reversed scores for the aforementioned items. Higher scores reflect a higher need for uniqueness.
