Also publishing chess books of the highest standard are McFarland of North
Carolina. The difference is that each book concentrates on one specific
individual, his/her games and career. Usually hardback, but with some SB
options. We currently have several titles, all pre-owned but still in top
condition, so we can offer them at a considerable discount to the original list
price. Check out the games section for more details.
We have a matching set of 6 titles, all identical with blue card covers slightly smaller
than A4 in size, comb-bound, typescript, limited editions in VG condition.
Spence was a lawyer from Omaha, Nebraska in the dawn of DIY publication and
was thus able to by-pass the demands of fussy publishers. He doubtless had the
office equipment and an efficient typist or two, as they are beautifully typed and
presented. He died in 1978 at the age of just 54.
All of which makes these items relatively scarce and attractive to collectors. Here
they are in numerical order.

This sequence of annual tournaments evolved from earlier events, until by the 1954
competition in Oslo it was recognised by FIDE at the regular World Student Team
Championship. It comprised a single team of 4 with 2 reserves from each competing
country. Away from the board relationships between the college students was
relaxed but the chess was serious and of a high standard. Comprehensive booklets
were produced each year, mostly overseen by FIDE Vice President, Jaroslav Sajtar,
and are fully indexed with many photos. All games are in algebraic notation &
thoroughly annotated with one diagram each. All books are generally in good
condition, apart from the staples starting to rust.
From them one can see some of the players involved over the years e.g. Spassky;
Korchnoi; Portisch; Tal; Each one has a distinctive cover design of 2 knights on
horseback on a chessboard of 2 different colours each year, the colours reflecting
those in the national flag of the host nation. Lombardy; Szabo; Mednis; Benko; Hort;
Polgar; Basman; Keene; Soltis; Hübner; Karpov, Timman & Suttles are just a few of
the names that stand out from the crowd.

The following series of 5 titles is a development of the earlier successful and popular Batsford series, incorporating
subsequent developments in the art. The later titles have become increasingly scarce to a point where, at one
time, a number of experts were of the opinion that Vol. 5 was a “phantom book”, i.e. planned but never actually
completed or published. But here it is – a collector’s piece. All large format with attractive pictorial covers.

9 - Magazines & Yearbooks
NB: Volumes 1910 - 1925 (5 volumes in total) were all subjected to flood damage in 1960 and consequently bear the following
defects to a greater or lesser extent: (a) White water stains to maroon cloth covers: (b) Patches of black mould on cloth and/or
endpapers: (c) Pages ruckled in some books. (d) Splitting of the cloth at joint with spine in a few cases. (d) Some red colouring
from cloth drifted to page edges. However, the internal stitching and binding is mostly still strong, and a good bookbinder could
work wonders.
In good condition the early volumes would be valued at well over £100 (each). These are priced accordingly. The cloth colour
varies slightly over the years, mostly maroon, but I have used “red” to cover all variations.

POPULAR CHESS
One of Mike Basman’s efforts / projects.
This started after the demise of Rabbits Review, (see below) and ran to 15 issues between 1982 – 1987.
All are; (a) undated: (b) double-sided A4 sheets (c) stapled in top left corner: (d) contain mostly annotated games in typescript
with good clear diagrams. (e) Contain much about the relative strengths of the chess computers of the day (Novag: Tandy:
Mephisto etc.) Testing them against each other and/or humans. Much of the other material was submitted by a few of his 300
readers.
3 little-known facts about him are:-
(a) “He (Basman) is probably the most important figure in British Chess” wrote Ray Keene.
(b) As a small child his babysitter was Clementine Campbell, who became Cleo Laine, the great jazz singer.
(c) He is of Armenian parentage.

New In Chess Yearbooks.
In addition to the 8 magazines per year, NIC additionally published 4 Yearbooks per annum. Under the Chief
Editors, Jan Timman and Dirk ten Geuzendam, they started in 1984 when the Yearbooks were published several
times a year, containing opening surveys & theoretical articles by many of the world’s top players. This series
highlighted the developments in opening practice & theory, current at the time.
General Editors were Gena Sosonko & Paul van der Sterren. The ratings of the 2 players in each game are
given, as well as the event at which it was played.
These are the original Yearbooks that helped set NIC on the road to great publishing successes.
All 51 items are in top class condition, with either dust wrappers, hard-backs or later SB

Reprint. The foundation for the NIC series was laid out in the Keybook
which contains 2,800 topical opening variations, illustrated by £20.00
1,500 complete games, plus diagrams and 2,500 game fragments.
All games, here & in the subsequent Yearbooks, are in figurine
notation rendering language redundant. Where there is text,
it’s in English.

POPULAR CHESS
One of Mike Basman’s efforts / projects.
This started after the demise of Rabbits Review, (see below) and ran to 15 issues between 1982 – 1987.
All are; (a) undated: (b) double-sided A4 sheets (c) stapled in top left corner: (d) contain mostly annotated games in
typescript with good clear diagrams. (e) Contain much about the relative strengths of the chess computers of the day (Novag:
Tandy: Mephisto etc.) Testing them against each other and/or humans. Much of the other material was submitted by a few of
his 300 readers.
