    This thesis analyzes the psychological and socio-cultural factors that shape how job application letters and resumes are constructed in the Philippine context. The author examines 100 job application documents using qualitative and quantitative methods to map out the typical linguistic structure and categories. Employer surveys and job interview excerpts are also used to validate the findings. The study identifies a seven-part structure for letters and five-move structure for resumes that flexibly convey the purpose of applying for a job. These genres are influenced by an individual's psychology, background, and culture. The author proposes teaching genres to increase Filipinos' awareness of workplace communication conventions.

    Genres represent purposive ways of communicating in a culture. Genre studies


    have paved the way for understanding discourses in academic, professional, and
    institutional contexts. This paper analyzed the psycholinguistic encoding and socio-
    cultural imprints in the construction of an application letter and résumé to carry out the
    social activity of job application in the Philippine setting. Qualitative and quantitative
    methods were employed in the analysis of 100 job application documents and in coming
    out with a text-linguistic mapping and syntactic categorizations of the genres.
    Employer’s group survey and job interview extracts were used to cross-validate and
    provide vignettes on the interpretations made.

    A seven-part and five-move generic structure occurring in a flexible sequence


    characterize the job application letter and résumé, respectively, which are influenced
    and constrained by the encoder’s psycholinguistic repertoire, professional background,
    and socio-cultural milieu. A genre-based pedagogy is proposed to sensitize Filipinos of
    the existing genres in the workplace.
