III. Introduction

The town of Prieto Diaz was once a barrio called “Visita” of the

municipality of Bacon. It was settlement situated on a hillside close to the

municipality of Gubat. Only few families lived in this barrio whose source of

livelihood is farming and hunting, since wild pigs and deers were abundant in this

place. The long trek they endured to and from the “visita” especially when burying

their dead, finally forced them to construct their own cemetery.

History reveals that a hunter named Juan Buntugan headed this people. One

nearly morning, together with his bow and arrow, Buntugan went on one of his

hunting spree. The named Buntugan remained until Mr. Bernardino Monreal was

appointed Gobernadorcillo of Sorsogon in 1879. He changed “Buntugan” to

“Montupar”, it being located in a peninsula like place where people usually meet.

“Tupar” in the dialect means, “to meet” in English.

Fr. Gabriel Prieto Fr. Severino Diaz

The town was given its present name honor of the two (2) Bicolano martyrs,

Rev. Frs. Gabriel Prieto and Severino Diaz, when it became independent from the

municipality of Bacon in October 12, 1903 by virtue Public Law No. 940. Prieto

Diaz was the only town organized after Sorsogon became a province on October

17, 1894.

The town named was created by combining the surname of two of the 15

martyr’s of the Bicol Region who were executed in Luneta- Fr. Gabriel Prieto and

Severino Diaz. It is home to people speaking Bikol Sorsogon and Agtang

Tabangnon languages.

Years before 1878, the town of Prieto

Diaz was “visita” or barrio of the Municipality

of Bacon under the Parish of Our Lady of

Annunciation. The 32 families headed by Juan

Buntugan settled in an high place called

OLD MUNTUPAR
“Pigbanua”. In 1879, then Gobernadorcillo Bernardino Monreal renamed

Buntugan to “Muntupar”, meaning a meeting place of the hunter.

THE OLD CHURCH OF

PRIETO DIAZ

The facade old church also bear the inscription, 1881. The only concrete

proof of its existence is the remnants of the church, which was destroyed by the

1947 earthquake, now visible at the right side of the church. This church was made

from cut coral stone and rubblework also of coral stone quarried most likely at the

shore of the town.

These structures, few as they may be compared to the other heritage center

in the province, are tangible reminder of history, hope and aspirations of its people

that must be protected and taken care of.
