Measuring Area
Area (A) is defined as the space
occupied by a flat shape or the
surface of an object.

Area (A) is measured in squared

units.
Formula :

Area of a
Area of a Square Area of a triangle
Rectangle

1 𝑏ℎ
𝐴 = 𝑙𝑤 𝐴= 𝑏ℎ 𝑜𝑟 𝐴 =
𝐴= 𝑠2 𝑜𝑟 𝐴 = 𝑠 𝑠 2 2

Measuring Area
Formula of a Trapezoid:
Area of a Trapezoid
1
𝐴 = ℎ(𝑏1 + 𝑏2 )
2
Base 1(𝑏1 )

Height (h)

Base 2(𝑏2 )
𝑏1 = 5 ft
Example: Example: Find the
area of the given figure. h=4ft

𝑏2 = 11𝑓𝑡
Solution:
1
𝐴 = ℎ(𝑏1 + 𝑏2 )
2
1
𝐴 = (4)(5 + 11)
2
𝐴 = 32 𝑓𝑡 2
Answer: A = 32 𝑓𝑡 2
𝑏1 = 10 ft
Try: Find the area of the given
figure. h=5 ft

𝑏2 = 14𝑓𝑡
Solution:
1
𝐴 = ℎ(𝑏1 + 𝑏2 )
2
1
𝐴 = (5)(10 + 14)
2
𝐴 = 60 𝑓𝑡 2
Answer: A = 60 𝑓𝑡 2
Formula of a Circle:
Area of a circle:
2
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟
If diameter is given and radius is unknown
𝑑
use 𝑟 = to find the radius.
2

NOTE: 𝜋 ≈ 3.14
Example: The radius of a circle measures 9 in.
Find its area.

Solution:
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝐴 = (3.14)(9)2
𝐴 = 3.14 9 × 9
𝐴 = 254.34 𝑖𝑛2
Answer: A = 254.34 𝑖𝑛2
Example: The diameter of a circle measures 17 in.
Find its area.
Solution:
𝑑 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝑟= 2
2 𝐴 = (3.14)(8.5)
17
𝑟= 𝐴 = 3.14 8.5 × 8.5
2 𝐴 = 226.865 𝑖𝑛 2
𝑟 = 8.5 𝑖𝑛
Try: The radius of a circle measures 5 in. Find its
area.
Solution:
2
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟
2
𝐴 = (3.14)(5)
𝐴 = 3.14 5 × 5
2
𝐴 = 78.5 𝑖𝑛
Answer: A = 78.5 𝑖𝑛2
Try: The diameter of a circle measures 14 in. Find
its area.
Solution: 2
𝑑 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟
𝑟= 𝐴 = (3.14)(7) 2
2
14 𝐴 = 3.14 7 × 7
𝑟= 𝐴 = 153.86 𝑖𝑛 2
2
𝑟=7
Jk has an empty pringles. He wants to cover the top of the
pringles. If its diameter is 3 inches, what is the area of the
cover?
Solution:
𝑑 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝑟= 𝐴 = (3.14)(1.5)2
2
3 𝐴 = 3.14 1.5 × 1.5
𝑟= 𝐴 = 7.065 𝑖𝑛 2
2
𝑟 = 1.5
