Why do some teachers talk so much ?

Most teachers talk too much.  They enjoy standing up there, in front of a
largely captive audience, and talking about what they know.  It makes
them feel important
Teachers should not talk more than 10 minutes in each class.  The rest
of the class time students should be doing something–practicing what
they have learned, be engaged in finding answers to questions their
teachers have asked, be at work on a learning project, doing group work,
pair-work.  They should be learning actively.

It gets better–research has shown that students taught by active

learning, on average, score a grade and a half higher than those who
learn in traditional (boring) ways

In what ways can teachers encourage students to think things through

more ?

Give Positive Feedback

Praising students is one of the most effective and easiest ways to
lift their spirits and keep them working hard. Teachers who excel
at praising their students do it publically as well as privately, both
verbally and in writing. They send notes home to parents (when
appropriate) and have special events during school to recognize
the achievements of their students.

Make Topics Practical

Theory is all find and dandy, but when it has no basis in
reality some may ask what the point is. Whenever teachers
can, make the English lessons practical. Use real life English
materials and give students realistic scenarios. Make a point of
creating opportunities for them to use the English they are
learning with native speakers. Teachers can include conversation
partners in class or send their students out on creative
fieldtrips around their campus. When students see that what they
are learning is practical and useful, they will be motivated to learn
more.

How important is it to memorize facts?

memorization serves as an essential exercise in our lives, for in
repeating information to store in long-term memory, it is the foundation of
further learning and thinking. Memorization is crucial in learning new
concepts, for if one cannot remember a concept, one has not really
learned it. Knowing some information – or having a base of knowledge in
long-term memory – frees up brain power in the working memory to
continue learning new material and thus facilitates further education.
Memorization challenges the brain and trains the brain to remember, all
the while improving neural plasticity. One’s focus and ability to pay
attention increase. By having a foundation of information to draw from,
one’s creativity can flow. Also, when one knows the lines of a poem or
song or play or Scripture verse or catechism question well, one is able to
understand and enjoy it more. The more one rehearses information, the
greater one’s working memory can be and the more likely that one will
store the material in long-term memory, and this bodes well for warding
off cognitive decline.  Rather than being merely rote, memorization
provides mental liberation.

Do you agree that the school system tends to destroy curiosity and
creativity?
While you may argue that school is not necessarily a place which inspires or
develops creativity. It definitely does not kill it. I don't find school creatively
stimulating, however I don't allow it to stifle my creative side. I merely pursue
it outside of school .It is an uncreative person who allows school to "kill" their
creativity.

In any event I personally think that school actually gives us the tools which
helps drive our creative side.
. For example, if you learn literature, you take chance to write poem or
fiction. If not, because young people don't go to school, he or she has
difficult to know literature. Not only this case, but also in many field,
students take chance to improve their creativity in school.

Do you think the education system in your country works well?

I think we have quite a comprehensive education system, especially the

basic education. But it still has some problems. The majority of teachers
and students work for exams in schools nowadays in Vietnam. As you
know, Vietnam basically has an exam-oriented education system, with
force-feeding approaches dominating. So, some students are very’ good
at memorizing facts but what they really need is creativity, imagination
and originality. But actually some improvements are being made
gradually. For example, in some good schools, quality teaching is being
practised, which means that the students are learning to be independent
with practical problem-solving skills.

How could the way of teaching English be improved?

Develop your own teaching materials
You may be teaching English from course textbooks right now, but you’ll want
to find ways of developing material to use in class which will engage and
challenge your students at some point. Teachers who create great materials
are popular with their students and get great feedback.
Confidence and skills to give motivating and interesting lessons to your
students
Teachers are a bit like actors. You have to put on a show to get your students
focusing on your lesson and keep their interest. Some people can feel very
uncomfortable doing this. So our courses will give you the skills to keep your
students learning, and the confidence to use them.
