1) ENHANCEMENTS
There’s major change in the way that XMS detects and reports on the online
status of Access Points.

XMS uses WebSockets to push configurations to and pull statistics from Access
Points. Once added to XMS Access Points will initially establish a WebSocket
connection to XMS and then approximately every fifty seconds sends a
heartbeat message to XMS to prove that it’s still alive. XMS processes the
heartbeat and replies to the Access Point. If the Access Point doesn’t get a
response to it’s heartbeat it will retry and if unsuccessful after a number of
attempts will try to re-establish the WebSocket connection. If XMS doesn’t
receive a heartbeat from an Access Point for five minutes it declares it DOWN
and will wait for a heartbeat before marking it as UP again.

In previous versions of XMS would assume that Access Points were UP until
proven otherwise, which could lead to symptoms such as:
1. After XMS restart APs appear to be UP but then go DOWN after five
minutes.
2. Refreshing an AP that was in a DOWN state would successfully refresh
the APs configuration in XMS and declare the AP UP only to go DOWN
five minutes later.
3. Adding a new AP to XMS - the AP would be successfully added only to go
DOWN five minutes later.
4. Pushing configurations to APs that were UP due to one of the above
situations, would fail.

In case 1-3 above, XMS assumed that the AP(s) were UP, instead of waiting for
WebSocket connections and heartbeats to be received, before declaring AP(s)
UP.

Now, on startup or after discovering a new AP or refreshing an AP that is

DOWN, XMS will wait for heartbeats to be received before marking Access
Points as UP. This may take several minutes as APs have a random delay before
establishing a WebSocket connection and sending its first heartbeat.

3) PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS AND FIXED PROBLEMS
Resolved Issues between 8.3.3-8835 and 8.3.5-9251x

XMSE-2472 Creating an SSID with EasyPass personal created a Filter list with last
deleted SSID which will create issue in XMS-Cloud.

XMSE-3469 Web Client error when opening certain profiles

XMSE-3591 Deleting Secondary DNS server from Web Client does not remove it from
configuration.

XMSE-3625 Occasional drops in in the Station Line Chart dashboard widget. Usually
between 5-15 minutes after the hour.

XMSE-3645 Back/Restore didn’t preserve Rogue Filtering

XMSE-3647 Selecting EasyPass for Captive Portal gave an erroneous error about invalid
URL

XMSE-3653 Erroneous status message was displayed on Network Settings detail page
even though settings were correctly applied.

3
XMSE-3655 Unable to disable “Enable API access to XMS.” Check box

4) KNOWN ISSUES
 After backup is restored to a machine with a different IP address from the original,
Access Point refresh is required to configure all Access Points with new XMS machine
 After EasyPass is configured on an SSID, this SSID could not be used for other captive
portal types.
 EasyPass Portal should not be deleted in XMS-Cloud until the corresponding SSID is
deleted from XMS-Enterprise.
 When using EasyPass Personal, SSID statistics data is calculated for Personal SSIDs,
however these SSIDs will not be displayed in configuration panels
 When an existing Captive Portal is configured on an SSID, EasyPass cannot be used on
this SSID
 Duplicate Access point entries are displayed when the name of Profiles or AP groups are
differentiated only by underscored (“_”) and a white space

5) LIMITATIONS AND CONDITIONS

The following table shows the maximum number of Access Points supported various
memory sizes and polling configurations.

Memory Size Default Pollers Enhanced Pollers

8GB 200 140
16GB 700 600
24GB 1100 1000
32GB 1200 1050
48GB 2050 1850

6) UPGRADE NOTES
 If you are upgrading from a release earlier than 8.1.1, please upgrade to XMS-
Enterprise 8.1.7 first, with the XMS Upgrade tool.

4
 The upgrade process can take up to 30 minutes or longer for the Web UI to be
available. This is due to a one time re-indexing of several statistics tables to improve
performance. It’s very important not to interrupt the upgrade process as damage
to the database could result requiring Technical Support.

 If you are using AOS older than 7.6, please upgrade AOS before you upgrade XMS.

 XMS Enterprise 8.x requires SSH credentials to the Access Points to perform
Discovery. Please make sure you have SSH user(s) configured on the system.

 Upon upgrade from releases prior to 8.2.7, column selection will revert to default.

 Memory requirements for XMS has approximately doubled as XMS now caches the
last 24 hours data (see chart in the Limitations and Conditions section above).
