HUMANE KILLING
1. After some procedures, it may be necessary to kill the animal to prevent
further suffering. The person who conducted the procedure must ensure that the
animal is killed competently and humanely. List out the appropriate methods used in
humane killing for the animals in research (2 marks). Refer to website
https://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/animals/three-rs/
1) Replace the use of animals with alternative techniques, or avoid the use of animals
altogether.
2) Reduce the number of animals used to a minimum, to obtain information from fewer
animals or more information from the same number of animals.
3) Refine the way experiments are carried out, to make sure animals suffer as little as
possible. This includes better housing and improvements to procedure which minimise
pain and suffering and for improve animal welfare.
The method that was used to sacrifice the animal was exposing the animal to Carbon Dioxide
gas.
