WI 1 Sealing of Safety Components (WI) Page 2 of 6

1 PURPOSE
Improve the safety of sensitive elevator functions in general and ensure the same safety level of
safety functions worldwide.

Sealing of adjustments and settings, after testing, secures and documents the status of the safety
component.
• correct adjustment and setting
• secured setting
• traceability
• compliance (legal and code)

The process of sealing fosters the accountability & awareness of technicians working on safety
components.

Checking of sealed components save time during all type of inspections

• SAIS,
• maintenance,
• CPSI and
• corrective actions,
independent whether the systems/components are Schindler own or third party.

2 SCOPE
For the time being the focus of the WI is on elevators, escalators will be integrated at a later
stage.

The work instruction is valid for safety components in new installation.

For existing installations specific instructions have to be applied during maintenance:

- J 42500101 : PSIG
- J 42500105 : Checklist
- J 42500102 : PSIT :
- J 42500104 : Sealing guideline for governor and safety gear.

With the exception of chapter 3.3.2 the work instruction is applicable for EI as well.

Corrective actions based on FI-DL are excluded from this work instruction.

The work instruction

is valid worldwide,
applies to all organizational entities of the Schindler Group, including dual brands,
applies to all business units for NI, EI and MOD elevators,
is binding for all those who create, maintain, release and publish acceptance documents.

Sealing of safety components is required for

• Elevators installed by sub-contractors
• 3rd party elevators installed by Schindler
• 3rd party elevators installed by sub-contractors in the name of Schindler
• Modernization, transformation and replacement

WI 1 Sealing of Safety Components (WI) Page 3 of 6

The sealing of safety components is independent from the local code, it is a Schindler Safety
Requirement.

In the Schindler group the following components must have a seal:

• All safety gears - including 3rd party safety gears (i.e. Thyssen, Wittur, ...)
• All overspeed governors - including 3rd party overspeed governors
• Rope gripper (i.e. Bode: sealed pressure switch at the solenoid valve with colour seal)

The following components are and remain without sealing:

Components without possibility of changing settings or adjustments don't need sealing

• instantaneous safety gears, i.e. RF1/RF2
• buffers
• landing door locks
• rupture valves
• electric / electronic safety components (i.e. MoSIS, ...)

Safety components for 'safety up' and 'ACUM' with inevitable operational wear are excluded from
sealing, for the time being. Specific installation, inspection, maintenance instructions and
documentation have to be in place and applied.
• i.e. machine brakes

It is not allowed to adjust and seal qualified 3rd party safety components, for the time being. Either
the component is send back to the supplier for adjustment, correct setting and sealing or the
supplier adjusts and seals the safety component on site. (see remark below)

For any setting, adjustment and sealing the group released documentation in the Product
Navigation Center (TK) applies.

Existing sealing, which are still in order, are not touched by this WI. They should remain as they
are.

In case of uncertainty "Corporate Product Safety" will define the framework.

Remark:
Subject of clarification is, whether specific trained SAIS inspectors on the adjustment and setting
of 3rd party safety components, will be allowed to seal.

Sealing is the securing of the settings and adjustments of safety components against
maladjustment, either by unauthorized persons or self-maladjustment (vibrations, impacts …).

The seal may have different shapes and properties. It is defined by the lead office's design.
Types of seal: Lead, Aluminium, Plastic Seals / special seal rivets / sealing wax / …

The sealing tool is basically given by the design and definition of the specific seal, i.e. pliers.

Schindler uses currently sealing types described under 3.3

3.2 Permission to seal

Adjusting and/or sealing of safety components are only allowed to trained, qualified and certified
persons.

Production and/or third party suppliers are entities which are requested to deliver pre-adjusted
and sealed safety components. Production ensures internally that sealing is done by trained and
qualified persons under their responsibility. Production sites are certified suppliers, i.e. LD
95/16/EC Module IX or equivalent.

Schindler SAIS Inspectors are qualified, trained and certified persons to seal and/or adjust safety
components.

The sealing will be done by the local SAIS inspector. This excludes that service technicians
performing the 5 years periodic safety inspection can do the adjustment and sealing, when they
detect a broken seal or another non-conformance, unless they have the provable qualification and
training to do so.

External persons, sealing components of elevators in the name of Schindler for elevators
delivered by Schindler or elevators in the Schindler portfolio, must comply with this guideline.

The organizational function in the KGs accountable for sealing is the Safety Manager.

The Safety Manager controls and ensures the compliance with this work instruction by:
• defining and authorizing the persons, which are allowed to seal
• providing the training for the KG's SAIS inspectors to adjust, set and seal safety
components
• keeping the know how of the KG's SAIS inspectors up to date
• documenting and archiving the performed trainings for each inspector
• providing the sealing tools and seal parts to the SAIS inspector
• organizing and administrating the unique identification stamp for the pliers of the
authorized person
• ensuring the traceability of the unique sealing regarding the authorized person

3.3 The Seal

The standard seal is a lead wire seal. The material may change in the future, see §3.1

The embossed stamp on the seal is done with two engraved embossing plates:

The embossing plate shows on one side the organizational entity:

KG seals have the 3-letter KG mnemonic: i.e. SCH, DEU, PAR, SEC, ...
KW seals have the 3-letter KW mnemonic: i.e. SDS, SSE, SAO
3rd party suppliers may use their on engraving, anyway the seal as a whole is unique traceable.

WI 1 Sealing of Safety Components (WI) Page 5 of 6

The embossing plate shows on the other side a 3-digit-number.

The number is unique within the KG and linked to the inspector: i.e. 001, 123, 786, 999
The KG ensures traceability of the seals by administration of the unique and personal id-number.

Both embossing combined ensure the uniqueness of the seal, while §3.2 ensures the traceability
within the KG or supplier.

The dimension and layout of the embossed stamp are defined in chapter 7.

3.3.1 Supply of sealing material

Supply of pliers, embossing plates, sealing ropes and seals in general is in the responsibility of
the KGs safety manager or the production or the third party supplier.

Field Support Ebikon, EBI-FS, offers the service to supply pliers, engraved or blank embossing
plates and lead wire seals (lead and wire).

i.e. SAIS supporting documents: i.e. EJ 604723 for GB32, EJ 604724 for G-Series safeties

The following components are allowed for adjustment and re-sealing in the field:
Safety Gears:
• - G-Series (LLV only) : G01, G01C, G11, G21
• - GED-Series
• - SGC-Series

Overspeed Governors:
• - GB 32/42 only NA version, due to a code requirement
