REACTION PAPER

The African Schindler's List has been titled Hotel Rwanda. The film shows the genocide
of over a million people in Rwanda, which was led by the Hutu ethnic group against the Tutsi
ethnic group. Some of the worst crimes in human history occurred in Rwanda in 1994, and the
events went practically unreported by the rest of the world in an era of high-speed connectivity
and round-the-clock journalism. One million individuals were mercilessly slaughtered in just
three months. An ordinary guy summons tremendous fortitude in the face of these awful acts,
moved by his love for his family, to rescue the lives of nearly a thousand vulnerable refugees by
providing them sanctuary in the hotel he manages. Because they are not allowed to intervene in
the genocide, the UN Peacekeeping forces, directed by Colonel Oliver , are unable to take
decisive action against the Interhamwe. The Rwandans are left behind while the foreign nationals
are removed. The film is based on a genuine tale that occurred in 1994, during the age of instant
communication. But, how did Rwanda's condition become so bad, if not the worst, in the world?.

This movie's violence was devastating. I couldn't stand watching some of the images in
which Hutu rebels murdered Tutsis one by one. Children had to watch their parents die and then
die themselves. I could almost sense the people's anxiety and worry. The most depressing scene
in the film was when the hotel car had to pass through some bumps in a foggy area, only to
discover that they were caused by a pile of hundreds of dead bodies on the sidewalk. The smell
of blood could only be felt. Tutsis were treated mostly like animals rather than people. It
appeared as if anyone who was not a Hutu had no right to exist. Bribery was used to save one's
life, but he was eventually killed. A specific ethnic group was discriminated against, whose lives
were taken, whose human rights were abused, and whose dignity was disregarded. A number of
fundamental human rights abuses were committed in this film.

What may be inferred about the movie is that it focused only to Paul and the colonel and
not thewhole genocide. However, I believe that, in reflecting the reality of what occurred in
Rwanda, the film attempts to depict the truth during the genocide, to which only a few people
responded. It reflects the international community's indifference to the Rwandan conflict or its
willful blindness to the death and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. How and
why did these super power nations become the custodians of Rwanda? The Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, which provides a common standard of achievement for all peoples
and states, was declared by the United States General Assembly, of which these superpower
nations are also members. It brings out the universally secured fundamental human rights.

The US remains committed to assisting Rwandans in their efforts to preserve the

evidence of the atrocities that occurred in 1994. Indeed, documenting the history of what has
occurred and properly capturing the extent of the deeds done is one of the most powerful
strategies we can take to prevent mass tragedies from occurring again. The United Nations has
been chastised for its lack of action. In terms of accountability, the UN has been judged the most
responsible, followed by France, who arrived too late and ended up shielding the genocidaires,
permanently destabilizing the region. The US then aggressively campaigned against a successful
UNAMIR, only getting involved to help the same Hutu refugee population and genocidaires as
France, leaving the genocide survivors to fend for themselves. As we remember the Rwandan
genocide this year, and every year, the United States joins Rwandans and the international
community in solemn reflection to remember all of the victims of the genocide, and to recommit
to doing everything we can to prevent such atrocities from occuring again.

Through this situation it is important to be informed about what is happening in our

world from time to time. Not just sitting and doing things that didn't help for us but to be active
on what is happening around the world. As one nation, we need to unite for the future of our
nation.
