WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR BRIDGE

I. SETTING OUT, EXCAVATION

Setting out procedure shall be as follows:

1. Setting out of the works will be coordinated with the Site Manager.
2. The Site Supervisor shall establish survey points at the location of all in-ground structures to
be constructed under the contract.
3. Where required survey points shall be marked to identify the structure or service for which
they are intended to be used.

The excavation work procedure shall be as follows:

1. Cleaning the site area & set out all the excavation area .
2. Recording all the important ground levels in the excavation area.
3. Starting excavation after the approval of drawing. excavation shall extend a sufficient
distance from the structure to allow for placement and removal of forms, installation of
services and inspections.
4. Carry out preliminary excavations at foundation positions

II. FOUNDATION

1. Install foundation piles to a suitable load bearing soil strata - this can either be by driving
preconstructed concrete or steel piles to the required depth with a pile driver, or by using a
boring machine to create the void for the pile, placing a casing in the void followed by
lowering steel reinforcement and pouring concrete to form the pile.
2. Complete excavations to the appropriate formation level.
3. Trim projecting piles to required level using mechanical saws or cutting equipment.
4. Construction of a reinforcement pile cap upon which piers and abutments will be constructed
follows in a similar manner as the construction of the pad footing.

III. BRIDGE PIERS

1. Fixing a grillage of steel reinforcement for piers to the starter bars.

2. Erecting vertical formwork for piers with shores and bracing.
3. Placing and vibrating concrete into formwork for piers.
4. Stripping shutters and curing concrete.

1. ABUTMENT

1. Fixing a grillage of steel reinforcement for abutment walls.

2. Erecting vertical formwork for abutment walls.
3. Placing concrete in wall formwork and compacting by vibration
4. Removing shutters, curing concrete, treating exposed surfaces and applying waterproof
membrane to faces retaining soil fill – the waterproof membrane can typically be a bitumen
coating applied by brush or spray.
5. Drain is laid behind the abutments comprising a small pipe with a granular surround.
6. Placing and compacting granular fill, behind abutments and wing walls, to road formation
level.
7. Preparation of seating for bridge beams

2. BRIDGE DECK

1. Taking delivery of precast / prestressed concrete or steel bridge beams and erecting in
position over temporary props at pier positions and abutments using cranes.
2. Erecting soffit formwork, between and along outer edges of bridge beams, and side
forms.
3. Fixing inserts for services and additional structural elements.
4. Fixing grillage of steel reinforcement for in-situ concrete deck and parapet beam.
5. Placing concrete for bridge deck and in-situ edge beams.
6. Using steel trowel, chamfering edge tools and broom to texture the concrete to the
specified pattern while concrete is still in the plastic stage of set,
7. Curing deck concrete, stripping formwork, treating exposed surfaces
8. Waterproofing top of structural deck.
