My philosophy is that for a nurse to effectively care for patients he or she must be being caring,
trustful, compassionate, honest and respectful. A nursing career is very stressful and demanding
thus a good nurse must have the ability to exhibit the above attributes consistently. A good nurse
should also take into consideration the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of the patient
(Kikuchi & Simmons, 2016). The core of nursing is caring, trust and compassion, without these
values, it is impossible to affect or influence the outcome of the patient's healing process. A good
A personal nursing philosophy must include all the four aspects of nursing meta-paradigm:
environment, health, nurse and person. Research says that different nurses have different sets of
individual values, attributes, feelings, and perspectives about health. Patients care means many
different things to many different nurses. The meta-paradigm of a person refers to a patient who
is the sole recipient of the care. This meta-paradigm focuses on a person's spirituality, cultural
believes social-economic status, friends and family members of the patients. In other words, the
meta-paradigm of a person focuses on the mind, body, and soul of the patients to achieve fully
headlines.
The meta-paradigm environment incorporates both internal and external factors surrounding the
patients. This includes the interaction between the patients and visitors as well as the immediate
environment. Patients’ immediate environment plays an important role in the healing process.
The third meta-paradigm is nursing. It focuses on the nurse and how he or she applies the
knowledge and skills acquired when handling patients. The fourth meta-paradigm focuses on the

healing and curing process. It entails accessing patients based on their individual needs with the
I will add caring as the 5th concept of nursing meta-paradigm. This is because caring is the core
of nursing. Without nursing care, most patients will not achieve full recovery. Additionally,
many individuals choose the nursing profession because of their desire to take care of others. I
would not eliminate any of the meta-paradigm concepts because they all play an important role
As an art and science, how has your personal nursing philosophy unfolded?
The theories I have learned in this course have demonstrated that the foundation of nursing was
based on caring for others. Any action taken in response to patients' needs correctly defines the
art of nursing. It is an art to care, respect and handle patients in the most skillful way. As a
science nursing involves assisting patients with daily living activities, treatment plans, etc. The
science of nursing has helped me to diagnose and provide the right medication to patients.
Have there been ideas that have challenged your personal values or assumptions?
My values/assumptions have not been challenged throughout the course; however, most of the
theories learned during the course were very supportive and only affirmed my philosophy.
Have there been ideas that have caused you personal conflict and may lead to
There were no ideas that conflicted with my personal beliefs and values; however, the concepts
acquired from the theories presented were core for anyone aspiring to lead a successful nursing
career.
What actions have you taken that illustrate your personal nursing philosophy?
I have been working on strengthening the values outlined in my philosophy. I have created a
trustworthy relationship with patients; I have been giving patients the required attention and
Describe your own definitions of concepts involving the Meta paradigm of nursing?
The meta-paradigm of nursing involves four concepts; person, nurse, health, and environment.
The concepts are directly related to one another and play a vital role in patient care. The
foundation of nursing was based on these concepts. Throughout the nursing history patients have
I have changed my first written philosophy severally. The changes were based on the concepts
acquired in the classroom. The role of a nurse is more than just following the written orders of
