Remedial programs are designed to close the gap between what learners know and what
they're expected to know. Remedial programs are expanding in many places because so many
kids faced learning challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. These programs tend to be most
helpful to learners with gaps in their learning because of frequent absences or trouble with focus.
But some learners may not make a lot of progress in remedial programs. The goal of remediation
is to identify, based on course instructional objectives and evidenced by poor performance on
examination(s), areas of weaknesses of material, and, once identified, to assist the learners in
overcoming those weaknesses and develop mastery of the material.

Reading is a multifaceted process that develops only with practice. There are certain
aspects of reading, such as fluency and word recognition which can be learned in a few years.
These basics must be mastered but at the same time reading comprehension should be
emphasized in the process. Pupils can parrot words on a page all day long but if they don’t have
the necessary comprehension skills they will not be able to make predictions about what will
happen next, monitor their understanding of content, sequence or characters, clarify confusing
parts of the text or connect what they’re reading to their own experience or prior knowledge and
that is true comprehension is all about.

After assessing all my pupils, I conducted One on One Reading Intervention via Google
Meet last April 06-07, 2021 to those learners who need remediation. The objective of remedial
teaching is to give additional help to pupils who, for one reason or another, have fallen behind
the rest of the class. Children with learning difficulties have the same psychological needs and
characteristics as other children.

The meeting started at 9:00 in the morning by contacting pupils one by one. I gave first
some Basic Facts exercises. I teached the pupils how to read the Dolch Basic Sight Words, gave
some spelling exercises and allowing them to read passages in English and Filipino. From 9:00
to 11:00 in the morning, I contacted 5 pupils and gave this kind of remediation. We resumed our
meeting at 1:00 in the after noon and repeat the process until it ends up at 4:00 in the afternoon.

Before each meeting ends, I talked to their parents about their child’s progress. I gave
comments about the outcomes and gave some advices how to improve the reading ability of their
child. We ended the meeting by having an agreement that we will give our best and effort to
improve their child’s reading ability.

NEXT STEP: The teacher will continue to guide, motivate and recognize parents and guardians
effort to guide the learner in time of pandemic. The teacher will also plan for
better communication of parent and teacher even in their busy time of work.
The teacher will give more reading exercises.

FEEDBACKING: At the end of the virtual meeting, the learners got motivated to improve their
reading abilities. The teacher gave reward to all the pupils who attended the virtual remediation.
Parents and learners appreciated all the effort of teachers for the sake of their learnings and
looking forward for the next weeklong home activity. The teacher congratulates the learners for
showing their eagerness to learn. The teacher also recognizes parents / guardian’s effort to do
their best to cooperate in the challenge of New Normal in Education.
