Mr. John Neil Calixto, a Filipino citizen living in London, United Kingdom, is my client.

He moved
there in 2017 and has been there for 5 years.

TRANSCULTURAL DIALOGIC ENGAGEMENT

ME: Hi Sir! How are you?

HIM: Hi I’m good.

ME: I’m Jomark C. Orpilla, a student nurse from the Medical Colleges of Northern Philippines, it
is ok for you to talk on something?

HIM: I’m John Neil. Yeah sure what is it?

ME: I would like to interview you about on how you take care of yourself, your cultural
traditions, practices, and cultural care. this is one of our requirement in decent work
employment and transcultural in nursing. Let me know if you are okay with that and willing to
answer my question Sir.

HIM: yeah sure when?

ME: Sir, I know that you are a busy person and would like to speak with you whenever it is
convenient for you. Just let me know if you aren't already busy , sir.

HIM: okay okay, maybe later then. It is ok? I will message you.

ME: Yes Sir! It’s okay po. Thank You!

HIM: Hi Jomark, can we do the interview now?

ME: Yes sir! So can we start?

HIM: Yeah go on.

ME: So, my first question, how do you care yourself day to day?

HIM: Well by eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep and regular exercise.

ME: Is there a difference in how you care for yourself before and now?

HIM: Ahm before I used to work 6 days a week from 9am-5pm, Work - Eat - Sleep. Now, I still
work 6 days in a week but I involves going to gym after my work and eating healthy + enough
sleep.
ME: Okay Sir! Do you have an everyday routine? What it is?

HIM: Aside from waking up in the morning preparing for my work, I work from 9am-5pm then
after that I go to gym. Then go home and get enough sleep.

ME: How do you maintain yourself to become healthy? What are the things you eat? Do u eat
3x a day?

HIM: Positive mentality is also part to become healthy. I love eating fruits like banana, drinking
enough water and meat food like, poultry and fish: Sirloin steak, ground beef, pork tenderloin,
venison, chicken breast, salmon, tilapia and cod. I only eat twice a day, sometimes once…

ME: How about your sleep pattern Sir?

HIM: Usually I sleep at 12:00 midnight and wake up 8:00 in the morning.

ME: oh it’s good Sir, you have an 8hrs sleep. Do you have any hobbies like drinking alcohol or
smoking?

HIM: Drinking beer is moderate, some days none.

ME: How do you practice good hygiene?

HIM: By washing my hand, face and change clothes every proper meal serves. This involves
sterilizing kitchen utensils.

ME: For social, and psychological reasons are you good at it? How do you view yourself?

HIM: Probably, easy to deal person. Easy going.

ME: How do you connect yourself to others?

HIM: Through listening to them first and putting myself to that situation.

ME: Do you have enough support? You feel comfortable with? Make you feel valued? And
persons can help you solve problems and take your concerns seriously.

HIM: Support like friend’s suggestion and advisories? Yes I do my friends and my family.

ME: What are the things you enjoy to do every day?

HIM: Things I do most enjoy at work is dealing with customer cases, disputes and claims. And
of course being in my work place as physical, supervising and making sure all things run
smooth as expected.

ME: If you feel exhausted what are the things you do to relax yourself?

HIM: Listening to music or taking a coffee.


ME: Being there for many yrs. Sir. Have you observe a traditional health practices as you care
for yourself and your family? What are those?

HIM: when I get sick, I just usually take my medicine. Well, being here for many years already
I did not observe any traditional health practices. We immediately go to hospital and consult for
doctor.

HIM: About their culture, Majority of British are addicted to eat processed food, fast food
restaurant and order from home. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday Nights. People are out for
drinks and finish late night. In the weekends, typical English goes out to treat themselves either
in the restaurants, entertainment or fashion designer. Here in UK it is Multi cultural😂👍🏼.

ME: Do have any traditional health beliefs you practice when you get sick Sir?

HIM: Maybe if I am in the Philippines right now I still do the “atang” if I get sick and can’t
recover after having a hospital session already. But here in London, we go to doctor when we
got sick.

ME: Oh okay Sir. How do you promote/maintain cultural care needs of


yourself/family/community?

HIM: For myself and my family health is one of my priorities, “kung maari ayokong may
magkasakit sa amin”. That is why I always remind my family and even my friends to
stay/become healthy. For being here in UK how do I promote and maintain may care needs,
well by staying healthy, do the things that’s make me healthy. Being aware on my problems,
being aware on medicines, on health care systems. Well when you feel you are sick, I just want
to say that you should seek for doctor and believe in the power of medicine. And also just pray
and always ask God for his guidance.

ME: very well said Sir! Thank you sir. That’s all my question sir.

HIM: oh is that all, are we finish already?

ME: Yes Sir! Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe, God bless.

HIM: Thank you also for having me. Goodluck on your nursing journey. Bye

ME: Stay Safe, sir! Again Thank you!


REFLECTION ON THE ENGAGEMENT:

I was impressed by Mr. Neil's self-care practices. Regardless of his work and business
commitments. He continues to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He understands how to manage his
health. He understands how to care for his body. He's a busy person who slept late at night but
still got 8 hours of sleep. He still makes certain that he is mentally stable and that he has a
good mindset. As well as understand how to keep himself healthy. Mr. Neil is a Filipino who
grew up in Ilocos Sur. He may not practice traditional health practices in London, but he is
aware of some ilocano beliefs, such as the "atang." . An atang is a traditional food offering used
to ward off evil spirits in the Philippines. Sinukat, a rice cake, is the most commonly used atang
to ward off sickness. Mr. Neil informed me that the United Kingdom is a multi-cultural country.
Because Mr. Neil did not receive traditional health care there. I have also zero idea about their
cultural health beliefs and I was rushed to research about the health care system of the British
people. According to Commonwealth Fund report in 2017, ranking developed-country
healthcare systems, the United Kingdom was ranked first overall and first in the following
categories: Care Process (i.e. effective, safe, coordinated, patient-oriented) and Equity. This
simply means that they are the best at providing care to their patients. Perhaps they don't have
traditional beliefs about medical care because their country is known for having the best
healthcare system, with their national health service providing the majority of healthcare in the
UK, from general practitioners to Accident and Emergency Departments, long-term care, and
dentistry with advanced technology.

Mr. Neil has a good way of taking care of himself. He also stated that positive thinking is one of
his methods for becoming healthy, which is very important today because managing our mental
health is difficult during this pandemic. It's difficult for us to adjust to the new normal,
especially when we have work or business to attend to.

Here in the Philippines, we cannot deny the fact that there’s still a lot of people who consult to
traditional healers unlike other countries. I'm disappointed that people still believe these
ridiculous circus acts! But, in response to why, I believe it is due to desperation, and these fake
healers take advantage of people who are in pain and take their money. IF FAITH HEALERS
ARE TRUE, WHY ARE THEY NOT VISITING HOSPITALS AND HEALING PEOPLE? As a future
registered nurse and a future educator, I think it is time for me to enlighten the minds of
people for what is best and right for their health in order for them to have a better quality of
life.
