Stand to the statement of Senator Gatchalian regarding his proposal of excluding P.E.
classes in the new normal modality
“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the
body is healthy and strong.” – John F. Kennedy. Kennedy's statement about the
significance of being physically healthy is true. This is why Physical Education is taught
in every grade-school level up to college. As a student, I stand to disagree with the
proposal of Sen. Gatchalian’s regarding the exclusion of Physical Education (P.E.) in
the new normal modality.
As you can see, there is indeed a traumatic situation in our country where
everybody is suffering from the deadliest virus of all time, COVID-19. Students who
regularly exercise struggle to get some physical activity due to pandemic, which can
lead to a weakening of the immune system and other health problems. It has also had a
huge impact on the worldwide educational system, affecting students’ learning, and
forcing schools and universities to temporarily change traditional classes to online. This
is possibly the reason why Gatchalian remove P.E. classes so that students do not have
difficulty learning P.E. online. Because it might be challenging to teach students the
exercises and also not everyone has the privileged of having their own gadgets to
record their performance since PE would use a video format in submitting the
requirements. But, did he really think about the importance of P.E. subject to students?
Or was he may be considering P.E. as insignificant among the other subjects?
First and foremost, Physical Education is not just easy as a pie, especially if your
body is not flexible enough to perform the different tasks, perhaps even the simple
stretching will give you a hard time performing it properly. Another thing is that physical
education is very beneficial to students especially during this time of the pandemic,
where they spend most of their time facing computers and phones to do their tasks for
long periods of time. Imagine that sitting for more than five hours straight without a
break or physical activity would cause you tons of pains and aches all over your body.
According to Edward (2020), sitting for long periods without physical activity uses less
energy than standing or moving and has a risk of dying, similar to the risks of dying
associated with obesity and smoking. Additional data was found about the signs and
symptoms of prolonged sitting, including pain in the neck, thighs, and wrists, lower back
pain, eye strain, dryness, and headache (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons,
2018). However, some studies indicate that people doing physical activity or moderate
to vigorous exercise daily countered the effects of too much sitting at a computer all
day. For this reason, it seems clear that less sitting and doing more activity will lead to
better health.
