TRS-STAR Touch Technology
TRS-STAR Touch is a gesture capable multi touch
solution based on Atmel’s patented Charged Transfer
QMatrix™ method.

Up to 64 discrete keys placed on ITO on Glass à excel-


lent low cost solution for 3.5“, 4.3“ and with a very good
linearity as keys are small.

For sensors up to 9” we are using the MXt224 single


chip touch controller with 224 nodes.

From 10.4” till 22”, we are using the MXt1386, 4 chip


solution touch controller, with 1386 nodes.

Know how for foil and HW/FW design is completely


at TRS-STAR

Our TRS-STAR Touch sensors as well as tail length and


position can be customized. In addition the sensor size
can be bigger than the display to have a linear region
plus a key region.

Our TRS-STAR Touch PAD can have non rectangular


shapes (i.e circle) and is operational till the border.

Atmel maXTouch touchscreen controllers combine the


Atmel patented Charge Transfer and either 8/16-bit or
32-bit Atmel AVR® microcontroller technology to pro-
vide unlimited touch (up to 16 touches), fast response
time, and smart processing of a capacitive touch image,
accurately regenerating and reporting the user’s inter-
action with the touchscreen.

The advanced mXT616 and mXT1386 devices offer a


high-performance architecture with a fast response

They support grip suppression and palm rejection,

giving users a more intuitive user experience.

The mXT616 is a 616-node, 3-chip, 32-bit controller


suitable for tablet PCs, mobile Internet devices, smart-
books, and PCs with touchscreens up to 10.1-inches
windows certificated.

The mXT1386 is a 1386-node, 4-chip, 32-bit controller Display Active Area Key
suitable for tablet PCs, mobile Internet devices, smart-
books, and PCs with touchscreens up to 22-inches.

The mXT224 is a 224-node, single-chip, highly configu-


rable controller suitable for mobile-phones and other
portable devices with touchscreens up to 12.1 inches.

TRS-STAR Touch Driver Support
The TRS-STAR touch controllers are digitizer devices as
described by their USB descriptor. This means operat-
ing systems like Windows 7 or OS X can handle their
information without the need for an additional driver.
In this case the touch can be used as a mouse sub-
stitution. But even on these operating systems there
is no functionality to influence the touch settings like
screen to sensor orientation or sensitivity. To be able
to influence these kinds of settings on the life system,
you need communication access to the controller and
therefore you need a driver.

The UPDD (Universal Pointing Device Driver) provided


with the TRS-STAR touch controllers SMTC-T10 and
SMT-CO16 is available for a couple of operating
systems and give the system integrator a couple of
ways to tailor the touch controller to their needs.

In addition you can use the touch controllers not only on


USB but also with a serial interface.

OS/2. Unix workstation drivers are also available.

Enhance the Touch Experience


using the API
Because of the operating system limitations a touch is
normally just used as a mouse replacement.

As of now only Windows™ 7 does offer limited multi-


touch functionality. But this is not built into the ope-
rating system itself but handled by a Microsoft® API
called touchpack.

If you want to enhance your application with multitouch


functions, you can use the touchpack functions Micro-
soft is offering. But on other operating systems you can
use the UPDD API to achieve similar results.

The UPDD API offers the ability to “route” the touch


events to the application and not the operating system.
And because it is up to you as the application program-
mer to do something with these information you can
use up to 10 (SMT-C-T10) or 16 (SMT-C-O16) simulta-
neous touches to beef up your application.
