Introduction
Purpose of UAV addition to the GEM2 is an ability to record GEM data without using external / wired logger for data
generated by the GEM2 sensor while being carried by the UAV. This is addition to WinGEM2 PC version operational
manual and shows only system features required specifically for UAV operation. It includes modified WinGEM2_UAV
and exporting tool EMExport_UAV to position GEM2 data.
Operation
WinGEM controls running of GEM2 which delivers data for storage. Data can be redirected to built-in UAVGEM logger,
rather than sending it back to WinGEM2_UAV.
Operator starts GEM Transmiter, checks for quality of the data and, just before take-off, issues data-redirection
command LOG-UAV. Data will stop coming to the WinGEM2_UAV and Info status will appear.
Pic 1.
Logger Error Status
Info status will be updated every 5sec, and only when delivery of status data is available over BlueTooth link. BT Link
should be good for few meters, though if broken, it will re-connect when signal becomes strong again. In that case, we
will not know GEM status and WinGem may complain, but GEM and data storage is assumed to be OK. Once
reconnected, it will continue updating status.
When UAV is done and comes back to base, operator should press LOG-UAV command button again to stop
redirecting data to the UAV-logger. Pressing Transmit will stop transmitting.
Data files, created in mSD card, will be named "tmp_xxxx.cap" with ever increasing xxxx number. Size of the files is
determined by length of the GEM run with max preallocation of 2MB (few continuous hours of run) , truncated/renamed
to gem_xxxx.cap on stopping of redirection or 3sec incoming data inactivity.
Errors
Red LED will be continuously blinking based on rate of incoming data being stored. In the event of error, there is a
numbered sequence of blinks with the following error codes:
ERROR_FILEOPEN 2
ERROR_SDCARD 4
ERROR_MEMORY 6
If a ‘logger error’ or GEM is not transmitting/measuring, logger error status will be indicated and displayed by
WinGEM2_UAV in red.
GPS
Presence/error of GPS connection can be observed only on WinGEM in status line +GPS 2 where '+' indicates Pulse
Per Second and GPS 2 indicated type of real-time data correction, as shown in Pic 1. Consult GPS manual for more
details. It is expected to have GPS-NMEA message $GPGGA of 1Hz rate.
Data Exporting/Processing
Once survey is finished, move mSD card from logger to a PC for exporting/positioning the data. Use accompanying
application EMExport_UAV to merge logged EM-data with GPS-data producing *.csv file, ready for importing to a
processing/plotting software.
