motion picture, a series of images that are projected onto a
screen to create the illusion of motion
one of the most popular forms of entertainment, enabling
people to immerse themselves in an imaginary world for a short
period of time
combine entertainment with instruction, to make the learning
process more enjoyable
teaches people about history, science, human behavior, etc.
Types of Films
feature films most commonly shown in large movie theaters
typically last at least one and one-half hours and tell a
fictional story or a story based on real events but
portrayed by actors
animated films use images created by artists
create the illusion of movement from a series of two-
dimensional drawings, three-dimensional objects, or
computer-generated images
documentary films deals primarily with fact, not fiction
do not often appear in theaters, but they are seen
regularly on cable and broadcast television
experimental films a sequence of images, literal or abstract, which do not
necessarily form a narrative
can be animated, live action, computer generated, or
a combination of all three

industrial films made by companies that wish to publicize their


products or generate a favorable public image
educational films specifically intended to be shown in classrooms
aim: to instruct, on subjects from history to driving
skills
independent any character-driven film that is made outside the
(indie) films traditional Hollywood film system with a very small
budget and keeps the artist/filmmaker’s original
vision intact without corporate corruption, with an
emphasis on character development and a strong,
original and/or controversial storyline

action plot: moves quickly from one dramatic event to


another and which typically involves good characters
combating evil ones
central struggle plays out mainly through a clash of
physical forces
character development and love interest are of
secondary or no importance
adventure central struggle plays out mainly through encounters
with new “worlds”
comedy a funny movie that depicts amusing events
central struggle causes hilarious results
coming-of-age central struggle is about the hero finding his or her
drama place in the world

epic/myth central struggle plays out in the midst of a clash of
great forces or in the sweep of great historical change
