Arts and Crafts of Muslim Mindanao
LET'S MOVE AHEAD
Mindanao is among the few regions in the Philippines that was not entirely subjected
under the influence of Christianity during the Spanish colonial period. As such, the
region was able to retain and to preserve the teachings and traditions of Islamic faith
which was the most dominant religion during the time.
Muslim Mindanao is the term given to the region within Mindanao that is highly
populated by Muslim communities. This region is composed of five predominantly
Muslim provinces such as Basilan, Lanao province, Maguindanao, Sulu, and Tawi- Tawi.
Within these provinces reside different Islamic cultural groups namely the Maranao
from Lanao, the Maguindanaon from Maguindanao, the Badjao, Tausug, and Jama
Mapun from Sulu, and the Iranun from Sulu and Tawi-tawi.
The presence of different ethnic communities in Mindanao contribute to the diversity of
the arts and crafts in the region. Most importantly, each of the arts and - from this
region reflect and represent the rich cultural heritage that Mindanao has to offer to the
world.
Textile Weaving
The different ethnic groups from Muslim Mindanao display a variety of beautifully hand-
woven cloth, each with a distinct character and style. An example of this is the malong.

The malong is a traditional piece of cloth in a form ofa dress. It is usually woven by hand
and embedded with diferent kinds of okir patterns and designs.
Among the ethnic groups from the region of Muslim Mindanao, it is the Maranao and
the Maguindanaon who actively produce hand-woven malongs using an ancient
weaving device known as the backstrap loom. Some hand-woven malongs have
patterns and designs which may represent the ethnic origin as well as the social and
economic status, of the wearer. An example of this is the malong landap by the people
of Maranao. The malong landap is commonly used during important ceremonies. The
colors yellow and purple are commonly found in special malongs used by members of
the royalty.
On the other hand, Yakan weaving is another kind of textile weaving which originated
from the Island of Lamitan, Basilan. The industry of weaving in the region has provided
sustainable jobs for most of the Yakan women. The signature mark of the Yakan hand-
loomed fabrics lies in their use of bright colors and bold geometric patterns.
The Yakan people make use of their traditional fabric in a number of ways. For instance,
as a head cover or a turban known as seputangan. They also use the fabric to create
long-sleeved blouse called badju lapi decorated with various gold, silver and bronze
embellishments, as well as traditional tight-fitting trousers called sawal. The sawal
trousers are characterized by their vivid colors and their vertical stripes design. The
trousers are usually paired with a skirt called pinalantupan. The pinalantupan skirt is
also made from the same fabric as the sawal trousers.

Because of the increasing popularity of the Yakan fabric to both local and tourists alike,
more and more native items such as coin purse, hand bags, and table cloths are made
using the fabric.
Accessory Making
Some of the most attractive accessories from the region of Muslim Mindanao hail from
the ethnic community of people known as the Badjaos. The Badjaos reside in the
archipelago of Sulu and are commonly known as the Sea Gypsies of the South primarily
because of the fact that they live most of their lives along the coastal regions of
Mindanao.
One of the most well-known accesories from the Badjao people is the sablay, which is a
beautifully embellished long sIeeved blouse, usually of knee-length. Other accessories of
the Badjao people consist of locally crafted earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and anklets.
Personal ornaments are a huge part of the culture of the Badjao people. It is through
their native accessories that they are able to assert their unique identity and
individuality. These native accessories not only serve the purpose of adorning both men
and women of the Badjao community, but even more so, they reflect the rich culture
and history of the people.

Metal Crafting
The people from the province of Cotabato are known to be skillful brass casters, with
the low beautifully hand-engraved garul as their specialty. The brassware from this
region bear a striking resemblance to the brassware of the people of Maranao as well as
the people of Tausug.
The Tausug people from the island of Sulu specialized in different kinds of weaponry
more commonly known as Sulu blades. In the region of Muslim Mindanao, these bladed
weapons are collectively known as padang or parang. The excellent weaponry of the
Tausug people played a very important factor for the tribes success in resisting foreign
invasion during the Spanish colonial rule.
The three major swords from the collection of Sulu blades are the barong, the
kampilan, and the kris. The barong is a small single-edged leaf-shaped blade sword that
is commonly used as a chopping weapon. On the other hand, the kampilan is a single
edged blade sword that is commonly used for battle. Lastly, the kris is a double-edged
blade sword which serves as an excellent tool for chopping and slicing, and is the most
favorite weapon of choice among the people of Muslim Mindanao.
